About this lesson
Be prepared to speak - and make a positive impression - no matter how much you might have to say.
- 00:04 Sometimes you'll be in an online meeting.
- 00:06 It's not your meeting.
- 00:07 You didn't call it, you're not calling things to order.
- 00:11 You're not the first presenter but you will still have to speak.
- 00:16 Maybe just to answer a question,
- 00:18 maybe to give a five minute update on what your section is doing.
- 00:22 But you still have to speak.
- 00:23 I want you to take this opportunity seriously.
- 00:26 Because when you're speaking, whether it's in real life or online,
- 00:31 people are watching you.
- 00:32 They are listening to you.
- 00:34 They're making judgments about you, your intelligence, your capabilities,
- 00:38 your long term prospects.
- 00:39 Every time you speak online, just like offline, you have a chance
- 00:44 to make a good impression, a bad impression, no impression, or
- 00:49 a great impression and actually communicate important ideas.
- 00:54 That's my goal for you.
- 00:57 So come prepared if you think that there's
- 01:00 a good chance that you might have to speak.
- 01:02 Because half the meetings you go to your boss says, hey,
- 01:05 give everyone a quick update on the Smither's project.
- 01:08 Then be prepared, practice it.
- 01:12 And realize that you don't want to waste time.
- 01:15 Just speak, deliver the ideas you have in this
- 01:20 interesting and engaging way as possible.
- 01:25 Also realize that even when you're not speaking,
- 01:28 the decorum in some platforms is to have a camera on everyone.
- 01:32 So people are still watching you.
- 01:34 So be careful playing with your face or scratching in different areas.
- 01:38 People are on you.
- 01:40 Also, critically important,
- 01:43 have your mute button on at all times unless you are speaking.
- 01:48 Sirens could be going, by kids could be running in and asking you questions.
- 01:53 At least with the sound off, you minimize the distractions.
- 01:58 But still take it seriously even if there's only a chance you're going to
- 02:03 be talking for two minutes in your next online meeting.
