Hints & tips
- Download Tableau: https://public.tableau.com/s/
- 00:00 Okay, in this video, we're going to download and install Tableau.
- 00:06 So this can be a little confusing to a lot of people,
- 00:08 because Tableau has a lot of different versions that are available.
- 00:11 Some are expensive, some are cheap, some are free.
- 00:13 There's trials, there's trials for the paid versions, there's trial for
- 00:17 the free versions.
- 00:18 It can be very confusing, and Tableau kind of goes out of their way,
- 00:22 it seems like, to hide the free version.
- 00:24 So I'm at the Tableau website, tableau.com.
- 00:27 And you can see right off the bat, it says, try now or buy now, and
- 00:30 we also see this Pricing link.
- 00:32 So if we click on this Pricing link, we could see Tableau Creator,
- 00:36 which is the main Tableau product, is $70 a month, right?
- 00:39 So this is really expensive, and it's not something that most people can afford,
- 00:44 unless you're working for a company that's going to pay for this for you.
- 00:49 But fortunately,
- 00:50 there is a free version, and that's what we're going to use in this course.
- 00:53 It's called Tableau Public, and you can see, there's also a Try Now.
- 00:58 If we click on this, you can get a 14-day free trial of the Tableau Creator that we
- 01:02 just looked at, you can enter your email address.
- 01:04 But again, that's not what we want.
- 01:06 So be careful to stay away from these things.
- 01:08 Instead, what we want to do is, if we head back over to the Tableau website,
- 01:12 we can click on Products.
- 01:13 And we can come down here until we see Tableau Public.
- 01:16 And when we click on it, we come to the Tableau Public page, and
- 01:20 this is what we want.
- 01:21 And if we kind of look through here, you could see, it may be a good idea to take
- 01:24 a look at this for a minute, kind of poke around in here.
- 01:27 There's all kinds of cool stuff, there's visualizations of the day,
- 01:30 there's a visualization gallery.
- 01:31 There's some free data that you can play with.
- 01:33 And so you spend a couple of minutes looking through here, and
- 01:36 sort of getting a feel for this.
- 01:38 It might be worth your time to spend a couple of minutes on it.
- 01:42 But what we want is, go to Tableau Public.
- 01:44 So if this has changed by the time you watch this video, if for instance,
- 01:49 going to tableau.com and clicking on Products.
- 01:52 If you don't see Tableau Public, another way to do this, to where you're almost
- 01:57 sure to be able to find it, is just go to Google and type in Tableau Public.
- 02:01 And you can see, Google finds it immediately,
- 02:05 Tableau Public, free data visualization.
- 02:08 And it comes straight to this same page that we're at here, right?
- 02:11 Which I got by, if we go back, going to the main menu, clicking on Products, and
- 02:15 going to Tableau Public, and then clicking on this to go to Tableau Public,
- 02:19 all right?
- 02:19 So same place, we all end up here.
- 02:23 So to download this, go ahead and enter your email address.
- 02:26 And I'm just going to do that, and click Download.
- 02:32 And we come to this page, and it should start automatically.
- 02:35 Now, we want to save this file, and it really doesn't matter where we save this.
- 02:38 So I've just navigated to my desktop here, and we click Save.
- 02:41 This is a fairly large file, if we click here, it is 371 megabytes.
- 02:46 I have super-fast Internet, so it downloaded pretty quickly.
- 02:49 But I'm on the Firefox web browser, so my downloads are right up here, right?
- 02:53 If you're using the Chrome web browser or some other web browser,
- 02:56 you'll often find your downloads down in the lower left-hand corner.
- 02:59 So whatever web browser you're using, click on either down here in the corner,
- 03:04 in the bottom left, or up here.
- 03:06 Click on this once it's finished downloading, And you see,
- 03:10 welcome to Tableau.
- 03:12 I've read the terms and all that good stuff.
- 03:14 And if you don't want them to send you email, you can click this.
- 03:18 I don't really care, so I'll just leave that.
- 03:19 We're not going to customize this,
- 03:20 we just want the basic installation that comes standard.
- 03:22 So I can click Install, and when we do, it starts to do its thing.
- 03:27 Just takes a couple of seconds usually to install, and we're good to go.
- 03:29 Now, it usually starts on its own after you've installed it.
- 03:35 But if it hasn't, let me just go ahead and close this out.
- 03:38 You can go over your Windows Start menu, click on here, and
- 03:41 just start to type in Tableau.
- 03:42 The icon pops up, you just click on it, and it should open right up.
- 03:45 So this is Tableau, we're going to talk about in a little bit exactly what we're
- 03:49 looking at here, and really get into it in detail.
- 03:52 But for now, we've gone ahead and downloaded and installed it successfully,
- 03:56 and it's pretty easy.
- 03:57 So in the next video, we're going to start to talk about data.
