Fitting To Width
In this lesson, you'll learn how to apply "Fit To Width" to Worksheets on a Dashboard.
When to use
Use this technique to help position things on your Dashboard.
Instructions
Click on any Sheet on your Dashboard. Click the caret in the right corner that appears. Choose "Fit" and then "Fit To Width" (or Height or Standard or Entire View).
Hints & tips
- Fit to Width stretches your Worksheet to the entire width of its Dashboard container.
- 00:05 All right, in this video, I want to talk about fitting to width and
- 00:07 I suppose height as well.
- 00:09 So let's come down here to our, my dog dashboard and let's right click and
- 00:13 let's just duplicate this.
- 00:15 So we create a second version.
- 00:17 Now we've got a pie chart here, we've got these graphs here.
- 00:23 Now if I grab this and kind of cycle through these using this guy over here,
- 00:27 you can see it kind of changes.
- 00:29 Now it's kind of smaller.
- 00:30 As we click on these, now this one's bigger, and maybe that's fine.
- 00:34 Maybe that's perfectly okay.
- 00:36 But maybe you want this data for instance,
- 00:38 this stuff right here to take the entire width no matter what.
- 00:42 So every time we cycle through this and change it, we still want it to maintain
- 00:47 its size in this whole little square area that we've defined right here.
- 00:52 How do we do that?
- 00:53 Well, really easy we can come up here and just click anywhere inside of this and you
- 00:56 can see the whole thing highlights, and then over here we get this little menu.
- 01:00 So we can click this little caret for more options, and we can get this fit.
- 01:03 So standard is standard.
- 01:05 There's also a fit width, fit height, and fit entire view.
- 01:07 So if we want this to stretch width wise, left to right, we can click fit width.
- 01:14 You can see boom, it sort of expands automatically.
- 01:19 Now, as we cycle through here, even though this is big,
- 01:21 it still is fit to the whole width.
- 01:22 Now this one, let's find another small one.
- 01:25 Even though this only has two items in it,
- 01:27 it still stretches out to fit to the entire width.
- 01:29 Now may be you want this, may be you don't.
- 01:30 There is arguments for both.
- 01:32 Visually, I would say, it's probably more pleasing, but standardization way.
- 01:40 If you're comparing this one to this guy, it's a little odd
- 01:43 because these columns are so gigantically wide versus these ones that are skinny.
- 01:48 So if that's an issue, you may not want to do this.
- 01:51 But if you do, very easy to do this.
- 01:53 Just go to fit.
- 01:55 Now if we want to change it back, we can click standard, and it goes back.
- 01:58 So this is interesting.
- 02:00 If we come up and click all, right?
- 02:01 We get this huge thing and the thing is so
- 02:04 big we need to scroll with this scroll bar down here.
- 02:07 And maybe you don't want that.
- 02:09 Well, we could do the same thing, we could go fit to width and
- 02:14 then it scrunches it all in.
- 02:16 Now obviously this is completely unreadable, but you may have a situation
- 02:20 where it's only slightly bigger and you want to kind of compress it.
- 02:24 Fit to width will do that.
- 02:26 So let's get rid of that and change that back to standard.
- 02:30 And there we go and we can pop down here and it goes back.
- 02:34 Now fit to width also works with height.
- 02:36 We can do the same thing with that.
- 02:38 We can go stamp we go fit it height, nothing really changes.
- 02:42 But for instance here are for our pie chart that might change.
- 02:45 So we came up here and went fit to height, you see it gets a little bigger, right?
- 02:50 The same thing here, we could go fit width and it pulls it and
- 02:54 sticks it right in the middle.
- 02:57 Well maybe that's what we want.
- 02:58 So that's kind of cool.
- 02:59 We can also do fit entire view and again makes it a little bit bigger.
- 03:03 So play around with this depending on the type of visualization you have,
- 03:08 you may or may not want to use this, but it's really sort of a handy way to,
- 03:12 by default, make a thing a certain way.
- 03:15 We can do the same thing for this one for instance.
- 03:16 This guy is only taking up what?
- 03:18 Maybe a third of the screen, a little more than a third of the screen.
- 03:22 You come over here, you can go fit to width.
- 03:23 Boom, that will pull it all the way over.
- 03:28 Maybe you like that better, maybe you don't, but that's a great option for you,
- 03:32 and you can play around with that.
- 03:34 So that's all for this video. In the next video,
- 03:35 we'll look at changing the font sizes and the colors of our dashboard.
