Quick reference
Topic
Create a detailed paper ticket.
When to use
This is great for paper textures, and designed not to be a square. Learn how to boule shapes to create new ones, and add rough textures to the edges.
Instructions
Create the base shape
- Grab the standard Rectangle Tool.
- Change color to de-saturated red B3 76 77 (in Options Bar)
- Drag out rectangle
Punch out the notches on the side
- On the Options bar, make sure that the ‘Subtract From Shape Area’ button is active.

- Set the Corner Radius on the Options Bar to 5 pixels
- Drag out a rectangle inside the ticket
Add layer styles to the ticket Indent
- Decrease the Fill Opacity to 0%
- Inner Shadow: Blend Mode; Linear Burn, Opacity 10%, Angle: 90°, Distance: 2. Size: 2.
- Drop Shadow, Blend Mode: soft light, Color: White, Opacity40%, Angle: 90°, Distance: 2, Size: 1
Add text
- Use Text tool to add text
- Set to white
- Change Blend Mode to Soft Light
Tip
- Add a rough edge:
- Add a layer mask
- Filter Menu: Brush Strokes, and then choose Sprayed Strokes. Setting 20 and 5.
- Create a new layer
- Using a black grunge brush add a design on top of your ticket.
- If it overflows outside of the ticket, turn your ticket into a selection and then add a Layer Mask to your grunge layer.
- Set opacity to 60% and Blend Mode to Soft Light
- 00:00 We're gonna rough it up a little bit: we're gonna give it some
- 00:03 style!
- 00:04 The first step to creating this ticket is to create the base shape, which is the
- 00:07 rectangle
- 00:08 In your tools bar on the left grab the standard Rectangle Tool.
- 00:12 Now up top on your options bar let's go ahead and set the color now so we won't
- 00:16 have to worry about later on.
- 00:18 A slightly de-saturated red should work quite well.
- 00:21 I'm gonna use B3 76 77 for the value. This color may not look that great but
- 00:28 it'll make sense later on. Now drag out the rectangle as
- 00:32 large as you want the ticket to be.
- 00:33 Once the rectangle been created, we need to punch out the notches on the side.
- 00:37 Because we're dealing with a vector shape we can easily subtracted from the
- 00:41 rectangle.
- 00:42 Grab your elipse Tool and then on the Options bar make sure that the subtract from
- 00:46 shape area button is active.
- 00:48 Once that's, set drag on a perfect circle by holding on your shift key
- 00:52 which covers a portion of the left edge of the ticket. The side of the notch is
- 00:56 completely up to you.
- 00:58 When the first circle is cut out to make things simple
- 01:01 we can duplicate using the path selection tool.
- 01:05 This tool can be found on the tools bar on the left.
- 01:06 With the tool selected, click on the ticket and then click on the newly
- 01:10 created circle.
- 01:11 Now just like you would duplicate a shape, hold on your alt or option key,
- 01:15 as well as your shift key, and then drag. Go ahead and do this until you're happy
- 01:20 with the amount of notches on the left side of the ticket.
- 01:23 You also want to add one on each corner as well: one on the top corner
- 01:27 and then one on the bottom. Good: the left side is complete.
- 01:31 Now Simply repeat the process on the right side.
- 01:34 Let's make it easy: with your shift key held down click on all the circles are
- 01:38 you just created.
- 01:39 It will temporarily group them together allowing us to hold down or alt or option
- 01:43 key again.
- 01:44 And then duplicate them over to the right side. Now depending on how the
- 01:48 corner circles were placed,
- 01:49 you may need to reposition the top and bottom circles. Simply click off of the
- 01:54 circles
- 01:54 and then select the top and bottom by using a shift key and then move them
- 01:58 into place.
- 01:59 Now have the shape for the ticket complete. Let's add some layer styles to give it
- 02:03 well some style. lLt's start with a pattern overlay to add a texture to our
- 02:07 ticket.
- 02:07 From the pattern picker, click on the arrow at the top right corner and then
- 02:11 select gray scale patterns to load them in.
- 02:14 If you get a popup window press append to add them to the bottom of the list.
- 02:18 When the new patterns are loaded find and select
- 02:21 the kraft paper pattern. It's a nice neutral grey pattern
- 02:24 And once that patterns been selected, change the blend mode to Color Burn
- 02:29 in order to blend it with that red color that we chose earlier.
- 02:33 Now lets add an inner glow to add a slight edge to our ticket.
- 02:37 start by changing the blend mode to soft light,
- 02:38 the opacity to 45 percent, and the color to appear white.
- 02:42 Now down below set the size at six and in the range at 10.
- 02:46 Finally let's add a drop shadow to pull the ticket away
- 02:51 from the backdrop.
- 02:52 Decrease the opacity to 30 percent, set the angle at 90 degrees,
- 02:58 and the distance and size at five. Looking much better.
- 03:03 Let's move on an and add an
- 03:04 indented outline to the inside of the ticket. Grab your rounded rectangle tool from
- 03:09 the Tools bar
- 03:10 and then set the corner radius on the Options bar to 5 pixels.
- 03:13 Before you create the shape make sure that the create new Shape Layer
- 03:18 option is selected on the Options bar so we don't add or subtract anything by
- 03:22 mistake.
- 03:22 Now drag out the shape in the middle of your ticket: as you drag you can hold
- 03:26 the spacebar to move the shape around before you place it.
- 03:29 Once its in place we want to punch a hole in the center of the shape
- 03:33 leaving only an outline. Back in your options bar at the top
- 03:37 select the subtract button again and then drag out and identical but smaller
- 03:42 shape on top of the one you just created.
- 03:44 When you release your mount you should be left with a nice simple outline.
- 03:47 Now let's add some layer styles to give it that indented look.
- 03:51 The first thing you want to do is decreased the Fill opacity to 0 percent.
- 03:56 This will allow us to see through the outline keeping the layer styles intact.
- 04:01 Now let's add an inner shadow, set the blend mode
- 04:04 to Linier Burn with an opacity of 10 percent.
- 04:08 Set the angle at 90 degrees and the distance and size both at 2.
- 04:13 Finally lets add a drop shot at a highly at the bottom of the indent.
- 04:17 Because we're looking for a highlight rather than a shadow change the blend
- 04:21 mode to soft light and the color to white.
- 04:22 You may also want to turn down the opacity to around 40
- 04:27 percent to blend it in a little bit.
- 04:30 Now make sure the angles at 90 degrees the distance at 2
- 04:34 and the size at 1. Now that these layer styles are complete,
- 04:37 let's throw in some text. White text with
- 04:42 the blend mode set to soft light should do the trick.
- 04:44 At this point, the clean version of this ticket is complete if you're happy with
- 04:47 the clean ticket it you can skip these next few steps.
- 04:50 But we're going to rough it up a little bit. Selecting the main ticket once again
- 04:54 go ahead and add a layer mask your layer.
- 04:57 Once a layer mask has been added head up to the filter menu,
- 05:00 down to brush strokes, and then choose sprayed strokes.
- 05:05 When the filter pops up, I found that 20, 5
- 05:08 and in Vertical works quite well, but experiment with the different values to
- 05:12 get the result you are looking for.
- 05:13 When you apply the filter, because was applied to the layer mask, its gonna
- 05:17 create a nice rough edge to your ticket.
- 05:18 The last step, which again is optional, would be to add some grunge
- 05:22 to your design.
- 05:24 Creating a new layer above all your current layers and using a black
- 05:27 grunge brush with you can download from the Internet there's thousands of them.
- 05:30 Add a design on top of your ticket If it overflows
- 05:33 outside the ticket, turn your ticket into a selection and then
- 05:37 add a layer mask your grunge laye. Set the blend mode to soft light
- 05:41 with an opacity of sixty percent and that will complete your design.
