Quick reference
Filter Pivot Chart Data with Slicers
Use Slicers to filter Pivot Chart data.
When to use
We use Slicers to filter our data whenever we want a visual, user-friendly way of filtering data in a workbook or dashboard.
Instructions
Insert a Slicer
Slicers are visual filters. We use them to filter data in Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts and we can customize the format of our slicers so they match the workbook.
- Click on a chart.
- From the PivotChart Analyze tab, in the Filters group, click Slicer.
- Choose Month Name from the list.
A floating pane displaying the values from the column will appear.
Format Slicers
We can now format the slicer so it matches the dashboard. All formatting options are on the Slicer tab.
Change the layout
We can change the layout of the slicer by adjusting the columns.
- Click on the slicer.
- From the Slicer tab, in the Buttons group, change the Columns value to 12.
- Use the resize handles to adjust the slicer so all months are displayed clearly.
Change the Slicer Style
We can change the look and feel of the slicer by changing the slicer style.
- Click on the Slicer.
- From the Slicer Styles group, click the drop-down and choose a Slicer Style.
Alternatively, you could create your own custom Slicer Style by duplicating an existing style and then modifying it.
Remove Header
We can make our slicer look cleaner by removing the header.
- Click on the Slicer.
- From the Slicer tab, click Slicer Settings.
- Deselect the Display header check box.
Hints & tips
- If we remove the header from the slicer, we also remove the ability to quickly clear the slicer. A workaround is to right-click and choose Clear Filter from the right-click menu.
