Quick reference
Create a Pivot Chart
Create a Pivot Chart based on Pivot Table data.
When to use
We use a Pivot Table with a Pivot Chart whenever we want a flexible way to visualize aggregated data.
Instructions
Pivot Tables are the number 1 utility in Excel for analyzing data. Pivot Tables differ from static Excel tables in that they can be changed and 'pivoted' to display data in different ways. We use Pivot Charts to create charts when our data is in a Pivot Table.
In this example, we are starting from an existing Pivot Table report. The report shows the profit by country for all products.
Create a Pivot Chart
- Click in the Pivot Table data.
- From the Insert tab, in the Charts group, click PivotChart.
- Click on All Charts and choose Column.
- Click on Clustered Column and click OK.
A Pivot Chart is virtually the same as a static chart except that it will update when the Pivot Table report changes.
Format a Pivot Chart
Hide Labels
By default, a Pivot Chart will display field labels on the chart. These are used to filter the chart, however, we can also filter the chart using the Pivot Table so these are a little unnecessary.
- Right-click on the chart.
- Select Hide All Field Buttons on Chart.
From this point, we can use the same formatting options to style up our Pivot Chart as we would a regular static chart. We can add a chart title, add axis titles, remove gridlines, change the width of the bars, change the chart style, or format the bars.
Hints & tips
- Press the CTRL+1 keyboard shortcut to access formatting options.
