Topic
Applying a transition from one slide to the next.
When to use
This lesson will help you to know what options are available for creating cinematic-quality transitions from slide to slide.
Instructions
The only requirement for adding a slide transition is that you have to have more than one slide.
To add a new slide:
- click the “Add a Slide” on the toolbar
- browse the available slide designs
- click to add a slide
To add a slide transition:
- select the slide that we will be transitioning away from
- click on “Animate” on the toolbar
- click on the blue “Add an Effect” on the formatting pane
Note: before committing to a transition, we can click the “Preview” link to preview the transition.
We can change properties of our transition on the formatting pane after we added the transition.
Transition properties that we can adjust include:
- duration
- “Start transition”
- transition delay
To change our current transition, we click on the “Change” button on the formatting pane.
Login to download- 00:00 In the last lesson we learned all about builds and actions which is
- 00:05 how we defined how objects enter and exit a slide as well as what we
- 00:10 can do to attract the audience's attention once they're on the slide.
- 00:16 In this lesson we will learn how to apply a cinematic quality transition that will
- 00:20 take us from one slide to the next.
- 00:23 The only requirement for
- 00:24 using slide transitions is that we have more than one slide in our slide deck.
- 00:29 I know, I know, hopefully this is obvious but it just had to be said.
- 00:34 To add a new slide to our slide deck,
- 00:36 we click the add slide button on the left side of our tool bar.
- 00:39 Next, we choose the type of slide to add.
- 00:42 As we do this, you will notice multiple slide types to choose from.
- 00:46 These are defined by the one who designed the slide theme.
- 00:49 In this case, Apple designed this theme.
- 00:51 In a later lesson, we'll walk through how to design our own themes.
- 00:56 Now that we have added a second slide, let's look at options for
- 00:58 adding a transition from one slide to the next.
- 01:01 Before we choose a transition type,
- 01:03 we first need to make sure that we're on the correct slide.
- 01:06 When we add a transition, we are applying that transition between the slide that is
- 01:10 currently selected and the next slide in the list.
- 01:13 In this example I have slide one selected.
- 01:16 If I were to apply a slide transition here, it will define what the animation
- 01:21 looks like when transitioning from slide one into slide two.
- 01:25 I wanna make sure you understand this concept because in other tools,
- 01:28 the transition is applied to the slide before the one that is currently selected.
- 01:34 To add a transition,
- 01:35 we'll click on the animate tab on the right side of our tool bar.
- 01:38 Then the blue add an effect button.
- 01:40 This will reveal a list of possible transitions to choose from.
- 01:44 Before we commit to a single transition it might be a good idea to preview several
- 01:48 options first to get a feel for what they might look like.
- 01:51 This can be done by clicking the preview link to the right of
- 01:54 each transition style.
- 01:57 When we have found the transition style that we want to use we commit
- 02:00 that style by clicking the name.
- 02:02 In this example we will choose the doorway effect.
- 02:06 Now that we have settled on a transition type,
- 02:09 lets look at how we can customize this.
- 02:11 As you would expect in viewing other lessons in this course,
- 02:14 the type of changes that you can make to this effect is based on the type of effect
- 02:17 that you choose to apply.
- 02:19 This particular effect allows us to change the duration of the transition,
- 02:23 as well as the timing.
- 02:24 If we want to lengthen the duration of the transition,
- 02:27 we simply drag the slider to the right.
- 02:29 If we want to transition from slide to slide manually,
- 02:32 we would leave the Start Transition set to On Click.
- 02:36 If we wanted to automate the timing of the transition,
- 02:39 we could change the start transition to Automatically.
- 02:42 With it set to automatic, we can now define how much time
- 02:45 passes before the slide automatically transitions to the next slide.
- 02:50 For example, we could set it to four seconds.
- 02:53 To see what this looks like, we can use the Preview button above.
- 02:58 Using transitions can help you to tell your story and
- 03:00 add necessary emphasis where it needs to be added.
- 03:04 Here's one quick example of what I mean.
- 03:06 In this example I want to transition into a slide that contains a full-screen video.
- 03:11 To help introduce this video, I may choose to transition into the video slide using
- 03:15 the Color Panes transition effect.
- 03:18 Simple yet very effective.
- 03:21 As with other lessons, I highly recommend taking time right now to explore and
- 03:24 browse some, if not all, of the transition effects that Keynote offers.
- 03:29 Who knows, you may just stumble the very transition effect you've been looking for
- 03:34 that will help you to really wow your audience at your upcoming presentation.
