About this lesson
Content creation is a primary function of chatbots, but you don't have to draft perfect prompts every time. After this lesson, you'll be able to write prompts step-by-step that will help you reach your output goals.

Key Points
What is Prompt Chaining?
Prompt chaining is a method of breaking down complex tasks into smaller, manageable steps to improve the precision and quality of AI-generated outputs. It’s akin to progressing towards a goal one step at a time, ensuring clarity and focus at each stage.
Three Steps to Effective Prompt Chaining
Step 1: Establish the Main Goal
Begin with a high-level prompt to outline the overall goal.
- Example: “Generate an outline for a business proposal for a software company proposing a tailored solution to new clients.”
This creates a foundational structure or framework.
Step 2: Focus on the Details
Break the task into smaller components and build out each part.
- Example: “Using the following information about a software company and future client, write a detailed introduction and overview that clearly states the objectives and benefits of developing a client relationship.”
Provide relevant information and iterate for each section (e.g., introduction, objectives, benefits). Ask AI to consider prior outputs to maintain consistency.
Step 3: Finalize the Output
Combine all sections into a cohesive final document.
- Example: “Combine each of the sections into a cohesive and persuasive business proposal. Ensure smooth transitions, a consistent tone, and engaging language throughout.”
The AI can refine the language to be more compelling and emphasize key benefits.
Benefits of Prompt Chaining
- Makes complex tasks manageable by addressing them in smaller parts.
- Produces more precise and tailored outputs.
- Improves efficiency by delegating writing and organization to AI.
Practical Application
Use prompt chaining for tasks like reports, presentations, or multi-part documents. This systematic approach streamlines your workflow, allowing you to focus on higher-level decision-making.
