About this lesson
Share your video rehearsal to get helpful advice from coworkers regarding questions and your overall interview approach.
- 00:04 Now, this next tip isn't for everyone.
- 00:07 It may be seen as overkill for you and your organization.
- 00:11 But it's still not a bad idea.
- 00:12 What I'm suggesting is, take that last video you did, ideally one where it's not
- 00:17 just your opening two minutes, but where you're doing a mock interview.
- 00:21 And you're asking all the standard questions that you want to ask in
- 00:25 an interview.
- 00:26 Take that video, send it to other colleagues in your office and
- 00:31 send it to your boss.
- 00:33 Send it to the HR department if you're not in HR and ask for feedback.
- 00:39 If they tell you, hey, that question's going to get us in legal trouble,
- 00:43 that's going to get us in hot water, well, now you know, don't ask the question.
- 00:48 Your colleagues may have some very specific questions that they'd like to
- 00:51 recommend to you that you hadn't thought of.
- 00:53 So it's a way of improving your interview and your interview skills, and
- 00:58 also for large organizations, for government.
- 01:01 And I've worked for government organizations and large organizations, so
- 01:04 I don't mean anything negative about this.
- 01:06 But in large organizations, if you are worried about protecting
- 01:12 yourself from lawsuits from applicants who didn't get the job,
- 01:17 it's nice to have a video record demonstrating how you treated applicants.
- 01:23 And that you in fact did have a set process that was vetted in advance,
- 01:28 and your bosses approved it.
- 01:30 So it gives you some political cover as well.
- 01:33 And just email the video.
- 01:37 You can email it to them through Gmail, Google Drive, Dropbox.
- 01:43 You can upload it to a private YouTube channel.
- 01:45 It's very easy to send videos to colleagues these days.
- 01:51 Now, you may think that because I'm recommending video record critique
- 01:56 that I would recommend video recording the actual job interviews.
- 02:01 At this point, I'm not quite comfortable doing that because too many job applicants
- 02:05 would not be comfortable with that.
- 02:08 I want them to feel comfortable when they're coming to your organization.
- 02:11 I don't want them to feel like they're really under a microscope,
- 02:15 and they're part of some reality TV show or something.
- 02:17 So I actually don't recommend video recording your actual job interview,
- 02:22 and I certainly don't recommend secretly recording them.
- 02:27 That's a problem for a whole host of reasons.
- 02:30 But I do want you to send your best recording to your colleagues.
- 02:35 Ask them for feedback, ask them for any other questions that they want you to ask.
- 02:40 And ask them if there's anything that they'd like you to not talk about,
- 02:45 that they might see in this video.
