Topic
Learn how to use your Apple Watch to present a Keynote presentation from your Apple iPhone.
When to use
The Apple Watch is a great tool and can be used for many things, including controlling a Keynote slideshow being presented on your Apple iPhone.
Instructions
We live in a very mobile world. With Keynote and Apple’s cloud service called “iCloud”, we can create and present our presentation from anywhere.
The easiest way to present a slideshow may just be from an iPhone using your Apple Watch to control the slides.
Note: currently, we can only control the iPhone to which our Apple Watch is paired for giving presentations.
To use our Apple Watch to control a slideshow:
- open the Keynote file on our iPhone
- launch the Apple Keynote remote app on our Apple Watch
- tap the green “Play” button on our Apple Watch
To go back a slide, we Force Touch on our Apple Watch to give us more options (including ending our slideshow).
Connecting our iPhone to a projector or large display is easy. Simply use the Lightening-to-HDMI/VGA adapter to connect our iPhone to the display.
To ensure we don’t lose connectivity to our iPhone from our Apple Watch, be sure not to exceed the 100 meter (330 feet) distance between the two devices.
Two advantages for using an iPhone+Apple Watch over a traditional setup:
- weight
- battery
- 00:04 Giving a presentation from your laptop is so 2015.
- 00:08 Okay, that maybe going a little far, but the reality is,
- 00:12 we live in a very mobile world.
- 00:15 With Keynote, and Apple's online cloud service called iCloud,
- 00:18 which we cover in greater detail in another lesson,
- 00:21 we can create a presentation on our MacBook, MacBook Pro, or iMac,
- 00:26 continue adding content to that presentation from our iPad, and then wrap
- 00:30 things up on Keynote for iCloud, which we can access by going to iCloud.com.
- 00:35 When it comes time to delivering that presentation,
- 00:37 we can choose any device to play that slide show on.
- 00:41 But in my experience, the most effective way may just be
- 00:44 using an iPhone in conjunction with an Apple Watch.
- 00:47 Let me explain how this works.
- 00:50 When we initially purchase an Apple Watch, we need to pair it with an iPhone.
- 00:54 This pairing process is what allows us to configure the watch settings,
- 00:58 install applications, and use services like activity to track our motion.
- 01:03 One of the default applications installed on the Apple Watch is a Keynote remote.
- 01:08 This app is a simple remote that allows us to start, advance, rewind, or
- 01:13 end a slide show when using Keynote on our iPhone.
- 01:16 To use our Apple Watch as a Keynote remote,
- 01:18 we first need to open the Keynote file stored on our iPhone.
- 01:22 Once the file is open,
- 01:23 we can now switch over to our Apple Watch where we can launch the Keynote app.
- 01:28 As you can see by this screenshot here, there really isn't a lot to the interface.
- 01:34 To start our presentation all we need to do is press the green play button.
- 01:38 When we do this, our keynote presentation will begin to play on our iPhone.
- 01:43 You'll also notice that our green play button has changed to a blue
- 01:46 advance button.
- 01:48 Tapping this will advance our keynote slide to the next slide or
- 01:51 build just as though we were advancing our slide deck on a traditional computer.
- 01:56 If we want to go back a slide or build, we simply force touch our Apple Watch screen
- 02:01 to reveal a slightly different interface that allows us to either go backward, or
- 02:06 end our slideshow prematurely.
- 02:08 If we choose to end the slideshow, our slide deck will close, and
- 02:12 the show will end.
- 02:13 If we choose to go back,
- 02:15 the interface will adjust again showing us both forward and backward buttons.
- 02:20 We can still choose to end our slideshow by force touching on our screen yet again.
- 02:24 This will reveal the exit slideshow option.
- 02:28 Currently these Keynote remote features are only available to control Keynote for
- 02:31 iPhone, and only the iPhone that we are paired to.
- 02:35 Apple may change that at some point so
- 02:37 that we can control a Keynote presentation on our iPad or even our Mac, but
- 02:41 this presentation actually helps to keep the process really simple for us.
- 02:45 There is zero configuration to get started.
- 02:48 The apple watch has all the information it needs to connect to your iPhone.
- 02:52 Now that we know how to present a Keynote presentation from
- 02:55 our iPhone using our Apple Watch to control the slides,
- 02:58 the question is how do we project our iPhone onto a large screen?
- 03:02 The answer is simple.
- 03:04 Your iPhone has a lightening port on the bottom.
- 03:06 This is where we connect our power cable to charge the device.
- 03:10 This is also where we can connect an adapter that will convert that lightning
- 03:13 port to HDMI, DVI, or even VGA for connecting to a projector or
- 03:18 large display.
- 03:20 One thing to keep in mind is that there is a distance limitation between your iPhone
- 03:24 and Apple Watch.
- 03:25 Depending on circumstances, this is somewhere around 100 meters, or 330 feet.
- 03:30 During the presentation, you want to make sure that you don't exceed that distance,
- 03:34 or you run the risk of losing connectivity to your iPhone.
- 03:38 With the popularity of Apple TV in the home and even in the workplace,
- 03:42 you can also use that to present your slide deck wirelessly.
- 03:45 All we have to do is airplay our iPhone screen to the Apple TV
- 03:49 connected to a large display, then open Keynote, and
- 03:52 use our Apple Watch to control our slide deck.
- 03:55 There are many reasons why you may want to consider this as a valid option for
- 03:58 presenting.
- 03:59 Battery life and the lack of need to carry around a bulky laptop everywhere you go
- 04:04 are two of those reasons.
- 04:05 What's great about this is that it's yet another option to choose from
- 04:09 when it comes time to presenting to a large audience.
- 04:12 This combination of iPhone and
- 04:14 Apple Watch easily replaces the need for a laptop and a handheld presentation remote.
- 04:19 If you have an iPhone and an Apple Watch, I recommend giving this a try right now.
- 04:24 If you don't, stop by your local Apple store to take one for
- 04:27 a test drive to see how easy it is to use this amazing feature.
