Instructions
To create a room diagram:
- Start a new Visio diagram, and click on the Office Layout template.
- Click on the Office Layout icon to make it from scratch, and then click on Create.
- You will see the office and room stencils on the left. Start dragging the shapes in from the stencils.
- 00:04 So let's click a room diagram with Visio.
- 00:07 So I'm going to go into Visio again.
- 00:09 And then we're going to use another template.
- 00:12 So over here, I'll click on more templates.
- 00:15 And there's so many great ones that you can experiment with, right?
- 00:18 I mean, people use Visio for many different reasons.
- 00:21 But let's go ahead and pick on the office layout here.
- 00:23 And if you look down here, there's other templates that you can certainly use or
- 00:30 you can search for them as well, and there's many online.
- 00:33 So, I'm going to go ahead and pick on this one, and I'll pick on create.
- 00:38 Now, notice because of that template, gives us office furniture as a stencil,
- 00:43 the office equipment, which also includes some of the PCs, and the appliers,
- 00:48 and things like that.
- 00:50 And then we have walls, doors and the windows.
- 00:53 So first, we're going to make our room.
- 00:55 So in the walls, doors and windows stencil, so
- 00:58 I'm going to pick on the room and just drag it in.
- 01:01 Okay, so the room has some special qualities to it.
- 01:04 I'm going to go ahead and stretch this out.
- 01:06 Now obviously, if I want that to be a certain size,
- 01:10 maybe I will use the size and position window that we used in a different lesson.
- 01:14 So, I'm going to go ahead and click on that room shape.
- 01:18 I'm going to go back and pick on view, and then task panes, and then size, and
- 01:21 position.
- 01:22 Maybe I know that's going to be 25 feet by 15.
- 01:28 So here I can get very, very specific as you can see.
- 01:31 All right, so I want to make that 25 by 15,
- 01:36 I'm just kind of moving that so it's in the center of the diagram.
- 01:40 But that size and position window is how we can get really specific here.
- 01:45 I'm going to put that away.
- 01:46 I pick on task panes, and size, and position to put that away.
- 01:49 So, I like to have a door in this room, right?
- 01:54 So let's say the door is on this side.
- 01:57 So watch what we're going to do.
- 01:58 We'll pick up the door shape and drag it into the room shape.
- 02:05 And then add out of the door onto that right.
- 02:08 Of course it could have more doors.
- 02:10 So maybe on the other side over here, maybe there's a window.
- 02:13 So I pick up the window and drag it into the room shape.
- 02:18 And now that at that window in, right.
- 02:20 So the room shape has certain qualities, that we can add the door to it.
- 02:26 We can add windows.
- 02:28 Maybe that room is broken down with a wall.
- 02:33 So I'm going to go ahead and pick on the wall shape and drag it in.
- 02:36 So with the wall shape, then maybe I can move it.
- 02:39 So, I'm just going to rotate, and move it to that end of the room shape,
- 02:45 and maybe the wall's over here, okay?
- 02:49 And then maybe the wall continues all the way down,
- 02:53 so I'll resize that, good.
- 02:56 Maybe that's like the divider for the room.
- 02:59 But, what do you think I want there?
- 03:01 Well, I want to door there, otherwise can't get to this other side.
- 03:05 So I'll pick up the door again and drag it onto the wall.
- 03:08 So you see what's happening.
- 03:10 We can actually construct the room, because we use the office template.
- 03:16 We got the office equipment, the office furniture and the walls, doors and
- 03:19 windows stencil.
- 03:21 So let's add some office equipment now, or some office furniture.
- 03:25 We're going to add a table here.
- 03:27 We'll just drag the table in, and
- 03:30 maybe that's going to be over here, and we'll give them a desk chair, right?
- 03:35 And notice how I'm just going to rotate the desk chair so
- 03:37 it's facing the table, maybe they would have wanted over here.
- 03:42 So of course we could just move the shapes,
- 03:44 like we were talking about the whole time.
- 03:45 And I want to rotate that.
- 03:49 And I'll move it closer to the desk.
- 03:53 So, it looks like I have room for another desk in there now as well.
- 03:57 So I'll pick up another table and move it right into here.
- 04:04 And then we'll move.
- 04:05 Now if I want to copy that chair, remember one of the things we talked about was,
- 04:09 I want to move a mouse to the chair, hold down my control key and
- 04:12 just drag it down here, so it's the same size.
- 04:14 So maybe in this other room, I want another table,
- 04:19 right, and another chair.
- 04:22 Of course we're going to rotate that chair, so it's facing the table, good.
- 04:27 And then we'll move another table over here.
- 04:32 See how I'm using those guidelines to make sure things can be lined up.
- 04:36 Move the chair into there, good.
- 04:40 Now see, that one isn't going to be the same size as that one.
- 04:43 But, there's many ways to make sure it's going to be the same size.
- 04:46 But maybe one of those was let's delete that one, and
- 04:48 just move the mouse to that one.
- 04:50 Hold down my control key, just drag it down so
- 04:52 I know they're going to be the same size, good.
- 04:55 So let's say we need, how about if we had a cabinet.
- 05:00 So we'll have a storage unit, and
- 05:02 maybe the storage unit is going to be one over here.
- 05:04 And maybe we'll have another storage unit in this office as well, good.
- 05:10 All right, so we started off by using the office type of template,
- 05:16 and there's other room templates out there as well.
- 05:19 So that gave us the office equipment stencil.
- 05:23 So let's say we're going to add a PC onto the desk over here.
- 05:30 PC on this desk, PC on this desk and a PC on this desk, good.
- 05:34 So then maybe on the storage cabinet we have the printer.
- 05:39 I came with the office equipment stencil.
- 05:41 A lot of good shapes in there.
- 05:43 And then we have the office furniture stencil.
- 05:48 And then the walls, doors and windows.
- 05:51 So first we added the room, right?
- 05:54 And then I added a couple of doors into the room,
- 05:57 we added the wall, we added the window over here.
- 06:01 And now you have an idea of how to start to make a room layout,
- 06:05 with Microsoft Visio.
