Instructions
To create an org chart:
- Start a new Visio diagram, and click on the Organization Chart template.
- Click on the Organization Chart Wizard icon to make it from scratch, and then click on Create. On the next screen, click on Cancel.
- You will see the Organization Chart stencils on the left. Start dragging the shapes in from the stencils.
- 00:04 Another great use for Visio is being able to make an organization chart or
- 00:08 an org chart.
- 00:09 So let's go into Visio.
- 00:12 And notice how there's an organization chart template.
- 00:14 So we're going to click that.
- 00:17 Now, you could use one of these.
- 00:19 If you use one of these, then it'll give you a tremendous head start and
- 00:24 make your Visio diagram look exactly like one of these.
- 00:29 However, we're going to make it from scratch.
- 00:30 So I'm going to click on that and I'll click on create.
- 00:34 Now, you could actually import the data from a data source, but
- 00:39 in this case, I'm just going to actually cancel the chart wizard.
- 00:43 And we're just going to build it from scratch now.
- 00:45 Because we used the organization chart template,
- 00:49 then we have the organization chart stencil, as you can see.
- 00:53 So I'm going to move in the executive belt.
- 00:56 And maybe that's like your CEO or something like that.
- 00:59 We're just going to drag it in there.
- 01:01 If I look at that it has the word title there and the word name.
- 01:04 So I'll type in the title first, I'll type in CEO.
- 01:08 Then I'm going to click in the spot where it says name and
- 01:11 say I'll type in my own name, all right?
- 01:15 Okay.
- 01:16 Now with each of these different shapes in
- 01:19 the organization chart should be able to add a picture.
- 01:22 So I'm going to click on that little person there.
- 01:26 Now watch what I'm going to do.
- 01:28 You get the org chart menu when you're on the org chart, and
- 01:31 then I'm going to change the picture.
- 01:33 All right,
- 01:33 so I'll pick on change, and then you pick a picture from your computer.
- 01:38 So I'm actually going to use my picture there, and I'll pick on open.
- 01:42 Okay, so notice how that actually filled in with that shape.
- 01:46 Now below the executive belt, maybe I have a manager.
- 01:52 So watch what I'm going to do.
- 01:54 I'm going to pick up the manager belt and drag it right on to that.
- 01:59 And it's smart enough to know that I want that manager below that person, you see,
- 02:03 watch again.
- 02:04 I pick up the manager belt and drag it right into the CEO and
- 02:08 is smart enough to know that I want a manager under the CEO.
- 02:12 And I'll do it another time.
- 02:14 And notice how strong those lines and drawing those shapes.
- 02:18 Remember each of the different shapes can have a title and a name and
- 02:22 even the picture.
- 02:24 So let's try something different now.
- 02:26 I want to add a position under the manager.
- 02:31 So pick on position and drag it into the manager.
- 02:34 And again, you can see exactly what's going on there.
- 02:36 Now also for the CEO, maybe the CEO has an assistant.
- 02:41 So I'll pick on the assistant belt and drag it into the CEO.
- 02:44 And then look what it did, it actually put the assistant on their own level,
- 02:48 and then the managers are there.
- 02:50 And then this person reports to that manager.
- 02:54 Now you can do them one at a time like that, or
- 02:57 these two icons help you do more than one at a time.
- 03:01 So if I pick on, let's say, I want this manager to have multiple people.
- 03:06 So I'll click on the one that says three positions and
- 03:10 just drag it into that manager.
- 03:12 And now drew three people automatically, right?
- 03:15 So that was pretty good.
- 03:17 What if I want four or five or more than that?
- 03:20 So I'll pick on multiple shapes and just drag it to this manager.
- 03:26 And then I want those to be a position.
- 03:29 And then let's say I'm going to make that five people.
- 03:32 And then right away, I added five people underneath that person.
- 03:36 Because we use the organization chart template right at the beginning,
- 03:41 it gave us the organization chart stencil.
- 03:44 And you can see exactly how those work.
- 03:47 Especially if you drag a shape onto another person,
- 03:51 then that's exactly what's going to happen.
- 03:53 So I'll add another manager under the CEO.
- 03:56 And it actually redrew, draws the boxes and so on, as you can see.
- 04:00 So then of course, you would click on each shape and fill in the name and
- 04:05 the title, and even the picture.
- 04:07 So that was a pretty good way to make an organization chart here in Visio.
