Adding our Secondary Text
Incorporating the secondary text into the logo lockup.
When to use
After combining our primary text with the logo we can now introduce our secondary text.
Instructions
- Begin by opening the Adding our Secondary Text - Exercise.ai file
- Select the main nose/mouth shape and increase the stroke around the shape to 10 pt to create a bolder line
- Now that we have a thicker line we will need to tap some of the other shapes that are close to the edges inwards to give them a bit of breathing space
- Select the Ragin text and go to the Object Menu and choose 'Ungroup'
- Select the white Ragin text on top and lock it by going to the Object Menu and choosing Lock > Selection
- Now when you click where the white Ragin text is you should be selecting the outline shape just behind it
- With this shape selected, use the Eyedropper Tool (I) to sample some of the main orange color so that you now have an orange border around the white text
- Select the Ragin text again and unlock it by going to the Object Menu and choosing 'Unlock All' from the menu
- Click and drag around the Ragin text and make a copy of the Ragin text by pressing Command/Ctrl+C
- Create a New Layer on top of your Layers Palette
- Press Command/Ctrl+F to paste a copy of the Ragin text on top
- Move this copy over onto your first artboard and scale it down by dragging inwards from any of the four corners of the bounding box around the shape while holding the Shift Key
- Experiment with the placement of the secondary text and perhaps rotate it slightly clockwise as well
- Select the extruded or blended dark orange shape behind the white and mid tone orange colors and delete it
- Select the orange outline shape with your regular Selection Tool (V) and go to the Object Menu before choosing Path > Offset Path
- Make sure that the preview box is checked off and add a value of about 8 px before pressing 'OK' to apply the changes
- With the offset shape still selected, grab your Eyedropper Tool and sample the dark orange shadow color
- Open the Pathfinder Tool and choose the Merge option to make this into a solid shape
- We may have lost the orange stroke around the dot above the 'i' in our Ragin text, and if this happens just use your Direct Selection Tool (A) to select the white text on top, lock it by pressing Command/Ctrl+2 and then clicking again until you have that outline shape selected. You may not see the shape but it should be filled with the mid tone orange color. From here you simply need to bring it forward by pressing Command/Ctrl+] on the keyboard until it reappears.
- Once you have fixed that, go to the Object Menu and choose 'Unlock All'
- Make sure that all of your secondary text is grouped by clicking and dragging around it and then pressing Command/Ctrl+G
- Continue to experiment with the size and placement of the secondary text until you are happy with it
- Select the grouped text and press Command/Ctrl+C to make a copy of it, and then press Command/Ctrl+F to paste a copy in front
- Open the Pathfinder Tool and choose the Merge option and then Unite it to make it a solid white shape
- Press Command/Ctrl+Shift+[ to send this shape to the back
- Use the Eyedropper Tool to sample the tan highlight color and then click and drag the fill to the stroke
- Bring up the Stroke Panel and increase the weight of the outline to 25 pt
- Click on your main Ragin text shape and lock it so that you can select the tan fill and stroke behind it
- With your tan fill and stroke still selected, cut it by pressing Command/Ctrl+X on the keyboard
- Create a New Layer just above your BG Layer and then press Command/Ctrl+F to paste the tan copy back in
- Go to the Object Menu and choose 'Expand' and then click OK with the Fill and Stroke boxes both checked off
- Bring up the Pathfinder Tool and then choose 'Merge'
- Return to the Object Menu and choose 'Unlock All' and then zoom in and fix any stray points like we did when we integrated our primary Bulls text with the logo
- If there are any weird gaps where you are seeing the tan color through the 'R' or 'A' in the Ragin text, simply draw on top of them and fill them with the dark orange color and then select the shapes and merge them together with the Pathfinder Tool
Hints & tips
- If you have multiple copies of a shape and you are having trouble selecting one of the shapes in back because it is covered, lock the shape on top by pressing Command/Ctrl+2 and then you can select the next shape behind it.
- Remember after offsetting shapes or adding a stroke to expand the shape so that it doesn't get messed up if we resize the logo.

- 00:04 So at this point, we're starting to assemble our logo, and
- 00:07 we wanna start looking at how we can incorporate our secondary text.
- 00:11 Before I do that, I'm just gonna select this mouth shape here, and
- 00:14 I was thinking about increasing the stroke maybe back to 10.
- 00:18 And just moving in some of these other shapes here,
- 00:20 a little bit away from the edge.
- 00:23 But I think that having a slightly heavier line will actually be easier to see.
- 00:26 Because you wanna remember that your logo isn’t always going to be seen at full size
- 00:31 like we’re looking at it now.
- 00:33 There will be times when your logo may be small, and
- 00:36 in those cases, you wanna make sure that you can still see all of the lines.
- 00:40 So let's just go head and modify this shape a little bit so
- 00:44 it fits nicely in here and everything is spaced out.
- 00:48 Okay, and it's pretty easy for us to grab our shapes at this point, which is one of
- 00:52 the main reasons why I wanted to keep everything separate from the beginning.
- 00:56 All right, so now we can take our ragin text, and
- 00:58 we're actually going to ungroup it, so come up to Object and choose Ungroup.
- 01:05 And I wanna select the white and now lock that,
- 01:08 by going to Object > Lock Selection, or pressing Cmd+2.
- 01:13 And click on the shape just behind it, which is going to be this outline.
- 01:17 Now for this, let's go ahead and maybe sample some of this orange color.
- 01:21 Now originally, I was thinking that this could look pretty good kind of overlapping
- 01:26 the text somewhere.
- 01:27 So let's unlock it, once again, select all these shapes together, and group it,
- 01:32 since we've just modified the colors, and now we can try to place it on top.
- 01:37 But again we have to actually make a copy of it by pressing Cmd+C, bringing up
- 01:42 our layers palette, and making sure that it's in front of everything else.
- 01:47 So I'm gonna create a new layer on top and press Cmd+F.
- 01:50 And now I can just drag this copy on top and maybe scale it down a bit like that.
- 01:57 Okay, now I may rotate a little bit and
- 01:59 just experiment with the placement a little bit more.
- 02:02 Now, originally as you can see,
- 02:04 we kind of did the blend in order to create this offset look.
- 02:08 So I'm wondering if now we may wanna go back in and
- 02:12 kind of have this red stroke be even all the way around.
- 02:16 So I'm actually going to select this red shape in back and delete it.
- 02:20 All right, now select the orange shape, come up to Object > Path > Offset Path,
- 02:26 and let's check off preview for a second.
- 02:29 And maybe add a value of around 8 pixels.
- 02:32 All right, we can hit OK to see how that looks, and now let's just sample
- 02:37 some of this red color, open our pathfinder, and merge it together.
- 02:42 Okay, now that looks pretty good, and it looks like we just
- 02:47 need that orange stroke around the dot on the top of the i,
- 02:52 wanna make sure that all that is filled with orange by bringing that forward.
- 03:00 Okay, so this is looking pretty cool,
- 03:02 now I can come back up to Object > Unlock All, and there we go.
- 03:06 All right, so I'm gonna select all those shapes and
- 03:10 group them together, and zoom out for a second and take a look.
- 03:15 And once again, maybe scale this down a little bit so
- 03:17 it doesn't cover up too much of our logo.
- 03:20 Maybe tap it down a few clicks until we get a placement that we're happy with.
- 03:26 All right, you don't want it to be covering too much of the logo.
- 03:30 But it's kind of just about finding a nice happy medium here.
- 03:35 I think somewhere around there looks pretty cool.
- 03:38 Now the last thing we're going to do is select our whole text shape here
- 03:42 for ragin.
- 03:42 Press Cmd+C, Cmd+F to paste it in front,
- 03:47 merge it, and then choose unite.
- 03:50 And now we'll send it to the back once again by pressing Cmd+Shift+[.
- 03:55 Now use your eyedropper tool and sample this tan highlight color in
- 03:59 the background, and click and drag the fill to the stroke color.
- 04:03 Now in order to see it, we're going to have to increase the stroke so
- 04:08 that it matches the stroke on the rest of our shape.
- 04:11 Now, at the moment, it's cutting into too much of our logo here and
- 04:15 it's a little bit intrusive, so we wanna dial it back a bit.
- 04:19 So I'm gonna select the main text in the front and lock it so that I can select
- 04:23 the tan shape behind it, and then I'm going to cut it by pressing Cmd+X.
- 04:29 Now, I'll open up my layers palette again, and
- 04:31 I wanna make sure that this in the back.
- 04:33 So I'm gonna create a new layer above the BG layer, and
- 04:37 then press Cmd+F to paste it in front.
- 04:39 And now that tan line back here is no longer intruding into the front of
- 04:44 the shape, but it's only coming out from one side.
- 04:48 So that's more like what we're looking for.
- 04:50 All right, now I can select it once again, and maybe decrease the line a little bit.
- 04:57 Somewhere around 25 I think looks pretty good on this.
- 05:01 Then let's come to Objects and hit Expand, and as long as Fill and
- 05:04 Stroke are checked off, just hit OK.
- 05:06 And we will bring up our pathfinder to once again merge that together.
- 05:12 Now from here it's just a matter of kind of coming in, and
- 05:14 closing up any of these gaps that we saw earlier.
- 05:17 So that we can just try and clean up our shape a little bit more.
- 05:21 So let's unlock it, and just grab this point here on the bottom of the red.
- 05:26 And we're just gonna fill in some of this area here by deleting a few
- 05:31 of these points.
- 05:37 And if you need to, again, use your pen tool and
- 05:39 just draw in a shape on top of it.
- 05:40 And then we can merge it all together.
- 05:48 Now we can select all of that, just tap it over a couple of times,
- 05:53 so it's within our shape here, within our bounding box.
- 05:59 But I think our logo is looking really good, and
- 06:01 I'm just wondering if there's a few more spots where we may just wanna cover it up
- 06:06 with this red color to fill in some of these gaps here.
- 06:09 Let's just see how this looks really quick,
- 06:13 and this is when the details count, is coming in here.
- 06:17 So, we're gonna select these shapes that we just created.
- 06:23 Select my ragin text once again, and merge it one more time.
- 06:28 So at this point,
- 06:29 we've looked at integrating our text along with out main logo illustration.
- 06:34 And I'm just cleaning up a few of these points here.
- 06:38 And then I'll bring up my layers palette, unlock the BG layer, and
- 06:42 just tap that over a little bit, so that it fills up the entire art board.
- 06:51 And there we go, guys, now we've got our text in place, our primary and
- 06:55 secondary text, and we're looking pretty good.
