About this lesson
Plenty of people don't want to turn on their camera, but video has so many advantages that will help you connect with your audience.
- 00:04 In this first big section here, I'm going to start off at a place that
- 00:08 most people don't start when it comes to courses and
- 00:11 videos teaching you how to video conference.
- 00:14 Most people start off with the tech side of things.
- 00:17 Well, here's what I know about you.
- 00:21 You're kind of like me,
- 00:22 in the sense that you're probably more worried about how do you not look stupid?
- 00:26 That's the human response.
- 00:28 So I want to give you solutions to real human needs.
- 00:32 That's what you're going to learn in this section.
- 00:35 All the dos and don'ts of how to really come across comfortable, confident,
- 00:40 relaxed, so you don't have to worry about it.
- 00:42 If you're nervous about how you look, if you're not confident that you're coming
- 00:47 across your best, none of the other stuff will matter.
- 00:50 Because that will mess up how you communicate.
- 00:52 So, you're in the right place if you're starting right here,
- 00:56 I'll walk you through all the steps.
- 00:58 Let's address something head on.
- 01:00 If you're a normal person, and I assume you are,
- 01:04 your first thought might be well, I don't want to be on camera.
- 01:09 I'll just speak behind the scenes and I'll put up slides the whole time.
- 01:14 No, no, no, don't do that.
- 01:17 It is so much less interesting to people.
- 01:19 It's boring, it makes you look cowardly.
- 01:23 And like you're afraid and you're practically begging people to
- 01:27 ignore you and check email and cell phones and Facebook.
- 01:31 So, you don't like the idea of your face on camera,
- 01:34 you want to just use your voice that's easier for you.
- 01:38 You don't want to have to shave or do your hair, cleanup.
- 01:41 I've got bad news for you.
- 01:42 Nobody cares what's easy for you, your boss, your clients, your customers.
- 01:47 They may like you but they don't really care about what's easier for you.
- 01:53 Every decision you make has to be looked at through the prism of,
- 01:58 is this helping the people I'm speaking to?
- 02:02 My clients, my customers, my colleagues, is it helping them?
- 02:06 And you not showing your face is not helping them,
- 02:10 that is you just not dealing with fear.
- 02:14 So do not try to just use voice.
- 02:15 All the major applications have systems where you can just call in on the phone.
- 02:22 And I know you're tempted to say, aah, you know, a bad internet connection today.
- 02:26 I couldn't join us on the video on the website, but I'm here by phone.
- 02:30 You can do that once or twice, but after a while people will see through that.
- 02:36 So you need to show your face.
- 02:38 Because the face is so much more expressive than the voice alone.
- 02:43 People will capture nuance, figure out what's important,
- 02:47 they will feel much more connected to you.
- 02:49 And they will listen so much more carefully if they can see you.
- 02:54 Now it's perfectly fine to put up slides for
- 02:58 portions of your presentation or to put up a graph or to share a website.
- 03:03 I'm not suggesting it has to be you the whole time.
- 03:07 But if you want people to listen to you and
- 03:10 to really focus on your most important points, you need them to see you.
- 03:15 So they could see why you think that is important.
- 03:19 So, yes, you do have to show your face if you really want to be seen as competent,
- 03:25 confident, and professional for your online meetings.
