Setting Up Microsoft SQL Server

• 00:05 In this video, we're going to download and install Microsoft SQL Server
• 00:10 2016 as well as SSMS which is the SQL Server Management Studio.
• 00:14 That's the thing that we use to sort an interface with the SQL Server itself.
• 00:19 These download links are always changing so.
• 00:21 The best thing is just to come to Google and
• 00:23 type in SQL server 2016, something like that.
• 00:29 And you're gonna get links right away, we've got an ad up here for Microsoft.
• 00:32 We can look through here and
• 00:34 the first one listed after all the ads is probably the one you're gonna want.
• 00:38 It's the SQL Server 2016 Microsoft, go ahead and click that.
• 00:41 And there's an overview video you can watch if you want to.
• 00:43 I should say, this is the Microsoft website, the official Microsoft website.
• 00:47 You're definitely gonna wanna download this from Microsoft.
• 00:50 So you have lots of different options.
• 00:52 I'm just gonna click the Get started button here.
• 00:54 And there's a free evaluation, you can get the developer edition.
• 00:58 You have to jump thru some hoops for that.
• 00:59 The Express edition.
• 01:01 All kinds of different things.
• 01:02 For this course, where just gonna use the free trial evaluation.
• 01:05 You can go ahead and down load this too.
• 01:06 You can use totally free 180 day free trial.
• 01:09 Get you all the stuff you need.
• 01:10 Go ahead and click download.
• 01:11 It's gonna ask you for some stuff.
• 01:13 I'm not really sure that they really test you on this.
• 01:15 You go ahead and type your name and stuff if you want.
• 01:18 They don't send you a confirmation email or anything that you have to click a link.
• 01:21 So I don't even think you have to actually type in your email address.
• 01:24 But go ahead if you want to.
• 01:25 Work phone.
• 01:27 Select Country.
• 01:29 We're in the United States.
• 01:31 Company name.
• 01:32 Not applicable.
• 01:33 Click the download and it should fire right up.
• 01:36 So go ahead and save it to, I'm saving to my desktop.
• 01:38 You can save it to anything you want.
• 01:40 It's a fairly small file, it downloads right away.
• 01:43 And it's just like a package manager that will then download
• 01:47 other files once you click it.
• 01:48 So, I see it right here.
• 01:50 I'm just gonna click it or
• 01:50 you can go to your desktop and see a little icon that you've downloaded and
• 01:54 you can double click that and I'm just gonna click it here and it opens.
• 01:58 And so we get this screen and this actually takes a little while to install
• 02:03 so I'm gonna pause things throughout from time to time as it just goes through these
• 02:08 bar things and makes its way.
• 02:10 But it's just checking your system to make sure you have the right giga whozits
• 02:14 on your computer, in order to be able to run this thing.
• 02:16 One thing to note 2016, I believe you need at least Microsoft Windows Version 8 or
• 02:22 above in order to run that.
• 02:24 If you don't have that.
• 02:25 If you're still on Windows 7, which a lot of people are, you just can't use this.
• 02:28 If that's the case, I would download an earlier version.
• 02:31 Try and download 2014 or even 2012 or even 2008.
• 02:35 It's all pretty much the same, slightly different bells and whistles but
• 02:38 it's all you know it's a database.
• 02:40 So you'll be able to follow along.
• 02:42 For the most part, with an earlier version if you need to.
• 02:45 So you have different options here, Basic, Custom, and Download Media.
• 02:48 We just want Basic, click that.
• 02:50 And then we have a license, accept.
• 02:52 Say, we're to install it.
• 02:54 And for the most part, you're gonna want to go with the defaults on everything.
• 02:58 Unless you really know what you're doing,
• 03:00 you don't need to customize this in any way.
• 03:02 So just, for the most part, you're gonna be clicking next throughout this thing.
• 03:05 So it's downloaded some stuff.
• 03:07 Now, it's running some different rules.
• 03:09 So now, it's started to install.
• 03:11 And like I said, this takes quite a long time to install,
• 03:15 so expect to spend maybe even like an hour depending how fast your computer is,
• 03:19 how fast your Internet connection is.
• 03:21 It can take a while, so like I said,
• 03:23 I'll be pausing throughout this thing as it goes.
• 03:26 Now, I've installed this on my computer in the past.
• 03:29 So maybe some of that dependency files I might already have, so might be speed it
• 03:33 up a little bit, just sort of defense on what sort of a system that you're running.
• 03:37 And I should say Azure installing this, other screens will pop up little
• 03:41 dust prompts and it will do a thing and then it'll little disappear.
• 03:44 Perfectly normal, just sort it, don't pay attention to those as they happen.
• 03:47 It's suppose to happen that way so no big deal, okay.
• 03:50 So we've finished installing the server itself, Microsoft SQL Server 2016.
• 03:54 Now, in the next video, we will install SSMS which is the second part that you
• 03:59 need in order to use that and we will look at that in the next video.
