Quick reference
Use Sticky Notes
Use the Sticky Notes app to create notes, ink, and add text and images.
When to use
We use Sticky Notes whenever we want to create virtual notes to store snippets of important information and stick them to the desktop.
Instructions
Sticky Notes are a simple way to quickly save information for later. Like virtual Post-It Notes, we can create notes, type, ink, or add a picture and text formatting. Sticky Notes can be stuck to the desktop and we can move them around freely, edit them, close them, add them to the notes list and sync them across devices and apps like OneNote.
Open Sticky Notes
- Click the Start button or press the Win key.
- Scroll to 'S' or type Sticky Notes into the search bar.
Create a Note
A new sticky note will open. We can type in any important notes or snippets of information. Sticky Notes in Windows 11 can be formatted using the menu underneath the note.
- Type a note.
If the Sticky Notes app is already open, we can click the + symbol to create a new note.
Format a Note
- Highlight the note text.
- Use the icons underneath the note to apply formatting.
We can make the text bold or italic, we can apply an underline and a strikethrough. We can even create bulleted lists within the note and add an image.
Notes List
When we close a Sticky Note it gets saved to the Notes List. The Notes list shows all notes we've created. We can view the note, delete the note or go back in and edit the note.
Edit the Note
- Click the three dots in the corner of the note.
- Click Open note.
- Make the required changes.
- Click the X to close the note.
Delete the Note
- Click the three dots in the corner of the note.
- Click Delete note.
Change the Note Color
- Click the three dots in the corner of the note.
- Choose a Note color from the palette.
Hints & tips
- Use the search bar at the top to search for notes using keywords.
- 00:04 Sticky Notes are another small but useful application in Windows 11 that
- 00:08 allow us to create virtual post-it notes to store important information.
- 00:13 Now, one caveat to this is the Sticky Notes app is effectively like sticking
- 00:18 a post-it note on your screen.
- 00:21 So we would definitely recommend that you don't store anything that's too
- 00:24 sensitive on these sticky notes,
- 00:25 so that anybody who's walking past behind you can see the information.
- 00:29 So don't use Sticky Notes to store things like passwords, or
- 00:32 maybe the security number for the office door.
- 00:35 But for some pieces of information, things you need to remember,
- 00:38 they can be really useful.
- 00:40 And it is a very simple and straightforward application, so
- 00:43 let's take a quick look.
- 00:45 Once again,
- 00:45 we're going to press the Windows logo key to pop up that Start Menu.
- 00:50 We're going to go to All apps, and I'm just going to search for Sticky Notes,
- 00:55 and there it is at the top of the list.
- 00:58 Let's click once to launch the application.
- 01:00 And once again, if this is the first time you're using it,
- 01:03 you're going to be required to log in.
- 01:05 Now, we get this kind of Sticky Notes list just here, as well as a new note.
- 01:10 And notice I can drag this sticky note and
- 01:12 place it wherever I want to place it on the screen.
- 01:15 So this looks like a virtual post-it note.
- 01:18 We can resize it by dragging the corner to make it bigger or even make it smaller.
- 01:22 And we can have multiple notes on our screen.
- 01:25 So, maybe I want to remember a customer order number that I was recently given.
- 01:30 So, I'm going to type in customer order number, and let's just say it's that.
- 01:35 Once I'm happy with the sticky note, I can do a few things with it.
- 01:39 Now notice when I create this sticky note, it adds it to my sticky notes list.
- 01:44 So all of the notes that you create you'll see in this list, and
- 01:47 you can then use the search bar at the top to search for specific notes.
- 01:51 So if I click in search and type in Amazon,
- 01:53 it's going to find any sticky notes that have the word Amazon in them.
- 01:58 Click on the cross to clear that search.
- 02:01 If I want to close down my note,
- 02:03 I can simply click the cross in the top corner of the note.
- 02:06 And it's telling me that closed notes are available at any time in the list view.
- 02:11 So okay, I've got that.
- 02:13 If I want to reopen that note, I can simply double click on it again.
- 02:19 And I can also double-click on any of these other notes that I have in my list.
- 02:23 Now, a couple of other things that you can do with sticky notes, notice just below,
- 02:27 we actually have a formatting ribbon.
- 02:29 Now, this is a very basic formatting ribbon.
- 02:31 But it does allow us to add a little bit of structure to our sticky notes.
- 02:34 I can make things bold.
- 02:36 I can make things italic and underlined.
- 02:39 I can even put a strike through across if I want to.
- 02:41 And if I want to create bulleted lists,
- 02:44 I can do that as well simply by clicking the correct icon.
- 02:48 So let's just add in some random text.
- 02:52 I can even add in an image.
- 02:54 So if I click the Add Image button, it's going to open up the last folder I used,
- 02:59 and let's just choose one of these images of Turkey to add to the sticky note.
- 03:04 So these can be quite nice for storing important snippets of information.
- 03:09 Now another thing we can do, if we click the three dots up here,
- 03:12 is we can change the color of our sticky note.
- 03:15 So I'm going to make this one pink just to differentiate it from the other notes in
- 03:19 my list.
- 03:20 I can also pull up my notes list from here, and I can delete the note as well.
- 03:24 So I can really have this sticky notes list as a little floating window,
- 03:29 and I can place that down the side of my screen if I want to use these regularly.
- 03:33 So I can drag it down to make it a bit longer,
- 03:35 and I have full access to all of the notes that I've created.
- 03:39 We do have some settings for sticky notes as well, so notice at the top we
- 03:43 have a little cog icon, so that's going to jump us into our Sticky Note settings.
- 03:47 Now, we don't have a great deal of settings we can customize in here, but
- 03:51 we can, for example, make sure that we have this toggled on.
- 03:55 So we're going to get a confirmation before we delete the notes.
- 03:58 So it gives us just that second to really think about if we do want to delete
- 04:02 this or not.
- 04:03 We can change the color from light to dark.
- 04:05 So, remember as I said, all of the Windows native applications are completely
- 04:10 customizable, and you can choose light or dark for each of them.
- 04:14 So if I change this to dark, I get a completely different look and feel.
- 04:18 So let's go back to our notes list and
- 04:20 you can see that dark setting has been applied.
- 04:23 The only other button that we have in Sticky Notes is the plus in
- 04:27 the top corner, and this will enable us to create a brand new note.
- 04:30 So it really is as simple as that.
- 04:33 I can even carry on clicking on that plus to create multiple notes at the same time
- 04:37 and maybe work across all of them.
- 04:39 And if I don't want them,
- 04:41 I can simply click the cross in the top corner to get rid of those notes.
- 04:45 But that's it, that is Sticky Notes,
- 04:48 use them whenever you want to store snippets of important information.
