Resizing and Cropping Your Canvas
Learn how to resize and crop your document after you've created it.
When to use
Resizing and Cropping can be very useful anytime you need to change the size of your document.
Instructions
- Start with your 9" x 11.5" document.
- Go to the Image Menu and choose 'Canvas Size' from the dropdown menu.
- Change the units of measurement from 'Pixels' into 'Inches' and then enter a value of 11.5" for the width before pressing 'OK' to apply the changes.
- You have now changed the size of your canvas into a square.
- Return to the Image Menu and choose 'Canvas Size' once again.
- This time, move the 'Anchor' from the center of the grid to either the middle left or middle right.
- Enter a value of 16" for the width and then click 'OK' to apply the changes.
- You should now see that the extra space has only been added to one side.
- If you select the Crop Tool (C) you can click and drag the handles around to freely crop your image anywhere you like.
- Notice that as you drag the handles around you will see the size being updated in real time, represented in pixels.
- If you don't see the handles around the edges of your document, you may need to change your Screen Mode. You can do this by pressing the 'F' key on the keyboard.
- Instead of freely cropping our image with the handles, let's use the same menu as before.
- Return to the Image Menu and choose 'Canvas Size' and revert the document back into an 11.5" x 11.5" square.
- Photoshop will ask if you are sure that you want to resize the canvas if it's smaller than what you have currently, and here we can simply click 'Proceed' to apply the changes.
- You should now have an 11.5" x 11.5" square for your document.
Hints & tips
- Press the 'C' key to grab your Crop Tool.
- Press the 'F' key to change your Screen Mode.
- Press and hold the Spacebar to switch to the Hand Tool and navigate freely around your document.
