About this lesson
Conducting a successful online meeting means devoting your bandwidth - and attention - to the task at hand.
- 00:04 A successful video conference requires a lot of bandwidth.
- 00:08 It just takes up a lot more space than sending text through the air.
- 00:12 You want the absolute best Internet connection you can find.
- 00:17 Now, back when you were at your office that might have been easy,
- 00:20 you may have had fantastic connections.
- 00:23 But if you're doing this video conference from home could be a different issue.
- 00:28 For starters, try to use a wired connection rather than WiFi,
- 00:33 if at all possible.
- 00:34 If there are other people at your home, watching movies, uploading downloading
- 00:39 images, video, have then stop it while you're trying to do your video conference.
- 00:45 The fewer things competing for your bandwidth, the better.
- 00:49 If you're going to be doing video conferences from home on a regular basis,
- 00:54 I'd recommend you upgrade to some package that's faster than the least
- 00:58 expensive consumer package.
- 01:01 You will need all the bandwidth you get if you're going to have successful
- 01:06 video conferencing from your home.
- 01:09 I'll never forget it, it was the first time I was on a production shoot and
- 01:14 a producer had a cell phone it was this big clunky thing.
- 01:17 It was around 1986 and I said, I gotta use that.
- 01:21 So what do I do?
- 01:22 I call my parents and say wow, you'll never guess it,
- 01:25 I'm talking to you from a cell phone.
- 01:27 I was so amazed at the technology.
- 01:31 Now, if you did that, be kind of weird, and boring to people.
- 01:36 Here's my point.
- 01:37 Don't talk about the technology, when you are doing a teleconference,
- 01:43 whether it's Zoom, Skype, WebEx.
- 01:46 Don't tell people, well, this is my first Webinar, my first Skype meeting,
- 01:51 my first Google Hangout.
- 01:53 Don't talk about the technology.
- 01:56 Frankly, no one else cares.
- 01:57 If you had to learn something new and learn a system and had problems,
- 02:01 hooking things up, don't waste people's time.
- 02:03 Don't talk about the technology.
- 02:06 Talk about the real purpose of your meeting.
- 02:09 Talk about something that's valuable to the other people who showed up for
- 02:14 the meeting.
- 02:14 Do that, and you can't go wrong.
