This lesson will walk through effective ways of working with fonts in Keynote.
When to use
Using the right font for a Keynote presentation can have a very positive effect over your audience. Using font tools built-in to Keynote can make this a little easier for you.
Instructions
To access the Fonts window, press Command+T.
From the Fonts window, we can browse fonts styles, sizes, etc. We can also use more advanced features.
From the gear icon, we can choose to add fonts to our favorites. This makes finding our favorite fonts much easier. Fonts added here can be recalled quickly from the “Favorites” list found below.
We can choose to view a preview of our font by choosing the “Show Preview” option.
Choosing the “Characters” option will give us a list of special characters and emoji to choose from.
The “Typography” option allows us to change more advanced features related to fonts like ligatures, number spacing and glyph variants.
We can add additional custom font sizes by clicking on the “Edit Sizes..” option. With the new size added, we can select that from the font size slider. on the right.
Addition buttons at the top of the Fonts window allow us to add underline, strikethroughs and more.
Login to download- 00:05 Using the right font for
- 00:06 a Keynote file can really make your slide stand out in a crowd.
- 00:09 Using the wrong font however can have a very detrimental effect on your audience.
- 00:14 With that in mind, I'm not sure that I can do a lot for
- 00:17 you by way of helping you to choose the right font over the wrong font.
- 00:20 But what I can do is show you a tool that will help you to see exactly what options
- 00:24 are available to you when customizing your fonts to using Keynote.
- 00:29 Pressing the command and
- 00:30 t buttons will open a new window where we can browse for and select a font to use.
- 00:36 There are a few things about this screen that you should know about because it can
- 00:39 make working with Keynote just a little bit easier.
- 00:42 The first thing we will want to pay attention to
- 00:45 is this small gear icon in the top left-hand corner.
- 00:48 Clicking this will reveal a few options that we will want to explore.
- 00:52 The first of which is the Add to Favorites option.
- 00:56 If we select a font that we like, and we know that we will use this particular font
- 01:00 over and over again, it's probably a good idea to choose this option here.
- 01:06 Choosing to add a font our favorites will add that font well, to our favorites.
- 01:11 Doing this will make it much faster and easier to reuse that font at a later time
- 01:15 since it's much easier to scroll through a list of ten or
- 01:18 fifteen fonts than it is hundreds or even thousands of fonts.
- 01:22 The next option is to show a preview of your selected font.
- 01:26 Choosing this option will create a preview in the top portion of the font
- 01:29 picker window.
- 01:30 You can change colors, sizes, and more and see a preview right here.
- 01:35 Choosing the Characters option will give us a list of special characters to choose
- 01:39 from including emoji.
- 01:41 We can scroll up and
- 01:42 down through this list to expose more character options to choose from.
- 01:48 The Typography option allows us to view specific options related to typography,
- 01:53 including ligatures, number spacing, and glyph variance.
- 01:58 You'll notice on the right side a slider that allows us to adjust the size of
- 02:01 our font.
- 02:03 This list is a predefined list but one that we can change if we wanted to.
- 02:07 For example, there's no option for a font size of 6,
- 02:10 so we can add our own either by manually entering the size here, or
- 02:14 we can go to Edit Sizes to add this to our list permanently.
- 02:19 This makes it easier to preview that specific size over and
- 02:22 over again by using the slider.
- 02:25 If we want to access additional tools for
- 02:27 managing our fonts, we can choose the Manage Fonts option.
- 02:31 This will open a new application called FontBook
- 02:34 where we can manage fonts in a little more detail including groups.
- 02:39 We won't go into details of FontBook here, but
- 02:41 you may want to explore that on your own.
- 02:44 If we want to add an underline to our text, we can do that here.
- 02:48 We can also add a double underline by choosing the Double option.
- 02:52 If we need that line to be a different color than the text color,
- 02:55 we can make that change here.
- 02:57 Let's set it to a red underline.
- 03:00 The next option is our Strikethrough option.
- 03:03 This is very similar to an underlying option only the line goes
- 03:06 through the middle of the text and not under it.
- 03:09 This button allows us to change the font color while this one allows us to set
- 03:13 a background color, which is very useful for highlighting text on a slide.
- 03:19 The last option we have in our font tool is to add a shadow to our text.
- 03:23 If we enable this feature, you'll notice that the three sliders to
- 03:26 the right of this feature are also enabled.
- 03:29 These allow us to control the parameters of our shadow.
- 03:32 With the first slider, we can adjust the shadow opacity.
- 03:36 With the second slider, we can control the shadow blur.
- 03:40 With the third slider, we can control the shadow offset.
- 03:44 The wheel to the right allows us to control the angle of the shadow.
- 03:47 Now that you know all about the font picker tool,
- 03:50 it's time to explore this on your own.
- 03:53 For many, this information will open a whole new world of working with fonts
- 03:57 that may be exactly what you need to give your slides just a little more pizzaz.
