Bullets and Numbering
Find the Bullet and Numbering 'switches' (which means they turn on and off with the same button) on the Home Ribbon, Paragraph Group.
When to use
Use the Bullets and Numbering buttons when there is a list of items that need a sequential order.
Instructions
- Click the list of text (or paragraphs) where you want to apply Bullets or Numbering.
- Click the Bullet button, (or Numbering button)
- To turn off a bullet or number from a certain line item,
- Select that line item
- Click the Bullet button, (or Numbering button) to disable it for that line
- If you would like a more interesting bullet or a different numbering pattern, make sure to click the Drop Down arrows on either of the bullet & numbering buttons and explore the options.
Tips:
- Alt + Shift + up/down arrows to move list items around while maintaining numbering order.
- 00:04 In this exercise, let's play with some Bullets and Numbering,
- 00:08 such a fun exercise.
- 00:09 First of all, you need to know that Bullets and Numbering, the buttons right
- 00:13 up here in the Paragraph group of the Home ribbon, they're simply switches.
- 00:16 They're either on or they're off, it's not that tricky.
- 00:19 Let's go ahead and first select the list and then turn on bullets.
- 00:23 Click, then they're on, click, and they're off.
- 00:25 How about numbering?
- 00:26 Click and it's on, click and it's off, just like that.
- 00:30 Let's go ahead and turn bullets back on, and notice the polka dots,
- 00:34 the dot of each bullet.
- 00:35 Well, with them still selected, I'm changing my mind.
- 00:37 I'm going to hit the drop down arrow, and
- 00:40 I can see all of the recent bullets that I chose.
- 00:43 Or drawing your eyes to the bottom, Define New Bullet.
- 00:46 Let's go ahead and click that one.
- 00:48 Inside this, we have Font styles, we have Pictures,
- 00:51 you can literally go get a picture of someone or something and
- 00:54 use that as a bullet, or we have Symbol right here.
- 00:57 Symbol is a fun one.
- 00:58 Symbol shows you every sort of bullet symbol available by each font
- 01:03 style loaded on your computer.
- 01:06 My particular favorite ones are WebDings, WebDings and WingDings 2 and 3.
- 01:12 Great fun, very creative.
- 01:14 So in here, you can actually click around and find anything,
- 01:17 maybe little weight lifters, and hit OK.
- 01:20 And there we have little weight lifters as bullets.
- 01:22 Now I don't like that so much, so I'm just going to go with a regular check mark,
- 01:26 I like that better.
- 01:27 Okay, I'm going to click on the very top bullet and
- 01:30 it selects all of them, and now I can literally change the color of the bullet.
- 01:35 What if there's one of these that I don't want to have as a bulleted item?
- 01:38 I can just select that particular one and turn off the bullet on that item.
- 01:43 Change my mind and turn it back on, it's that easy.
- 01:46 Now, I'm going to go ahead and select that range again, turn off bullets, and
- 01:50 switch over to numbering.
- 01:53 Click on the numbers and hit the drop down arrow to see your options.
- 01:57 You have numbers with parentheses, capital letters, lowercase letters,
- 02:01 lowercase numbers.
- 02:03 Okay, I'm going to stick with the 1, 2, 3 on this particular one.
- 02:07 And I'm going to add one at the bottom.
- 02:09 And I'm going to call this one Produce, because that's going to be the title.
- 02:13 So I'm going to click on that particular one, turn off the bullet for that item,
- 02:18 but I'd like to move it up to the top.
- 02:20 Well, I can select it and click and drag it.
- 02:24 Always allowed to click and drag.
- 02:26 Ctrl+Z to undo that and put it back at the bottom.
- 02:29 Another way to do that is to select it and use Alt+Shift+Up or Down arrow to hop,
- 02:34 skip, jump through the paragraphs.
- 02:36 So I'm going to hold down Alt, hold down Shift, and use my up arrow, up, up, up,
- 02:41 and it makes its way to the top.
- 02:43 Now the rest of these, I'm going to go ahead and color apples red.
- 02:48 And it colors the entire line, the number and the word.
- 02:52 And now I'm going to simply alphabetize these.
- 02:54 So I'll select the list, and up in the Paragraph section,
- 02:58 we have the sorting button, which we did in the last lesson as well.
- 03:02 I'll click that, Sort by Paragraphs, hit OK.
- 03:05 Now watch what happens to the red apples.
- 03:08 They renumbered themselves, but still stayed the same red color.
- 03:13 This is awesome what you can do with Bullets and Numbering and
- 03:16 just remember, the biggest lesson in this whole video is that these are switches.
- 03:21 If you don't want numbers on, simply turn them off.
- 03:25 If you don't want bullets on, simply turn them off.
- 03:28 Okay, go ahead and practice with the list and have fun with it.
