About this lesson
Keep the focus on your questions on the applicant's experience and fit for the job, and avoid anything personal or inappropriate.
- 00:04 So I've given you examples of certain questions you could ask, should ask,
- 00:08 what are questions you shouldn't ask?
- 00:11 Now, I'm going to toss some out here, and some of you could say, well,
- 00:14 that's obvious.
- 00:15 That's common sense.
- 00:15 No one would do that.
- 00:17 Believe me, people have asked the questions I'm about to put forth.
- 00:22 Questions like, will you go out on a date with me?
- 00:26 Obviously you don't want to say anything that seems like you're hitting on
- 00:29 this person.
- 00:30 This person's putting their entire livelihood prospects in front of you,
- 00:36 wildly inappropriate.
- 00:38 You don't want to ask if the person is single.
- 00:42 If they're married and have a husband or wife, because perhaps they are in a same
- 00:46 sex marriage and they don't think that's any of your business.
- 00:51 You can't ask if someone has ever had an abortion.
- 00:54 I realize it sounds ridiculous for me to even mention that, but
- 00:58 it has happened in job interviews.
- 01:00 You're best off avoiding politics, you don't want to give someone a context for
- 01:06 saying that you weren't hiring them because of political discrimination.
- 01:12 Anything you would say to someone when you're meeting them at a singles
- 01:17 bar in a social setting is in general a good thing not to say in a job interview.
- 01:24 It's not enough to say use common sense,
- 01:27 because a lot of people don't have common sense.
- 01:30 Steer away from politics, steer away from anything of a sexual nature.
- 01:37 And steer away from really anything that doesn't somehow give
- 01:42 you a sense of what this person is about when it comes to their work,
- 01:47 their work habits, their career interest.
- 01:51 Let them do the talking and see what comes up.
- 01:55 You can certainly make judgments.
- 01:57 But the interview shouldn't be dictated by wild inappropriate questions
- 02:02 at least in the perception of the interviewee questions from you.
