Funnel Charts
Create and Format a Funnel Chart in Excel.
When to use
We use a funnel chart when we want to represent the stages in a process showing the flow and drop-off data at each stage.
Instructions
A funnel chart is a type of chart that is used to show the flow or steps in a process, where the values typically decrease progressively. This chart is shaped like a funnel and is useful for visualizing stages in a process, such as sales pipelines, conversion rates, or other processes with sequential stages.
Key Features of a Funnel Chart:
- Stages: Each section of the funnel represents a stage in the process.
- Values: The width of each section represents the value at that stage, usually decreasing as you move down the funnel.
- Proportional: The size of each section is proportional to its value, making it easy to compare stages.
- Flow Visualization: It visually depicts the reduction in values as items move through stages, highlighting areas of loss or drop-off.
Why Funnel Charts Are Useful:
- Identifying Bottlenecks: Easily identify stages where there is a significant drop-off or bottleneck.
- Visualizing Process Flow: Clearly show the progression through stages in a linear process.
- Performance Tracking: Track the performance of each stage, making it useful for sales and marketing funnels, recruitment processes, etc.
- Simplification: Simplifies complex data into an easy-to-understand visual representation.
Create a Funnel Chart
In this example, we are going to create a funnel chart to show the key stages of a sales pipeline process.
- Go to the Insert tab on the Ribbon.
- In the Charts group, look for the Funnel chart icon. This is typically found in the Insert Waterfall, Funnel, Stock, Surface, or Radar Chart drop-down menu.
- Click on the Funnel chart icon to insert the chart.
Customize Your Chart
- Chart Title: Click on the chart title area to add a descriptive title.
- Data Labels: Add or modify data labels to display the values on the chart by clicking on a data point and selecting Add Data Labels.
- Colors and Styles: Customize the colors and styles of the funnel sections by right-clicking on them and selecting Format Data Series.
- Additional Elements: You can add or remove gridlines, legends, and other chart elements as needed.
Example Use Cases for Funnel Charts:
- Sales Funnel: Visualize the stages of a sales process from leads to closed sales, showing drop-off rates at each stage.
- Marketing Campaigns: Track the stages of a marketing campaign from awareness to conversion.
- Recruitment Process: Show the stages of a hiring process from applications received to candidates hired.
- Customer Journey: Illustrate the stages of a customer journey from initial contact to final purchase.
Hints & tips
- The newer chart types in Excel have fewer customization options than older chart types.
