About this lesson
Here's a quick way to eliminate verbal tics right now.
- 00:04 I want to go ahead and give you a quick win, because your time is valuable.
- 00:09 And I want to save you time, so we can solve this problem.
- 00:13 Here's a technique I use to get rid of ahs and ums and
- 00:16 ors on my clients all over the world.
- 00:18 Presidents of countries, billionaire fund managers,
- 00:22 even Nobel Peace Prize winners have this problem of the verbal tics.
- 00:26 Here's what I want you to do, go to your computer and
- 00:31 type up whatever word it is you use: uhh, umm, err, you know, like, you see.
- 00:38 Whatever it is, that word, that sound, that phrase type it up in small and
- 00:44 medium size font and then print this out on a piece of paper.
- 00:50 Next I want you to get a red magic marker, I know this sounds silly.
- 00:55 You're scratching your head, why did I get this course, it really does work.
- 01:00 You put a red circle around the word and a slash through it.
- 01:04 The International red no sign.
- 01:06 Just like no left hand turn, no parking.
- 01:10 Now it's no umm, no uhh, no err, so then what you do is you cut it out,
- 01:16 and then you just tape it to your cell phone,
- 01:20 to your watch if you wear a watch, to your computer screen, to your iPad.
- 01:27 Anything you look at daily, now don't put it on your hand or
- 01:30 your forehead that's not going to help.
- 01:33 Something you look at,
- 01:35 here's what happens after a day when you say that verbal tic that that.
- 01:41 You're still aware of it, but
- 01:43 you have this sort of the Homer Simpson moment, you're aware of it.
- 01:48 Because if you're like most people, you're looking at your watch or
- 01:52 your cell phone dozens if not hundreds of times a day.
- 01:55 So you start to get this image of the no sign around that phrase.
- 02:01 After two or three days, when you start to say the uhh or the umm, the image comes up.
- 02:07 You almost catch it but it still comes out of your mouth.
- 02:13 But here's the thing after about a week,
- 02:16 when your brain is thinking about feeling that sound,
- 02:21 that empty space with the uhh, the umm, the err, you know,
- 02:26 the image pops up and you can simply hold it in and pause.
- 02:31 This way you'll sound more comfortable, confident and relaxed.
- 02:37 Try the technique it really does work.
- 02:41 So why do people say uhh, umm, err, you know.
- 02:47 A lot of times in my experience people only do it when they're feeling
- 02:51 uncomfortable, when they're giving a speech, a presentation,
- 02:54 doing a media interview, leaving a voicemail.
- 02:57 Something that takes them out of their normal conversational mode.
- 03:00 And what's happening is they're self conscious.
- 03:03 And they're thinking, everybody's looking at me.
- 03:07 How do I fill up this empty space?
- 03:09 I don't want it to be an awkward silence.
- 03:12 That's when people do it, it's important to realize,
- 03:16 you don't have to fill up the sound you can simply pause.
- 03:21 This course is going to give you even more techniques of how to do it.
- 03:24 It sounds easy when I say it, but
- 03:27 I want to give you a lot more practical tips to solve this problem.
