Topic
This lesson will help you to understand what Master Slides are and how to use them.
When to use
Every built-in Keynote theme contains a collection of Master Slides that define how new slides added will look. In this lesson, we will learn how to create our own Master Slides.
Instructions
Any and all of the included themes can be modified to our liking.
To make a change to an existing Master Slide, we first need to view our Master Slides. We do this by going to View > Edit Master Slides.
The bold blue line at the bottom is a reminder that we are editing Master Slides.
When editing Master Slides, we can remove or add slides as needed. When modifying a built-in theme, the changes we make are non-destructive to that theme.
Objects added to a Master Slide will automatically be added to every slide that uses that Master Slide as its basis.
One limitation we have when working with Master Slides: we can’t include motion (builds). Outside of that, we can add any object type we want (even video).
Login to download- 00:04 When we add a new slide to our slide deck,
- 00:06 you will notice that there are several slide layouts for us to choose from.
- 00:11 These slide layouts are defined by the one who designed the theme,
- 00:14 Apple in this case.
- 00:15 Apple decided that there should be 12 layout styles to choose from,
- 00:18 and they should be designed in a specific way.
- 00:22 These are called master slides, and they are very handy because it takes some of
- 00:25 the busy work out of adding slides that will contain specific types of data.
- 00:30 For example, if we wanted to add a new slide that contained an image and
- 00:34 some bullet items, we can simply choose to add this slide layout here.
- 00:39 This is great, but what if we wanted to customize one of these master slides to
- 00:43 suit our specific needs?
- 00:44 No sweat.
- 00:46 Any and all of the included themes can be edited on a case by case basis.
- 00:51 In this example, I want to add a logo to the lower right hand corner of our slides.
- 00:56 To make a change to a master slide, we first need to reveal those master slides.
- 01:00 We do this by going to View and choosing Edit Master Slides.
- 01:05 The bold blue line at the bottom is a good visual reminder that
- 01:09 any changes we make here may affect our entire slide deck.
- 01:13 Before adding our logo let's first clean up a little bit.
- 01:16 For this presentation we don't need most of the slide layouts that
- 01:19 come with this theme.
- 01:21 Because we don't need them, we can simply remove them from the list like this.
- 01:26 One thing to keep in mind here is that the changes we make in this slide
- 01:30 deck are non-destructive to the generic theme itself.
- 01:33 In other words, if we wanted to create a new file using the same theme,
- 01:37 we will still have the master slides that we just removed.
- 01:41 Now that we're done,
- 01:42 let's take a look to see what implications this had on our slide deck.
- 01:45 When we add a new slide, we're now limited to only two options,
- 01:49 which is exactly what we expected when we made these changes.
- 01:53 Let's go back in and make some other changes to our master slides.
- 01:56 Namely, adding our logo to the bottom corner.
- 02:00 Adding an image is just as easy as you would expect.
- 02:03 We simply drag and drop it onto our canvas.
- 02:06 The only difference now is that each slide in our slide deck that
- 02:09 uses this particular layout will automatically contain our logo.
- 02:13 Watch as we add new slides to our slide deck.
- 02:18 At this point, we can dress up our master slides as little or as much as we need to.
- 02:23 We can add more objects, add shadows or
- 02:25 reflections to those objects, even add video.
- 02:28 One limitation that we have whenn working with master slides is with animations.
- 02:33 We won't be able to add builds or actions to our master slides.
- 02:36 Outside of that, it's time to let your creativity take over.
- 02:40 Take some time now to make changes to an existing master slide and
- 02:43 see what happens when you do.
- 02:45 I think you will be amazed at how flexible it can be for you.
