Quick reference
Using the Freeform Pen Tool
Learn how to work with the Freeform Pen Tool in Photoshop.
When to use
This is a good option when you are looking to create a path with a drawing tablet.
Instructions
Getting Started with the Freeform Pen Tool
- Begin by opening one of the two mug photos from the resources folder.
- Press Shift+P on the keyboard to scroll through the nested tools under the Pen Tool until you have the Freeform Pen Tool selected.
- Alternatively, you can click and hold on the Pen Tool in the toolbar and then choose the Freeform Pen Tool.
- Select a starting point and begin tracing around the outside of the mug.
- As you continue tracing around the mug, notice that the points are being generated as you go.
- Continue making your way around the outside of the mug until you've gone all the way around and closed the shape.
Refining the Path
- Select the Delete Anchor Point Tool and begin removing every other point, or every few points as needed.
- Once you've removed any extraneous or unnecessary points, you can switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A) to begin repositioning and refining the points and handles.
- Continue this process to simplify the path, and once you've traced the outside of the mug, begin tracing the inside of the handle as well.
Hints & tips
- The Freeform Pen Tool is only as accurate as the user is able to be when using a mouse or a stylus.
- When using the Freeform Pen Tool it can be helpful to work in sections by tracing, removing extra points, using the Direct Selection Tool (A) to reposition your points, and then continuing to trace with the Freeform Pen Tool.
