Add a Cover Page
How to add a pre-designed cover page to your document.
When to use
A cover page is a professional finish to a college level term paper, or a business report. It gives the document a final and polished look.
Instructions:
Note: It is a good practice to View, Navigation Pane.
This allows you to observe the pages on the left panel.
Insert
1. Using the exercise file, click under the first line of text, or you can use a blank Word document.
2. On the INSERT ribbon, Pages group, click “Cover Page”.
The Navigation Pane shows the cover page above the original page.
3. Undo (Ctrl Z) so the cover page is removed.
4. Insert a second page in your document: Click under the text and press Ctrl Enter (or Ctrl Return).
The Navigation Pane shows two pages.
5. While insertion point is still on page 2, on the INSERT ribbon, Pages group, click “Cover Page”.
The Navigation Pane shows the cover page at the top of the document regardless of where you were clicked in the document.
Edit
To edit the cover page, click into the pre-formatted fields and fill in the information. You also have the option to move and resize the frames. Make sure to click the edges of the frames to move them.
Remove
To remove a cover page:
1. On the INSERT ribbon, Pages group, click “Cover Page”.
2. Choose “Remove Current Cover Page”.
Login to download- 00:04 Taking the pages lesson a step further, we're going to work with cover pages.
- 00:09 I still do have my navigation pane on, so that was, of course,
- 00:12 done on the View > Navigation Pane, put a check mark here.
- 00:14 And we are going to work with cover pages, which are located on the Insert ribbon,
- 00:19 Pages button, and right over here, we have an option that says Cover Pages.
- 00:23 All right, let's go ahead and take a look at what we're working on.
- 00:25 I've got the exercise.
- 00:27 And it basically says, follow the lesson.
- 00:30 It's great if you just click along with me on a different monitor while you're
- 00:33 listening to these videos, so you can practice while I do this.
- 00:36 But most important, I want you to look at the Navigation Pane.
- 00:38 We simply have this nice navigation pane right here with one single sheet.
- 00:42 Now, what happens when you add a cover page,
- 00:45 is the cover page comes in as page zero.
- 00:48 See, it doesn't mess with the page numbering of your document.
- 00:51 So I'm gonna go ahead and click on Cover Page, and
- 00:53 we have quite a few that I can scroll through and choose from.
- 00:56 I also have More Pages from Office.com, so it's going to look out online, or
- 01:01 we could remove the current page.
- 01:02 So I'm gonna go ahead and choose this option right here, the Whisp design.
- 01:07 And there I have it.
- 01:08 Now, notice, on the Navigation Pane, it says Page 0, and then, my Page 1.
- 01:13 So as soon as you have the Navigation Pane,
- 01:16 or this page on your screen, you might wanna do some work with it.
- 01:20 So back in a previous lesson, we had talked about the View ribbon, and
- 01:24 the zoom controls underneath.
- 01:26 In fact, I like this so
- 01:26 much that I do have them added to my quick access toolbar using that often.
- 01:31 So I wanna see just one full page on my screen.
- 01:33 So I'm gonna click the One page button, it just allows me to see this.
- 01:37 Now, I can click in here and work with the different segments.
- 01:40 Here's the reality of the cover pages, they are art work, all right?
- 01:45 They are absolutely art work, which means, they're a bunch of shapes and
- 01:49 text boxes put together to make a nice little design.
- 01:52 You have total control of these.
- 01:54 You can move these little whisk of the weeds here off to wherever you want.
- 01:58 You can completely destroy this entire thing.
- 02:00 Let me tell you, but you can click in here and type today's date, or
- 02:04 you can move this arrow somewhere else.
- 02:06 All right, so the reality is, even though it brings you into design,
- 02:10 you can change whatever you want about that design.
- 02:13 Well, I want to add another page here.
- 02:15 So I'm gonna come into my page two, and right up here,
- 02:18 I'm going to hit Ctrl + Enter to force a page break right here, Ctrl + Enter.
- 02:23 So that gives me Page 2.
- 02:25 So technically, I have a three-page document.
- 02:28 You can look at the bottom left of the Microsoft program, it says Page 3 of 3,
- 02:32 and yet, the page numbering is just Page 0 for the cover, Page 1 and Page 2.
- 02:37 So in the future, when I apply page numbering, it'll just give me Page 1 and
- 02:41 2, the three pieces of paper, we'll print.
- 02:43 Well, I wanna get rid of that cover page.
- 02:45 I completely wrecked it, it's destroyed, let's get rid of it.
- 02:49 Let's go back to the Insert ribbon,
- 02:50 right over here on the left is Pages, Cover Page.
- 02:53 Check this out, right down here, Remove Current Cover Page, click.
- 02:58 When I get rid of that, check out what happened to my page number,
- 03:00 it fix them automatically, it knows that our cover page is Page 0, and
- 03:05 it knows when the cover page is gone, that your Page 1 should that be Page 1,
- 03:09 Page 2, and so forth.
- 03:11 So please go ahead and practice with that, it's a great lesson.
- 03:14 It's very professional to add cover pages on, and
- 03:17 then, just redesign them or tweak them a little to your personal preference.
