Connecting to a Server

Quick reference

• 00:05 Okay, now it's time to fire this thing up and connect to a server and
• 00:09 see what we can see here.
• 00:10 So I'm just gonna go down to my Windows start menu and I'm on Windows 10 here so
• 00:14 you have all this stuff here and you could see recently added.
• 00:17 We have Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, that's SSMS.
• 00:22 So you can click that, or you just come down to the search, type SSMS, same thing,
• 00:26 Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
• 00:29 And so click that, and it should open.
• 00:31 So we get this little start screen here.
• 00:35 And since it’s the first time, it’s scanning and updating all kinds of things
• 00:39 that’s totally normal, sort of expect that to happen.
• 00:43 So kick back and wait and let it do its thing.
• 00:46 So we see this login screen and the server name is listed as flatplan pc.
• 00:50 This is just the name of my computer.
• 00:52 This is my login name when I log into Windows.
• 00:54 Whatever your login name is, that's what you'll see there.
• 00:57 For authentication, because we need to login,
• 00:59 we're using basic Windows authentication and so you don't have to do anything but
• 01:03 hit Connect in order to connect.
• 01:04 Now when you installed SQL, if you did some custom thing,
• 01:08 you could've setup a username and a password.
• 01:10 We didn't do that, we just took the defaults, but you could have done that.
• 01:13 If so, just click on this little drop down.
• 01:16 Click SQL Server authentication.
• 01:18 And this thing pops up so you can type in your login and your password.
• 01:21 Whatever you designated at the time when you installed it.
• 01:24 Like I said, we didn't do any of that.
• 01:25 And you likely won't ever do that, so
• 01:27 you'll just go with the basic Windows authentication.
• 01:30 So that's the connection screen.
• 01:33 Now we just go ahead and click Connect to fire this thing up.
• 01:37 And then, boom, boom, boom, this thing on the left here pops up.
• 01:41 So this is the Object Explorer and
• 01:43 this is the main sort of menu toolbar that you're gonna be using in SSMS.
• 01:48 And you can see it's got our flatplan pc SQL server, it's got databases,
• 01:52 it's got security.
• 01:54 And you can just click through these boxes, and
• 01:57 we're gonna talk about some of these things in the next video.
• 01:59 And you can sort of just familiarize yourself and
• 02:02 get a sense of what's going on here.
• 02:04 So we have different databases.
• 02:06 And you treat these menus like you treat everything.
• 02:09 You can right-click on them to get additional things,
• 02:12 later on when we create a new database we'll right click on here and
• 02:15 click new database and its just that easy.
• 02:17 One of the really nice things about this SSMS system, its just point and click.
• 02:22 Super, super easy like all things Microsoft.
• 02:25 So, take a minute and just kinda look through these,
• 02:28 this is a lot of information thrown at you in this menu.
• 02:31 There's all kinds of stuff here, and
• 02:33 you really don't need to know what most of this stuff is, you can kinda look through
• 02:37 here, look at these different things if you're interested.
• 02:40 But most of the stuff we're gonna be dealing with is right up here in this
• 02:43 database section.
• 02:44 But take a minute to click through things, see what's what,
• 02:48 play around with this a little bit.
• 02:50 We haven't really done much anything, so
• 02:51 you can't really break much of anything at this point.
• 02:54 So just get a feel of this, and this is it.
• 02:57 We're set up.
• 02:58 We have our database running.
• 03:00 We have our SQL server up and running.
• 03:01 Everything is installed.
• 03:03 We now have all the tools we need to do cool database stuff.
• 03:06 And in the next video we're gonna go through here and
• 03:09 look at some of these things, specifically we'll look at the system databases
• 03:13 folder and each of these four things.
• 03:15 I'll talk a little bit about what those things are in the next video.
