About this lesson
Learn how to incorporate movement to look natural while speaking in public.
-
00:05
When it comes to body language one and business, one of the trickiest areas for
-
00:09
many people is when they're giving a speech, a presentation.
-
00:14
And I'll define that as anytime you're talking to more than one or
-
00:17
two people about something business related, especially if you're standing.
-
00:21
Now, most people get uncomfortable.
-
00:24
When there's a certain audience size bigger then what they're used to,
-
00:28
and that's when their body language changes.
-
00:31
Before I tell you what not to do, I wanna focus on the positives,
-
00:36
because I find that's what really helps people the most.
-
00:39
I wanna give you the positive role model.
-
00:41
The main thing you have to worry about and focus on
-
00:45
when it comes to your body language when you're speaking, is you've got to move.
-
00:50
You have to not become that little bunny rabbit that's spotted and freezes and
-
00:54
thinks, I'll protect myself if nobody notices me here.
-
00:59
Because unfortunately, that's what happens to speakers.
-
01:01
You need to move.
-
01:03
You need to move your head, you need to move your hands,
-
01:06
you need to move your face, your eyebrows need to move, your body needs to move and
-
01:11
yes, you actually need to move around the stage or the floor.
-
01:17
When you are speaking in front of people, and you have a stage or
-
01:22
a floor and you're not confined because you're sitting down or behind a lectern.
-
01:28
Confident speakers move.
-
01:31
When you think back to our first homework exercise and
-
01:34
you looked at some of the best speakers.
-
01:37
I don't know if you looked at Zig Ziglar or Anthony Robbins or
-
01:42
Ronald Reagan in certain debate situations but the best speakers in the world,
-
01:46
it doesn't matter what their politics or
-
01:48
what their industry is, when they are on the stage, they're moving.
-
01:55
And that is the number one key.
-
01:57
I can give you 1,001 other specifics but if you move, and
-
02:01
the movement seems purposeful and it doesn't seem robotic or
-
02:06
like a grandfather clock, the movement will make you look natural.
-
02:11
It will make you look comfortable.
-
02:13
But just make sure occasionally
-
02:18
freeze like I'm doing now, to emphasize certain points.
-
02:24
Wanna make a really important point?
-
02:26
Stop.
-
02:27
Don't move your feet.
-
02:29
Freeze your body for a second.
-
02:31
Make the point.
-
02:32
And then to be conversational,
-
02:34
you can move around again but movement is your key.
-
02:38
It's the number one thing nervous people don't do.
-
02:43
Everything is frozen except their lips are moving and noting else.
-
02:46
And it's boring to watch, it's boring to listen to.
-
02:52
So that's your next big homework assignment.
-
02:55
I need you to stand up, speak, record yourself and
-
03:00
I want you to watch it without any audio.
-
03:06
And if what you see is this.
-
03:11
That's trouble.
-
03:13
That means something isn't working.
-
03:16
So that's our first goal.
-
03:18
I need you to get to the point where you're moving your hands,
-
03:22
your body, and even your feet when you aren't
-
03:27
constrained by having to stand right behind a lectern or sitting in a chair.
-
03:32
Movement is key.
-
03:36
So focus on that right now.
