About this lesson
Defining the purpose of your meeting makes it relevant and interesting for everyone involved.
- 00:04 Let's get real here for a minute.
- 00:06 The coronavirus has changed life as we know it on this planet for
- 00:10 billions of human beings and for business as it's been conducted.
- 00:15 You may for the first time in your life be working from home, a home office or
- 00:20 just a home kitchen counter and having to conduct meetings.
- 00:25 Nobody likes this situation, but we have to make the best of it.
- 00:29 It's no longer a luxury.
- 00:30 It's no longer something you say only the high tech people do of
- 00:34 meeting online using video.
- 00:35 Now, everyone has to do it if they want to survive.
- 00:38 So dive into this course, let's get a lot out of it.
- 00:42 Ideally, we can have face to face real life meetings again soon.
- 00:47 But if not, let's figure out how to master this medium and continue with our work.
- 00:55 What is the purpose of your online meeting?
- 00:59 Sometimes it pays to actually write it down or
- 01:02 at least have it crystallized in your brain in one sentence.
- 01:07 The problem with some meetings, whether they're virtual or not,
- 01:10 is that they have no purpose.
- 01:11 People are getting together because they feel like, well,
- 01:14 we have to have a meeting.
- 01:16 You need to do everything you can to make sure everyone understands what
- 01:20 the purpose is of your meeting.
- 01:23 Because if people are confused, it's even easier for people to daydream or
- 01:27 get distracted in a virtual meeting.
- 01:30 Because if the camera's not on them, Twitter,
- 01:34 Facebook, blogs, all right here.
- 01:37 So that is the fundamental starting point for any meeting, whether it's virtual or
- 01:42 in person.
- 01:43 What is the clear cut purpose of the meeting and
- 01:46 what specific outcome are you looking for?
- 01:49 If you're pitching someone for a new business,
- 01:52 you're trying to convince them to hire you.
- 01:54 If you are talking to your other managers on a sales strategy,
- 01:59 you need buy-in on what the strategy is going to be.
- 02:02 Every single time you meet with someone and speak,
- 02:06 you should have some outcome in mind.
- 02:08 Now, it may just be to keep them apprised of the work you've been doing and your
- 02:13 section for the last quarter and letting them know that you're doing good work.
- 02:18 But there needs to be something specific and concrete.
- 02:22 Now, if you are a participant in the meeting and it's not yours,
- 02:26 try to focus on just one idea you really want to communicate and
- 02:31 what you want people to do with that.
- 02:33 So, that is the starting point.
- 02:36 The starting point is not, what camera should I use?
- 02:40 The starting point is not should I use makeup or not? The starting point for
- 02:43 an online meeting is the same place as any other meeting.
- 02:50 What is it that you hope to accomplish?
- 02:53 Really nail that down first before every meeting.
