Hints & tips
- Use the study guide to direct your studying for the exam.
- 00:04 Hi, this is Ray Sheen.
- 00:06 I'd like to take a few minutes to introduce you to a very helpful handbook
- 00:10 available from the PMI, titled the CAPM Exam Content Outline.
- 00:15 So what does exam content outline mean?
- 00:18 Well, the CAPM Exam Content Outline identifies the focus of the exam
- 00:22 questions.
- 00:23 You can think of it as a study guide to prepare for the exam.
- 00:27 The handbook can be downloaded for free from the PMI website and
- 00:30 I strongly recommend that you get one.
- 00:33 The CAPM Exam is a knowledge exam, not an experience exam.
- 00:37 So what counts is knowing what is found in the Project Management Body of Knowledge,
- 00:41 the PMBOK Guide.
- 00:42 If you don't have a copy of the PMBOK Guide, you can purchase one at PMI.
- 00:46 And if you're a PMI member, you can download a copy for free.
- 00:50 The knowledge of specific project management tools and
- 00:52 techniques should be considered a prerequisite for this course.
- 00:56 We will focus on definitions and structure of the PMBOK Guide.
- 01:00 But we don't have time in this course to teach all the tools.
- 01:04 If you need to learn the primary project management tools,
- 01:07 you should take an additional course that is focused on teaching those tools.
- 01:11 Let me encourage you to consider the GoSkills
- 01:14 project management course that addresses the tools associated with CAPM.
- 01:18 Let's do a high level review of the learning objectives that are found
- 01:21 in the CAPM Exam Content Outline.
- 01:24 The learning objectives are organized into 13 sections that
- 01:27 directly correlate with the 13 chapters of the PMBOK Guide.
- 01:31 Each of the 13 objectives are subdivided into several knowledge elements.
- 01:35 Other lessons in this course will specifically address
- 01:38 the PMBOK Guide knowledge areas, and the details for all of the processes.
- 01:43 Let's start with the first three learning objectives.
- 01:45 The first is for the chapter entitled Intro to Project Management.
- 01:49 In this objective, you'll need to know the five process groups initiating,
- 01:53 planning, executing, monitoring and controlling and closing.
- 01:56 In addition, know which processes are associated with the groups and
- 02:00 the project lifecycle.
- 02:01 Also, understand the relationship between project, program, portfolio, and
- 02:05 operations.
- 02:06 And understand tailoring of a project for unique project features.
- 02:10 This will be a common theme in many of the learning objectives.
- 02:13 The second learning objective relates to the project environment.
- 02:17 This is a further discussion about hierarchy of project, program, and
- 02:20 portfolio.
- 02:21 In addition, the project management office is explained and its activities described.
- 02:26 There's also a discussion about organizational systems
- 02:29 along with organizational process assets and environmental factors,
- 02:33 which will be inputs and outputs on many of the project management processes.
- 02:37 The third learning objective is based upon the role of the project manager.
- 02:41 This includes the functions and sphere of influence.
- 02:44 Also, the differences and similarities between leadership and management
- 02:48 are addressed, and the PMI project manager development triangle is explained.
- 02:53 Now we'll look at the learning objectives four through six.
- 02:56 Objective four is based upon the PMBOK chapter for
- 02:59 project integration management.
- 03:01 This will cover the seven processes and the inputs, outputs, and their tools and
- 03:05 techniques for each process.
- 03:07 And of course, methods for integration must be understood.
- 03:10 Some specific areas addressed will be the role of project management in integration
- 03:15 along with topics of change management and tailoring the integration approach.
- 03:19 An emphasis on this aspect of tailoring will be the project documentation.
- 03:24 The fifth objective is project scope management.
- 03:27 This area has six project management processes with their associated inputs,
- 03:31 outputs, tools and techniques.
- 03:33 The major tool discussed is the work breakdown structure.
- 03:36 And like with other objectives, tailoring of scope is discussed, and
- 03:40 in particular, the tailoring for adaptive and agile projects including a prototype.
- 03:45 The sixth learning objective is based upon project schedule management.
- 03:49 Of course, the six processes and their inputs, outputs tools and
- 03:52 techniques must be known and understood.
- 03:55 This objective also includes network diagram scheduling and
- 03:58 simple schedule calculations.
- 04:00 Finally, as with the other learning objectives,
- 04:03 you need to understand the tailoring for agile and adaptive projects.
- 04:08 Onto learning objectives seven through nine.
- 04:10 The seventh objective is for project cost management.
- 04:12 There are four project management processes in this chapter
- 04:15 with their inputs, outputs, tools and techniques.
- 04:18 Basic forecasting and earned value management are included and
- 04:21 of course, there is the tailoring for agile and adaptive projects.
- 04:24 The eighth learning objective is project quality management.
- 04:28 There are three project management processes with their input, outputs,
- 04:30 tools and techniques.
- 04:32 In this learning objective, the topic of continuous improvement and
- 04:35 adapting quality tools for different project environments are included.
- 04:40 The ninth learning objective is for project resource management.
- 04:44 This chapter has six project management processes with their associated inputs,
- 04:47 outputs, tools and techniques.
- 04:49 One aspect of this objective is team management,
- 04:52 including conflict management and resource related problems.
- 04:56 It also includes data representation for resource management.
- 04:59 And of course, there is the tailoring for adaptive and agile projects.
- 05:03 And finally, let's look at learning objectives 10 through 13.
- 05:07 Number ten is project communication management.
- 05:10 This includes three project management processes with inputs, outputs, tools, and
- 05:13 techniques.
- 05:14 This objective will include communication skills and methods, and
- 05:18 the elements of a communication plan.
- 05:20 And of course, there's tailoring for communicating on adaptive and
- 05:23 agile projects.
- 05:25 Learning objective 11 is for project risk management.
- 05:28 There are seven project management processes, each of which has inputs,
- 05:32 outputs, tools and techniques.
- 05:34 This objective includes risk documentation, risk calculations, and
- 05:38 adjusting the risk approach based upon the project environment.
- 05:42 Learning objective 12 is for project procurement management.
- 05:45 There are three project management processes that have inputs,
- 05:48 outputs, tools and techniques.
- 05:50 This objective will address different contracting approaches and
- 05:53 will discuss tailoring of procurement based upon the project environment.
- 05:57 The final learning objective addresses project stakeholder management.
- 06:01 There are four project management processes, each with inputs, outputs,
- 06:04 tools and techniques.
- 06:05 This objective recognizes the role of stakeholders and the concepts and
- 06:09 benefits that are based upon stakeholder management.
- 06:12 Well, these learning objectives are a very good high level study
- 06:17 guide that you should use to prepare for the CAPM exam.
