Quick reference
Slide 1, Title Slide - Start with a Bang! - Part 2
We've created an awesome title slide background in Part 1 of this lesson. Now it's time to continue on and build a logo using shapes, add text and apply font and paragraph formatting.
When to use
Every presentation should contain a title slide so the audience or the reader understand the subject matter, the purpose or the goal.
Instructions
Using Shapes to Build a Company Logo
It's up to you what content to have on the title slide. Most of the time, you will want to include the company name and the logo. Maybe you already have a company logo saved in an image repository that you can download and use. If not, you can use shapes to build a simple logo.
- From the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click Shapes.
- Select a shape. In this example, I am using the triangle shape tool.
- Draw a triangle on the slide. Hold down the SHIFT key to maintain the aspect ratio.
- From the Shape Format tab, in the Shape Styles group, click Shape Fill.
- Choose No Fill from the menu.
- From the Shape Format tab, in the Shape Styles group, click Shape Outline.
- Choose Weight.
- Select 4.5 points.
- Select White Background 1 from the palette.
- Press CTRL+D to duplicate the shape.
- Use the rotation handle to rotate the shape 180 degrees.
- Resize and position the second triangle inside the first triangle.
- From the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click Shapes.
- Select a the oval shape.
- Draw a circle on the slide. Hold down the SHIFT key to maintain the aspect ratio.
- Repeat steps 4-9 to format the circle.
- Resize and position the circle inside the triangle.
Adding a Company Title and Tagline
- From the Insert tab, in the Text group, select Text box.
- Type the company name inside the text box placeholder.
- Select the placeholder or the text.
- From the Home tab, in the Font group, change the font to Lato Black.
- Change the font size to 66pts.
- Change the font color to Blue-Grey, Accent 2, Lighter 40%.
- Click the diagonal arrow in the corner of the Font group to open the Font dialog box.
- Click the Character Spacing tab.
- Change the spacing to Expanded by 20pts.
- Drag the placeholder handles so they are flush with the left and right margin (slide edge).
- From the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, select Center alignment.
- Postion the company name placeholder underneath the logo.
- From the Insert tab, in the Text group, select Text box.
- Type the tagline 'THE LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT COMPANY' inside the text box placeholder.
- Select the placeholder or the text.
- From the Home tab, in the Font group, change the font to Lato.
- Change the font size to 18pts.
- Change the font color to White, Background 1.
- Drag the placeholder handles so they are flush with the left and right margin (slide edge).
- From the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, select Center alignment.
- Postion the tagline placeholder underneath the company name.
Hints & tips
- To search for a specific font by name in the long list of fonts, simply start typing the name of the font to jump straight to it.
- To set a specific size for a font, type it into the font size field.
- 00:04 Hello everyone and welcome back to part 2 of this lesson,
- 00:07 we're going to pick up exactly where we left off in part 1.
- 00:10 Now the next thing to do is add my logo.
- 00:13 Now in the real world when you're doing this,
- 00:15 you're probably going to have your company logo saved off.
- 00:18 So it might be in the form of a PNG, GIF, JPG format.
- 00:22 And if you do have your logo saved off that way, then you can just insert it
- 00:26 in the same way that we inserted the previous picture from device.
- 00:30 I'm going to build a very simple logo just to show you a couple of other techniques.
- 00:35 And my logo is basically going to be three shapes combined together.
- 00:40 So back to shapes, and I'm going to select this triangle.
- 00:45 Now when you're drawing shapes, if I was just to draw the shape you can see I
- 00:49 can draw any kind of triangle I like.
- 00:52 Now I actually want to draw an equilateral triangle.
- 00:56 So the thing to do here is hold down the Shift key when you drag, and
- 01:01 it's going to maintain the aspect ratio.
- 01:04 And let's drag this triangle somewhere over into the middle.
- 01:08 Now I'm not going to talk to you about aligning things on the page as yet.
- 01:11 It is a very important topic and
- 01:13 we're going to have a whole lesson dedicated to that.
- 01:16 But you may notice that as I drag over,
- 01:18 you can see a dotted red line running down the middle.
- 01:21 That's telling me that that is centered.
- 01:23 So I'm going to drop it so much as that.
- 01:26 And I don't want any fill in the background.
- 01:28 I just want a white outline.
- 01:30 So using shape format, I'm going to say shape, fill, no fill.
- 01:35 Shape outline is going to be white, and I'm going to change
- 01:38 the thickness of that line by changing the weight to 4 and a half points.
- 01:43 Now I essentially want to draw another triangle inside, but
- 01:47 I want it to be upside down.
- 01:48 And the quickest way to do this is just to duplicate the shape, control D.
- 01:54 I can now use my rotation handle at the top of the shape to rotate this around.
- 01:59 And then I'm going to hold down shift and
- 02:01 pull these resize handles in to maintain that aspect ratio as I resize the shape.
- 02:06 And let's then move it inside this one.
- 02:09 I might have to dig around with this a little bit to get it looking exactly
- 02:13 as I want.
- 02:15 That is good enough for me.
- 02:17 The final shape I'm going to insert is just going to be a circle.
- 02:20 So again from basic shapes, select circle,
- 02:23 hold down Shift as you drag so that you don't get an oval.
- 02:27 And I'm going to do exactly the same thing here use shape fill,
- 02:31 I'm going to say no fill.
- 02:33 I want the outline to be white, and I want the weight of that outline to be 4 and
- 02:38 a half points.
- 02:40 Drag that over to my logo.
- 02:42 And we're just going to place that inside and do a little bit of resizing.
- 02:48 Like so, that is good enough for me a very very quick logo.
- 02:51 The final thing for me to do here is add in my company name and my tagline.
- 02:56 So for this I'm going to need a couple of text boxes.
- 03:00 So up to insert across to text box.
- 03:04 Let's draw a quick textbox, we can modify this later, and
- 03:07 enter in the name of the company.
- 03:10 So the company is called LANDCO.
- 03:13 Make sure we all clicked on that placeholder because we need to do some
- 03:17 font formatting.
- 03:18 So up on the Home tab in the font group, I'm going to select the font formatting
- 03:23 dropdown, and I want this text to be, let's do this pale blue color.
- 03:27 We're not particularly crazy about that font style.
- 03:30 So let's change that to my favorite font.
- 03:33 Which is lato black and notice that I'm typing into that box,
- 03:37 because that's going to run a search through all of those fonts for me,
- 03:41 which makes it a lot easier for me to select.
- 03:44 And then I'm going to change the size of this font to something pretty large,
- 03:48 let's change it to 66.
- 03:49 Now I want to position this in the middle underneath my logo.
- 03:54 Now a quick way of doing this is if you drag this text box all the way out on both
- 03:58 sides so that goes across the entire width.
- 04:01 If you then align the text within that text box,
- 04:04 you know it's going to be in the center.
- 04:06 So for this we're going to jump up to our paragraph options, and
- 04:09 I'm going to choose the center alignment tool.
- 04:12 Now that doesn't look bad but something does look a little bit off to me,
- 04:16 I'm finding that the character spacing is a bit too condensed for my liking.
- 04:20 I want to expand that out a little bit and have more space in between each character.
- 04:26 Then you'll find this option within your font dialog box.
- 04:29 So if you are a member quickly jump up to our font group and
- 04:32 click on this diagonal arrow in the bottom right hand corner, that's going to take us
- 04:37 into all of our font options that aren't necessarily contained on the ribbon.
- 04:41 I have a tab for character spacing.
- 04:44 I'm going to change this from normal to expanded and
- 04:47 I'm going to expand it by let's say 20 points and hit Enter.
- 04:53 And that is the kind of effect I was looking to achieve.
- 04:56 The final thing I'm going to do is just move this a little bit closer to my logo,
- 04:59 and I'm going to deal with the alignment a little bit later on.
- 05:02 The final thing here is just enter a subheading,
- 05:05 which is essentially just another text box.
- 05:08 So let's draw another one.
- 05:10 And this one's going to say,
- 05:19 THE LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT COMPANY.
- 05:22 Once again, select the placeholder and apply your font formatting options.
- 05:26 So I want this text to be white.
- 05:28 I want this to be lato, but I don't want it to be lato black,
- 05:33 I don't want it to be exactly the same weight as that heading.
- 05:37 So I'm going to choose the lato font.
- 05:39 It's within the same family.
- 05:41 So I know it's going to look quite nice.
- 05:44 I'm reasonably happy with that font size and again,
- 05:47 if I drag this text box all the way out, And then hit the center button.
- 05:52 I know that that is going to be exactly in the center.
- 05:56 And there we go, we've created a really effective looking title slide.
- 05:59 The final thing I'm going to do here is save the presentation.
- 06:02 And then we're going to head into the next lesson which is all about selecting,
- 06:07 aligning, and grouping objects on a slide.
