CAPM® Application
The CAPM® application process is straight-forward. However, it is important to understand what is required so that you do not have to resubmit.
When to use
When you have completed the training courses or have met the experience requirements, you can prepare and submit the CAPM® application. If the application is approved, you will be eligible to sign up for the test immediately. Your eligibility letter is good for one year and you have up to three tries to pass the exam.
Instructions
Complete the application online at the www.pmi.org website. As you complete the application, collect your documentation for each of the items of education that you claim. A portion of all applications are audited and documentation demonstrating your qualifications must be provided. Typical documentation includes:
- Education of high school degree (or higher) – a copy of the transcript showing graduation to show your education level.
- Education of 23 contact hours of project management training - a certificate of completion of the training, or other record of attendance.
You do not need to turn all of the documentation into PMI at the time of application, just the completed application form. Once your application has been reviewed for completeness, you must pay the application fee. This process takes about 24 hours. The amount of the fee varies depending upon several factors and global exchange rates. So check with PMI to determine what your fee will be.
At that time your application may be selected for audit. If selected, you will have 90 days to provide the documentation that verifies your claims. After PMI receives your documentation, they require five to seven days to review the documentation and check on some of your sources and references. Once everything is approved, you will receive an eligibility letter that allows you to schedule the exam.
Hints & tips
- Submit the application after you have completed most of your study and are ready to take the test. Then as soon as you are approved, you can schedule the test. That way you will have the maximum amount of time in case you need to take a retest.
- When completing the application, create a document file or folder that has all the backup information from your application. Then if selected for audit, you can quickly provide the correct information.
- 00:03 Hi, I'm Ray Sheen.
- 00:05 I'd like to explain to you the application process for
- 00:09 the Certified Associate in Project Management Certification.
- 00:13 Let's start with the flow chart of the process.
- 00:16 I'll show you what you need to do and
- 00:18 what PMI will be doing in the application process.
- 00:21 In this chart, I have color coded which activities are done by you and
- 00:25 which are done by PMI.
- 00:26 First, complete the application, this is done online at the PMI website.
- 00:31 Once you start, you have up to 90 days to complete that application.
- 00:36 Then PMI reviews the application for completeness and
- 00:39 that normally takes about 24 hours.
- 00:42 Either your application goes on for approval or you are selected for an audit.
- 00:46 The audit selection process is random.
- 00:49 A portion of the applications are selected for an audit.
- 00:52 When that occurs you are required to produce the documentation that proves all
- 00:56 the information that you listed in your application.
- 00:59 You'll have 90 days to gather and submit that documentation.
- 01:03 I'll describe the kind of documentation required in the next few slides.
- 01:07 At that point, PMI will review the documentation and
- 01:10 that requires another five to seven days.
- 01:13 Assuming you pass the audit or you were not selected for
- 01:16 an audit, you pay the fees that are based upon your status of PMI membership.
- 01:21 Next, you will receive the exam eligibility letter.
- 01:24 That letter will allow you to schedule an exam at a testing centre
- 01:29 anytime during the next year.
- 01:31 Let's talk more about how to complete that application,
- 01:35 this is done on-line at the PMI website.
- 01:38 The application does not need to be completed at just one sitting.
- 01:42 You can fill out some items and then go do some other work or track down a reference
- 01:47 for some of the documentation that's required and then fill that in later.
- 01:51 If your application is audited, you will need to provide documentation and
- 01:55 references for everything in the application.
- 01:58 Let's look at what would be required.
- 02:00 For your formal education of a secondary school,
- 02:03 you will need a diploma or transcript showing you completed school.
- 02:07 For the 23 contact hours of project management training,
- 02:10 you will need a certificate of attendance.
- 02:12 Or some other form of verification that show that you actually went to the class.
- 02:18 Let's look at the project management education that is applicable for
- 02:22 this application.
- 02:23 To include a course,
- 02:24 the course must be teaching topics that are part of the CAPM learning objectives.
- 02:29 These are essentially the knowledge areas of the project management body of
- 02:33 knowledge the PMBOK guide.
- 02:34 Which is discussed in another lesson in this course, you need 23 contact hours.
- 02:40 The contact hour means that it's an hour where you are in the class and
- 02:44 there's a teacher leading or directing the work or activity.
- 02:47 If you're using a university program for your education, then you can only use
- 02:52 classroom hours, not homework hours, when counting contact hours.
- 02:56 And you can only count the hours of the class that discuss project
- 03:00 management topics, not other topics.
- 03:03 There are many different sources for
- 03:05 project management courses that could count, including this one.
- 03:08 The types of courses are PMI education programs from registered education
- 03:12 providers.
- 03:13 PMI chapter education, such as seminars, but not normal chapter meetings.
- 03:18 University programs, employer training or
- 03:21 sponsored events focused on project management.
- 03:24 Training or consulting companies offering courses or
- 03:27 online project management courses.
- 03:30 Don't be lackadaisical about your application.
- 03:33 The process may take a little time, but assume you will be audited.
- 03:37 And if you're audited, everything that you stated on the application will be
- 03:41 verified and you must demonstrate that it is true.
