Add a Cover Page
Adding a pre-designed cover page on your document looks professional and saves time in designing from scratch.
When to use
A cover page is a professional finish to a college-level term paper or a business report. It gives the document a final and polished look.
Instructions:
Note: It is a good practice to View, Navigation Pane.
This allows you to observe the pages on the left panel.
Insert
1. Using the exercise file, click under the first line of text, or you can use a blank Word document.
2. On the INSERT ribbon, Pages group, click “Cover Page”.
The Navigation Pane shows the cover page above the original page.
3. Undo (Ctrl-Z) so the cover page is removed.
4. Insert a second page in your document: Click under the text and press Ctrl-Enter (or Ctrl-Return).
The Navigation Pane shows two pages.
5. While the insertion point is still on page 2, on the INSERT ribbon, Pages group, click “Cover Page”.
The Navigation Pane shows the cover page at the top of the document regardless of where you were in the document.
Edit
To edit the cover page, click into the pre-formatted fields and fill in the information. You also have the option to move and resize the frames or delete them. Make sure to click the edges of the frames to move them.
Remove
To remove a cover page:
1. On the INSERT ribbon, Pages group, click “Cover Page”.
2. Choose “Remove Current Cover Page”.
Tip: The cover page will always appear at the top and as Page 0 regardless of where the insertion point is inside the document.
Login to download- 00:04 Let's go ahead and talk about cover pages and why we want them.
- 00:07 Sometimes we do a nice entry page for a report or manuscript.
- 00:13 We can find the cover pages on the Insert ribbon on the left-hand side.
- 00:17 We have Cover Page and the drop-down arrow with many, many pages in here.
- 00:23 We can choose any of these we want.
- 00:25 We can do More Cover Pages from Office.com, and
- 00:28 note Remove Current Cover Page if we don't want one when we're done.
- 00:32 Well, let's go ahead and click this, but before I do,
- 00:35 I want to point something out.
- 00:36 Please notice my Navigation Pane.
- 00:37 I already have two pages created, Page 1 and Page 2.
- 00:42 And they're numbered accordingly, Page 1, Page 2.
- 00:45 Watch what happens when we add the cover page.
- 00:48 Click on Insert, click Cover Page, scroll through, find anyone you want.
- 00:52 I rather like this one, so I'm going to click on this particular one, and
- 00:56 there it is on my screen.
- 00:58 But look at the Navigation Pane.
- 01:01 What page number is that?
- 01:02 0.
- 01:03 The reason that happens is when I want to apply page numbering,
- 01:07 it will not number the title page.
- 01:09 It will number correctly, even though it's Page 2 on our screen right here,
- 01:13 it is technically Page 1 of the document, Page 2.
- 01:16 This solves a huge problem for you later.
- 01:20 You don't have to fight page numbering to make sure there's no number that lands on
- 01:24 the front one, I love it.
- 01:26 Now, let's talk about this particular page.
- 01:29 Now, on the View ribbon, we do have our zoom controls.
- 01:34 I do want to look at One Page to see everything on this screen.
- 01:38 This is artwork.
- 01:40 When I click on any of these objects,
- 01:42 I get a brand new ribbon at the top called Picture Formats.
- 01:45 It might be a drawing format, something like that.
- 01:48 You can move these around, you can completely destroy this thing,
- 01:52 move these anywhere you want them.
- 01:54 Oops, Ctrl+Z to undo, if something goes badly.
- 02:00 They also have fields built into them.
- 02:05 And you can retype anything you want as your headings.
- 02:09 You can put in today's date.
- 02:10 It's just prompting you.
- 02:11 You don't have to enter these things, but it's prompting you for a nice report page.
- 02:15 If you want to change the color of these, go to the Picture Format and
- 02:18 change the color.
- 02:19 This isn't a lesson on pictures,
- 02:21 it's just saying these cover pages are simply artwork.
- 02:25 If I'm finished with this, and I decide, hmm, that was a good report, but
- 02:30 really, don't want that cover page at all.
- 02:33 Let's go remove it, but I want to show you something.
- 02:35 Just click on the bottom page, click way down here on Page 2.
- 02:40 But I'm going to scroll up so I can see the cover page.
- 02:43 Go ahead and click on the Insert ribbon > Cover Page > Remove Current Cover Page.
- 02:49 It knows that the cover page is Page 0.
- 02:51 Even though I'm clicked on Page 2, it's not going to accidentally remove Page 2.
- 02:58 Go ahead and click this, gone.
- 02:59 So my Page 1 and my Page 2 are the originals again.
- 03:04 To end this, let's go ahead and put a cover page back in there.
- 03:06 Go ahead and choose a different one, anyone you like.
