About this lesson
Practicing on video is usually more effective than vocal exercises or other techniques.
- 00:05 You may have noticed in this course I haven't
- 00:08 spent a lot of time talking about, speak from the diaphragm and
- 00:13 put your tone at the top part of the back of your teeth and go.
- 00:18 I'm not knocking some of those techniques,
- 00:21 I've just found for most people most of the time,
- 00:25 they don't help much because they simply don't stick, it's not repeatable.
- 00:30 The main thing I advocate, that does help that I find is repeatable,
- 00:35 that makes a substantial change, is practicing on video and audio.
- 00:41 Really listening to yourself getting comfortable with how you're
- 00:45 coming across having that mental image, that memory of how your voice is.
- 00:50 And that is what is going to give you the confidence to sound confident and
- 00:54 not let the nerves trip you up to cause all these problems I've talked about.
- 00:58 If you want to try the other solutions breathing exercises, diaphragm exercises,
- 01:05 different positionings with your tongue, be my guest.
- 01:12 And as I mentioned to you before,
- 01:14 if you really have a severe speech impediment or other neurological problems,
- 01:20 then I would advise you to consult with a speech pathologist, speech therapist.
- 01:26 But if you have the garden variety problem of just not liking your voice
- 01:30 because you sound scared, nervous, uncomfortable, blah blah blah,
- 01:35 the exercises in this course will solve your problems.
- 01:39 Congratulations, we're at the end of the course together,
- 01:42 I hope you've gotten something out of this.
- 01:45 To summarize, I think there's an excellent chance you don't have some horrible voice,
- 01:51 you simply have to use the voice you already have more effectively.
- 01:55 And to train your voice, to not imitate me or
- 01:59 Ronald Reagan or some other famous actor, but
- 02:02 to train your voice to sound like you do when you're comfortable and relaxed.
- 02:08 All of us when we're talking to friends family about issues we're passionate
- 02:13 about, tend to use the full range of our voice.
- 02:15 Our speeds change, our volumes change, that's what makes us interesting.
- 02:21 That's what makes us sound confident.
- 02:23 If you could sound confident and relaxed, and use your voice in the way you do
- 02:29 when you are confident and relaxed, your voice is going to be a net asset to you.
- 02:34 And it's not going to be a problem at all.
- 02:37 Let's face it, the bigger problem for most people is not their voice,
- 02:41 it's what they say, and that's the subject of a different course.
- 02:45 I'm TJ Walker, good luck with all your presentations in life.
