Quick reference
Create a Free Outlook Account
We can create a free Outlook account whenever we want to practice our Micorosft 365 skills without affecting our live personal or business account. Note, not all Microsoft 365 features are available with a free account.
Instructions
Create a free Outlook Email Account
- Open bing and search for 'set up an outlook email account'
- Type the email address that you want to use
- Choose outlook.com or hotmail.com from the drop-down
- Click Next
- Create a Password
- Click Next
- Enter your first name and last name
- Click Next
- Enter your country and date of birth
- Click Next
- Complete any verification procedures
- Click Submit
- 00:04 In order to work through this course,
- 00:06 you're going to need to have access to a Microsoft 365 account.
- 00:09 Now it might be that you have access to an account through work, or
- 00:14 you might wish to create your own outlook.com email account and
- 00:19 access Microsoft 365 services through that.
- 00:23 Now the other method that you could use is you could set up what we
- 00:27 call an E5 trial sandbox account, which you can use to practice your
- 00:32 Microsoft 365 skills without affecting your actual live account.
- 00:37 I'm going to talk more about that in the next lesson.
- 00:40 But in this lesson, I just want to walk you through the process of
- 00:44 creating a free outlook.com email account and
- 00:46 showing you what you have access to in terms of Microsoft 365 applications.
- 00:51 Now, I think by this stage in the game that most of
- 00:54 us are very well aware of how to create a new email account.
- 00:57 But if you're not, let's just quickly walk through the process.
- 01:01 So you can see I've opened up Bing.
- 01:02 I've just typed in set up an Outlook email account.
- 01:06 Let's hit Enter.
- 01:07 And we're going to go to this link just here, Microsoft account.
- 01:11 So now I'm being prompted to enter in the name of the account that I want to use.
- 01:16 So I'm just going to use trainer365@outlook.com.
- 01:21 Notice you can click the dropdown and you could choose to use hotmail.com instead.
- 01:26 We are going to stick with outlook.com and click on Next.
- 01:30 Now, you might find, as I've done here,
- 01:33 that the email address that you want to use has already been taken.
- 01:36 Now there's no getting around this, we just need to select something else.
- 01:41 So let me just add Deb on the end to see if that works, and it does.
- 01:48 So this is my new email address trainer365Deb@outlook.com.
- 01:53 I can then set a password, and then click on Next.
- 01:57 I then need to add a little bit more information to create my account.
- 02:01 So I'm going to add my name in, let's click on Next.
- 02:03 And then we need to add some more information.
- 02:06 And just for the record, that is not my actual birth date.
- 02:09 Let's click on Next.
- 02:11 We now have a little puzzle to solve just so
- 02:13 Microsoft can check to make sure that we're not some kind of robot.
- 02:17 And let's submit.
- 02:18 And if you've got it right, your verification will complete.
- 02:22 So Microsoft is going away and creating my brand new Outlook account.
- 02:27 And there we go, in a couple of minutes, we've set ourselves up on Microsoft 365.
- 02:32 Remember this is a free account, but we can still click on the app launcher in
- 02:36 the corner to see the applications that we have access to.
- 02:39 Now again,
- 02:40 note you're not going to see any of those business enterprise applications.
- 02:45 So you won't see things in here like SharePoint, for example.
- 02:49 We do have Teams in the list, but again,
- 02:52 we have access to a very basic version of Teams.
- 02:55 But mostly they should be good enough for
- 02:57 you to be able to work through this course.
- 03:00 So if you don't want to set yourself up a sandbox account which you're going to
- 03:04 cover in the next lesson, then this would be your alternative option.
