About this lesson
Improve your body language confidence by practicing for meetings, presentations or interviews on video.
-
00:05
As we continue with the course,
-
00:07
you're going to get highly specific advice on how to pair your body language for
-
00:12
face to face meetings, speeches, presentations and media interviews.
-
00:16
But before we get to the specifics,
-
00:18
I want to give you one overriding solution to almost all of your problems.
-
00:24
Here it is.
-
00:25
For any type of business situation you're in.
-
00:28
I want you to practice what it is you're doing.
-
00:31
From standing around at a networking event,
-
00:35
chatting with people informally to having a one on one sit down presentation
-
00:40
to a standing up presentation to a media interview.
-
00:44
I want you to actually practice on video.
-
00:46
And you can just hold your cell phone up, like that.
-
00:50
Or you can use a webcam.
-
00:51
Or you can use an iPhone, or an iPad.
-
00:54
Doesn't matter the quality of the video.
-
00:57
What matters is that you can see yourself and hear yourself.
-
01:01
You've got to practice it on video and look at it.
-
01:05
Now, that's not gonna help you in and of itself.
-
01:09
You have to go to the next step.
-
01:10
Very few people are willing to do the next step.
-
01:13
But it is the single biggest factor in helping you go over the top.
-
01:19
And get to that point, where you are 100% comfortable and
-
01:24
confident with your body language in every situation, and here's the next step.
-
01:29
You'll have to practice on video, watch it, figure out what you like and
-
01:32
don't like, but then you have to do it again.
-
01:36
Record it again, watch it, figure out what you like about your body language,
-
01:41
what you not like and do it again.
-
01:46
So, stack of things you like about your body language should be getting taller and
-
01:50
taller and taller.
-
01:51
The stack of things you don't like should be getting smaller and
-
01:54
smaller and smaller.
-
01:56
You've got to keep doing this until you like how you're coming across.
-
02:03
At that moment, doesn't mean everyone else in the whole world will love you,
-
02:07
but it does mean you won't be nervous anymore.
-
02:11
You won't be wondering, well, what do I do with my hands?
-
02:14
Is my tongue coming out every two, you don't have to wonder about that.
-
02:20
You will have evidence, your own video.
-
02:23
You will know how you're coming across.
-
02:26
As I mentioned in earlier lectures, the biggest problem most people have with
-
02:30
their body language is because they're nervous, because they're uncomfortable.
-
02:35
They start doing self-conscious things.
-
02:38
Looking around, staring around, freezing themselves, holding their hands awkwardly.
-
02:42
All of these things happen
-
02:46
because you're not comfortable and you're not certain with how you're coming across.
-
02:51
If you know you're coming across, the absolute best you can.
-
02:56
And the way you want to it becomes virtually impossible to be nervous and
-
03:01
that solves not every single problem.
-
03:05
But it solves a lot of problems.
-
03:07
There can always be small, subtle variations of body language,
-
03:13
expectations, from one culture to another.
-
03:16
You could have bad breath and everything else is fine but
-
03:18
the person smells your breath.
-
03:20
I can't cover that in this particular course though,
-
03:24
my point is there's nothing 100% fool proof.
-
03:26
But if you follow this one technique
-
03:31
in my experience you will have eliminated about 98% of
-
03:35
the potential problems you have with your body language in a business situation.
-
03:40
So, you take away nothing else from this course, please take this away.
-
03:45
Rehearse whatever it is you're going to be doing in this business situation.
-
03:50
Standing and networking at a cocktail party, talking one on one,
-
03:54
small presentation, presentation to a large group or a medium group.
-
03:58
Rehearse repeatedly, on video.
-
04:01
And watch it until you love every single aspect of how you looked and sound.
