Create a Pumpkin Face

Quick reference

• 00:04 So all you need to complete a tutorial like this is a picture of
• 00:07 either a fruit or a vegetable or some sort of an object and a picture of a human.
• 00:12 It can be a child.
• 00:12 It can be an adult.
• 00:13 It can be an old person, it doesn't matter.
• 00:15 We're going to be using this photo.
• 00:17 And both these photos I found over at Shutterstock.com.
• 00:19 Which is where I get all of my images because they're incredibly high quality.
• 00:23 And all you have got to do to begin is drag this photo of
• 00:26 your human onto the photo of the pumpkin.
• 00:29 So I am going to go ahead and drag this right up to the top to this tab,
• 00:32 it should switch over, and I can place it right on top.
• 00:35 Now when both photos are on the same document,
• 00:37 it is a good idea to decrease the opacity of the top photo.
• 00:41 So you can see exactly where you are placing it.
• 00:43 We're gonna focus on the mouth for now, we'll get to the eyes later.
• 00:46 So I'm gonna decrease the opacity of the top layer.
• 00:49 I can easily do that with the number keys on my keyboard.
• 00:52 I'm gonna press the number six for 60% opacity.
• 00:55 And now I can move it into place.
• 00:57 I'm gonna put the mouth right around there.
• 01:00 Now, once it's in place, I can press 0 to bring it back up to 100% opacity.
• 01:05 I'm gonna zoom in just a little bit.
• 01:07 And at this point,
• 01:08 now that it's in place, we need to get rid of everything but the mouth.
• 01:12 We're not gonna be super specific on our first selection,
• 01:14 we're gonna be a little bit sloppy.
• 01:16 I'm gonna very quickly grab my elliptical marquis tool from the tools bar.
• 01:20 And make a very basic selection around the mouth.
• 01:23 You can use any selection method that you want.
• 01:25 You can start out very specific using the Pen tool, or
• 01:28 start out very sloppy using a Marque tool.
• 01:31 So once your selection is in place we want to get rid of everything else.
• 01:35 Now we could be very destructive and just delete everything else.
• 01:39 But just in case we wanna bring back those areas we're gonna be using layer masks.
• 01:43 And to do that, at the bottom of your layers panel,
• 01:45 just press the add layer mask button right there.
• 01:48 That will hide everything, but what was in your selection.
• 01:52 And because we're using layer mask,
• 01:53 we can easily hide additional information with the brush tool.
• 01:58 And to do that I'm going to press the letter b on my keyboard to switch over to
• 02:01 Brush tool.
• 02:02 And then I am going to right-click on my document to bring up my brush picker.
• 02:05 We are going to use a standard, soft brush, so
• 02:08 I am going to go ahead and decrease the hardness of this brush to 0%.
• 02:11 And I am going to increase the size a little bit and
• 02:14 at any point I want to increase the size or decrease the size even more.
• 02:17 I can use my right square bracket key to increase, or
• 02:21 left square bracket key to decrease.
• 02:23 I'm gonna leave it right around there.
• 02:25 And I'm gonna go around the perimeter of the mouth and
• 02:29 just do a very basic job at getting rid of everything but the lips and the teeth.
• 02:41 Perfect. So
• 02:42 now that I've done that, I'm gonna go ahead and
• 02:44 right click on my document one more time and increase the hardness.
• 02:48 So I have a little bit more of an accurate result.
• 02:51 I'm gonna go around one more time.
• 02:53 Now, on the top, I'm gonna get rid of most of the lip.
• 02:56 I don't want any of the lip,
• 02:57 so it looks like it's going inwards, towards the pumpkin's center.
• 03:03 But at the bottom, I want a little bit of lip, down at the bottom there.
• 03:08 And the nice thing is because it's supposed to be like a carving you could
• 03:12 leave it very sharp and it'll still be believable.
• 03:19 Okay, we'll leave it at that for now we can always come back and
• 03:22 make adjustments to the layer mask as needed.
• 03:24 At this point your probably noticing that the lips don't really match the pumpkin.
• 03:29 So we need to make some color adjustments.
• 03:31 And to do that we could use something like replace color, but
• 03:34 that'll be a little bit destructive.
• 03:35 So we're gonna be using adjustment layers.
• 03:38 Again, that can be found at the bottom of your layers panel, right over here.
• 03:41 And we have all these adjustment layers to work with.
• 03:44 We're gonna start with hue and saturation.
• 03:46 We're gonna see if that does the trick.
• 03:48 Now once the hue and saturation properties are visible, you wanna click on Colorize.
• 03:53 It's gonna apply an overlay to the whole entire image.
• 03:56 And we're gonna deal with that in a second.
• 03:58 Let's go ahead and turn this orange.
• 04:01 Slide the hue slider to the right.
• 04:03 We're gonna crank up the saturation.
• 04:05 Orange is a pretty saturated color.
• 04:08 And make some adjustments to the hue as needed.
• 04:10 So that looks pretty good right there.
• 04:13 We can always come back and
• 04:14 make changes as needed, that's the great thing about adjustment layers.
• 04:17 Now you're probably noticing that it's affecting everything underneath that
• 04:20 adjustment layer.
• 04:22 Well what we need to do is press this button right here,
• 04:24 which is gonna clip it to the previous layer.
• 04:28 Perfect.
• 04:28 So now the pumpkin is not affected by the adjustment layer, only the mouth is,
• 04:33 which is exactly what we want.
• 04:34 But you're probably noticing something else.
• 04:36 The teeth are affected.
• 04:37 We don't want orange teeth.
• 04:39 The nice things about adjustment layers is that it comes with a layer mask.
• 04:42 So one more time I can grab my brush tool.
• 04:44 I'm gonna make it a nice, soft brush.
• 04:47 And just brush around the teeth.
• 04:49 And that'll bring back the color of teeth.
• 04:56 Perfect, that's looking much better.
• 04:58 You can also add other adjustments,
• 05:00 let's say levels to play around with the tones of your image.
• 05:03 Remember to always clip it to the previous layer so
• 05:05 it's not affecting the whole entire image.
• 05:08 And you are going to notice as I am adjusting the levels,
• 05:10 things are starting to blend a little bit more.
• 05:13 So you definitely want to experiment with some of the adjustment layers to
• 05:16 get the best result you can.
• 05:19 And again, adjustment layers have layer masks, so
• 05:22 I can always go in and paint over the teeth.
• 05:24 Just to get rid of that level's adjustment on the teeth if I don't want it there.
• 05:31 There we go.
• 05:32 That's looking much better.
• 05:33 Now, if you noticed any part that might be looking a little bit strange,
• 05:36 you can always go back to the layer mask of the mouth.
• 05:39 Grab a white brush, and
• 05:41 you can paint in some of the areas that you want to bring back.
• 05:43 Like right in the corner here, I might want to round it off a little bit.
• 05:48 Perfect. That's looking great.
• 05:50 So, now the mouth is pretty much finished.
• 05:52 I'm pretty happy with it.
• 05:53 We're gonna go on to the eyes.
• 05:55 Now, we could use the same layer.
• 05:57 But to keep things simple, I'm actually going to go back to this image.
• 06:00 I'm gonna drag in a new copy of the image, and drop it in place.
• 06:04 Now, if you do have clipped layers, it might fall right into the mouth.
• 06:08 So that looks a little bit ridiculous.
• 06:10 You want to go back to your layers panel,
• 06:11 right-click on that layer and release the clipping mask.
• 06:15 That'll bring that image back.
• 06:17 Now we can reduce the opacity one more time.
• 06:20 Now these eyes are probably a little bit to big.
• 06:22 We probably want to bring them down a little bit.
• 06:24 So, Cmd or Ctrl+t will enter free transform mode.
• 06:28 And if the image is too big that you can't see the bounding box, Cmd or
• 06:32 Ctrl+0 will zoom out so you can see everything.
• 06:36 And, of course, Alt or
• 06:37 Option + Shift and drag down will scale that image and constrain the proportions.
• 06:45 I'm gonna leave it right around there, press Return or
• 06:48 Enter to accept the transformation.
• 06:52 All right, one more time press 0 to bring back the opacity to 100%.
• 06:55 So now at this point we want to isolate the eyes,
• 06:59 one more time I'm gonna grab my marque tool.
• 07:01 And make a very simple selection around each eye.
• 07:04 Now once the first selection has been made,
• 07:07 hold down your Shift key to add to that selection.
• 07:11 And at any point you want to move the selection as you're creating it,
• 07:14 hold down your space bar.
• 07:15 You can move it wherever you like.
• 07:16 All right, I'm gonna leave it right around there and just like I did before.
• 07:23 And can press the add layer mask button to hide everything else outside my selection.
• 07:28 Now at this point we wanna do the exact same thing that we did before,
• 07:30 we wanna grab our brush tool, make sure it's set to black.
• 07:34 And then right-click and set the hardness.
• 07:36 For this one, I'm gonna set the hardness a little bit higher than the other one
• 07:39 because we have less room to work with.
• 07:41 Press Return, decrease my brush with my left square bracket key.
• 07:45 And start to brush around the edges of the eyes to remove the skin that we
• 07:49 don't need.
• 08:00 Okay so that's done now we could go in and use another hue and
• 08:02 saturation adjustment layer.
• 08:04 But I wanna show you one more thing that you could do,
• 08:06 we can actually use a layer style to give the impression of depth.
• 08:10 We're gonna go ahead and
• 08:11 double click on this layer to bring up our layer styles dialogue box.
• 08:15 And I'm gonna be using a bevel and emboss.
• 08:17 Now, once I'm in here, we want to emboss this into the pumpkin.
• 08:21 So I'm gonna click on style and choose Emboss.
• 08:24 I'm gonna make sure it's going downwards.
• 08:27 And then I can increase the size a little bit.
• 08:31 And increase the depth to make it a little bit sharper.
• 08:34 Now down here I'm gonna turn off global lights.
• 08:36 So I have 120 and 30, which should give me a nice result.
• 08:40 But down here we want to focus on the colors, under the highlight and
• 08:43 shadow mode.
• 08:44 For the highlight mode, I'm gonna click on the white.
• 08:46 And I'm gonna sample a light color in this image.
• 08:49 Somewhere right around here, this light yellow.
• 08:51 Now press OK, and change it to, let's say color dodge and
• 08:55 turn down the opacity just a little bit.
• 08:57 That will give us a nice highlight underneath the eye.
• 09:00 Now for the shadow mode, I am going to sample one of the dark colors here
• 09:03 at the bottom and decrease the opacity just a touch.
• 09:07 And of course you can come back up here and adjust the dept and size as needed.
• 09:14 Perfect. Now once that's done,
• 09:15 we have a little bit of depth, but we still see a little bit of skin.
• 09:18 So you can go back and click on your layer mask.
• 09:20 And with a black brush you can go back and
• 09:22 just get rid of some of the skin that might be left over.
• 09:25 There isn't too much, but there is just a little bit.
• 09:27 And again, you could use adjustment layers, but
• 09:30 I did wanna show you another way you can do it.
• 09:32 In case, you're not too familiar with adjustment layers.
• 09:35 And that should do it.
• 09:36 A human face on a pumpkin.
• 09:38 Of course, you can use any fruit or vegetable that you want.
• 09:41 It can be an orange, an apple, a pineapple, a mango.
• 09:44 It really doesn't matter.
