Adding a text box
In this module, you will learn how to add or change text on a shape, and how to add horizontal and/or vertical text boxes, that can be moved anywhere on your diagram.
Instructions
To add or change text to that shape:
- Click on any shape and start to type.
To add a horizontal or vertical text box anywhere on the diagram:
- Click on the Insert Tab, then the Text Box icon.
- 00:04 I showed you in the last lesson that you can click on one of your shapes and
- 00:08 then start to type in text and the text will be associated with that shape.
- 00:13 Now if you want to change the text on a shape, you can click on it then you
- 00:18 click on the Home menu, and then you click on the word Text right here,
- 00:23 and then you'll be able to change the text associated with that shape.
- 00:28 When you're done with the text tool, come over here and
- 00:31 pick on the pointer tool and your mouse will go back to normal.
- 00:35 All right, so you can always click on a shape.
- 00:38 Pick on the word Text here.
- 00:40 It's called the text tool, and then change the text from there.
- 00:44 When you're done with that, make sure you pick on the pointer tool.
- 00:48 Now let's say I want to text anywhere else in the diagram.
- 00:52 Well, then we can add a text box.
- 00:54 So I'm going to pick on the Insert menu up top, Insert, and then we have text box.
- 01:01 So it can be a horizontal text box or a vertical text box.
- 01:05 So I'm going to say draw horizontal text box.
- 01:09 And then you move your mouse somewhere and
- 01:13 I'm going to click over here and I'll say our first Visio diagram.
- 01:21 And then just click away from that.
- 01:24 And now to format that text, I can click on the text box,
- 01:28 of course I can move that, I can reposition it naturally.
- 01:32 Then you pick on the Home menu and
- 01:34 you see a lot of your classic formatting over here as you can see.
- 01:38 So that was a horizontal text box.
- 01:41 Let's say I want text going along the side or
- 01:44 maybe even somewhere within the diagram.
- 01:47 Once again, I'll pick on the word Insert, and
- 01:49 then we're going to click on the pulldown for the text box.
- 01:53 And I'll say vertical text box, good.
- 01:56 So maybe over here on the side,
- 02:01 I'm going to click here and I'll type in
- 02:05 login decision tree.
- 02:10 And you can see how the text comes up vertical.
- 02:13 So just click over here.
- 02:15 So naturally I can just pick up that text and move it around.
- 02:19 Obviously we can format text on the Home Menu.
- 02:22 So you can associate a text with an actual shape.
- 02:26 You would click on that shape and type in the text.
- 02:29 If it already has text and you want to change it then you pick on the shape and
- 02:34 then you pick on the text tool, and then you'll be able to type over that text.
- 02:38 When you're done with the text tool, pick the pointer tool,
- 02:42 you always go back to the pointer tool.
- 02:44 The other way to add text onto your diagram
- 02:46 is to pick on the Insert menu, and then we'll say a text box.
- 02:51 And it can be either a horizontal text box or a vertical text box.
- 02:55 You can have as many text boxes in your diagram as you need.
- 02:58 And then of course those can be moved or repositioned.
- 03:02 If I click on the text box, then of course, I can use my home menu,
- 03:06 to format the text as we can see.
- 03:09 So that should give you some ideas of how to add text onto your Visio diagram.
