System Settings
We can change our system settings and set preferences for the way things work on our PC.
When to use
We change system settings whenever we want to optimize Windows 11 to work in the best and most efficient way for us.
Instructions
Open and Pin System Settings
To access System Settings:
- Click the Start button.
Most users will have Settings pinned here. If so, click Settings to open.
- If not, click All Apps.
- Scroll down to the S section OR type Settings into the search bar at the top.
Once we have found Settings, we can make our life easier by pinning it to the start menu so it's easy to access next time.
- Right-click on Settings.
- Click Pin to Start.
Settings
The Settings window is where we go to customize our copy of Windows 11. We can do many things in here such as change the theme, colors, set a desktop background, adjust keyboard and mouse options, adjust the resolution, change display options, set up new hardware, connect Bluetooth and printers and so much more.
Settings are organized into categories and each category has one or more subcategories. This makes it much easier to find the setting we are looking for.
As we move through different subcategories, we can return to the main page by clicking on the breadcrumb trail at the top of the window to go back.
Some settings have menu drop-downs and some have toggle buttons. It's definitely worth going through each category, checking the settings, and modifying accordingly.
Login to download- 00:04 In Windows 11, we can easily change our system settings, and set things up so
- 00:08 they work in a way that's most productive for us.
- 00:12 And we briefly jumped into settings a little bit earlier on in the course,
- 00:16 but let's take a look at it in more detail.
- 00:18 Now the first thing I'm going to do here is I'm going to press the Windows logo key
- 00:22 on my keyboard just to pop open that start menu.
- 00:25 Now what you might find is that under your pinned applications.
- 00:28 And again yours might look a little bit different to mine,
- 00:31 you might have Settings in there.
- 00:32 If you can't see it in this pinned area, remember click on All Apps.
- 00:36 To show a big long list of all of your applications on your PC organized
- 00:41 alphabetically, we can then scroll down to S.
- 00:44 Or alternatively we could just type settings into the search bar at the top,
- 00:48 in order to find the one that we're looking for.
- 00:50 Now another thing that you could do if settings or any other application that
- 00:54 you're searching for, is something that you use all the time.
- 00:58 It can be a lot more beneficial to pin the application to your taskbar.
- 01:02 What that means is you're going to see it as an icon down in the taskbar like many
- 01:06 of these others that we already have.
- 01:08 And that makes it really quick and simple, to dive into the application.
- 01:12 Because it means you don't have to keep coming into the start Menu mach time.
- 01:15 So we're going to be using Settings quite a bit, so
- 01:18 I'm going to pin it to my taskbar.
- 01:20 So let's scroll through to the S section, and there I can see Settings.
- 01:24 Now if I right-click my mouse, I get a small contextual menu,
- 01:29 the first option here is to Unpin from Start.
- 01:32 So that's worth noting we can pin applications to the start menu, or
- 01:36 we can pin them to the taskbar.
- 01:38 And if we pin to the start menu the application is going to appear,
- 01:41 in that pinned list at the top.
- 01:43 Now I already have Settings in that list in my start menu,
- 01:47 which is why I'm only getting the option to Unpin it from Start.
- 01:51 If I was to go to something like the Snipping Tool and right click,
- 01:54 you can see the option I get is Pin to Start.
- 01:57 Now what about pinning to the taskbar?
- 01:59 Well if we right click again for this I need to go to More, and
- 02:03 then I have the option to Pin to the Taskbar.
- 02:06 So I'm going to do that to make it really simple.
- 02:08 So now, when I click away, you can see in the taskbar I now have settings there,
- 02:13 so when I want to access it, I can simply click it once.
- 02:17 So the Settings window is where we go to customize our copy of Windows 11.
- 02:22 And there are so many settings in here it can be a little bit overwhelming.
- 02:26 But I would highly recommend just taking some time before you really get going
- 02:30 using Windows 11.
- 02:32 To go through each of the categories and
- 02:34 make sure everything is set up in the way that you like to work.
- 02:38 Now we are going to be diving in and out of here throughout the course.
- 02:41 As we get to different sections I'm going to show you where you can come to
- 02:45 adjust certain settings.
- 02:46 But a quick run through of what we have so
- 02:48 you get a general idea as to where you can find things.
- 02:51 So if we go to System, this is where you're going to find all of the most
- 02:54 common things you might want to customize.
- 02:56 For example, we can make changes to our display,
- 02:59 we can make changes to our display.
- 03:01 So adjust things like the monitor that we're using and
- 03:05 the brightness, we can adjust our sound and even add other devices.
- 03:09 We can modify our notifications,
- 03:11 we can use something called Focus Assists which I'll talk about later.
- 03:15 And we also have things like our Power and Battery options in here as well.
- 03:19 We have a section for Bluetooth and Devices.
- 03:22 So if you have any Bluetooth devices connected,
- 03:24 this is where you would come to set those up, and also manage them.
- 03:28 Anything related to our Internet connection we're going to find under
- 03:32 Network & internet, so things like our WiFi.
- 03:34 And the Personalization area is really where we come for
- 03:37 all of that fun stuff changing things like our desktop wallpaper.
- 03:40 The theme we're using, the different colors that we're using.
- 03:44 And of course Apps is where we come to find a full list of all our apps.
- 03:49 And this is also where we can do things like uninstall certain apps on our PC.
- 03:53 Our Accounts is where we can go to manage our account information,
- 03:57 create new accounts, and add new users.
- 03:59 This is also where we find our sign in options.
- 04:02 So if you want to do things like, change the way you sign in from using a password
- 04:06 to a pin, this is where you would come to set that up.
- 04:09 You can also do things like change your password from in here as well,
- 04:13 Time & Language settings.
- 04:14 Again definitely make sure you're using the correct timezone, and
- 04:18 also the correct language for your region.
- 04:20 We have a Gaming section so I'm not much of a gamer so
- 04:23 I never really come into this section.
- 04:25 But if you are, this is where you can come to adjust those settings.
- 04:29 We have an accessibility area so this is where we can make
- 04:32 things a little bit more accessible to people who are maybe visually impaired.
- 04:37 For example we can do things like make the text size bigger.
- 04:41 We can turn on the magnifying glass which we can hover over different parts
- 04:44 of our screen to really make that text large.
- 04:47 We can change the color filters that we're using and change our contrast themes.
- 04:51 Next, we have Privacy & Security, pretty much what it says on the tin.
- 04:55 If you want to take a look at your security settings,
- 04:57 this is where you can come.
- 04:59 And then finally at the bottom, we have Windows Update.
- 05:02 So Windows is constantly being updated,
- 05:06 particularly newer versions like Windows 11.
- 05:09 So if we have any updates that have been automatically deployed to our PC,
- 05:13 this is where we can come to check for updates.
- 05:15 And also where we can download and install any new updates to the system.
- 05:20 So that's a very brief run through as I said we are going to be diving in and
- 05:24 out of here a lot.
- 05:25 Then the other thing to really know about these settings area if we click back
- 05:29 on System.
- 05:29 Is that when we start going through these different menus if I click on Sound,
- 05:33 just remember you get this little breadcrumb trail at the top.
- 05:36 So if you need to go back then you can I can go back to Systems simply by clicking
- 05:40 on it, and we also have a back arrow at the top here.
- 05:43 So if we're a bit too far through our menus, we can click on back,
- 05:46 to go back to where we were.
- 05:48 Also notice with some of these, what you'll find is that we can change some of
- 05:53 our settings using drop down menus.
- 05:55 And some are going to have these little slider toggles.
- 05:59 Now if we go back to something like Notifications,
- 06:02 you can see we have a lot of slider toggles in here.
- 06:06 This is simply to turn certain functionality off or on on our PC.
- 06:11 So you might have a drop down menu in here, you might have a slider toggle, but
- 06:15 that's pretty much it when it comes to settings.
- 06:17 Let's click on the cross in the top right hand corner to close that down because we
- 06:22 are ready to move on to the next lesson.
