Attack the Challenge Together
Anything worth having in business and life comes with challenges. You will learn how to overcome challenges and the strategies to overcome them. The first step for overcoming the challenge is to assess where you are. The second step is attacking the challenge together.
When to use
Whenever you are trying to overcome challenges you must come together with your team to attack the challenge together.
Instructions
Coming together with your team, employees and staff to overcome the challenge together is a key strategy. This is the collaborative style of leadership. Regardless of your leadership style, in these situations you want to come together and collaborate. Your team will help you overcome your challenges.
- Make it ok for your team to fail.
- There is no success without failure.
- When you look at the companies that are at the top of their game, they have failed multiple times.
- You will have ups and downs and you need to learn from your failures.
- If you don’t make it ok for your team to fail, it will stifle their creativity and your team won’t take risks.
- Allow your team to contribute so they can take ownership of overcoming that challenge.
- This will get your team motivated.
- Your team can come up with solutions that you may not have even thought of.
- Don’t point blame.
- Make everyone responsible for successes or for failures.
Example: In 2001, the corporate parties came to a stand still. As an owner of an event planning company, this was a challenge. Our team came together and we decided to change our strategy. We took the same clients and started doing high end weddings. So, when the corporate parties eventually came back we had doubled our revenue.
Login to download- 00:04 In this video we're going to talk about attacking the challenge together.
- 00:09 Coming together with your team, coming together with your employees,
- 00:12 coming together with your staff, okay?
- 00:15 And overcoming the challenge together.
- 00:17 Now again, this is that collaborative style of leadership.
- 00:21 Regardless if you're authoritative or you're exemplary dominant, right?
- 00:26 In these situations you want to come together collaborative,
- 00:29 because if you've got the A players, we're gonna talk about in future videos.
- 00:34 They're going to help you overcome these challenges, okay?
- 00:38 So the first thing is you want to make it okay for your team to fail, what?
- 00:44 Did you just say fail?
- 00:47 Yes, because here's what I tell my clients.
- 00:49 There is no success without failure.
- 00:54 It's so important, I'm gonna say it again.
- 00:55 There is no success without failure.
- 01:00 When you look at the companies that are at the top of their game right now, right?
- 01:04 A lot of times we think the graph looks like this,
- 01:06 it just goes straight up, right?
- 01:08 In reality, when somebody gets to this level, it looks like this, okay?
- 01:13 There's ups and downs, and these downs are those failures.
- 01:17 And what's great about that is you can learn from your failure,
- 01:20 course correct, right?
- 01:21 Like we talked about in the last video, and
- 01:23 keep moving towards your target, towards your goal.
- 01:25 Make sense?
- 01:27 Okay, so if you don't make it okay for
- 01:29 your team to fail, it's gonna stifle their creativity, right?
- 01:33 Because when we go to school, think about this.
- 01:35 In our 20th century, going to school, they teach us that hey,
- 01:39 you gotta be right, we're gonna grade you on your grades.
- 01:42 You got a A, or a B, C, D, F, whatever it is, right?
- 01:46 So we've been trained, like hey, we can't fail, we can't fail.
- 01:49 And if you have that mindset you're not gonna take risks, and
- 01:53 if you don't take risk you're not gonna innovate.
- 01:56 And if you don't innovate, your company's going to go bye-bye, okay?
- 02:00 So you have to make it okay for your team to fail.
- 02:04 Now your team can come up with solutions that you may not have even thought of,
- 02:09 right?
- 02:09 You've got this dream and this vision,
- 02:11 and they may have some solutions to help get you to that dream or vision quicker.
- 02:16 So that's why collaborative style leadership is so important to inject here.
- 02:20 And next, you wanna allow your team to contribute so
- 02:24 that they take ownership of overcoming that challenge.
- 02:27 Because when you get your team to take ownership of overcoming the challenge,
- 02:31 that's when they're gonna work late on their own.
- 02:33 They're gonna come to work early to start attacking this challenge.
- 02:37 This is when they're gonna really start thinking about it and
- 02:39 coming outside of the box to overcome it.
- 02:43 You want them to take ownership, okay?
- 02:46 Now this next one is a big one, don't point blame.
- 02:50 Don't point the blame.
- 02:51 Make everyone responsible for success.
- 02:54 Or make everyone responsible for the failure in overcoming the challenge.
- 02:59 When you have this team mentality,
- 03:01 now you guys are gonna be able to go further together, okay?
- 03:05 So I'll give you an example in my own business.
- 03:08 In 2001 after 9/11, the corporate parties came to a stand still, and
- 03:12 I had a special events company, and a lot of my clients were corporate clients.
- 03:18 So event companies that had been in business for
- 03:20 years were going out of business left and right.
- 03:23 And so we were in Beverly Hills, we had all the studios.
- 03:26 The studio stopped doing parties cuz nobody was really in the mood for
- 03:31 a corporate party after that had happened, right?
- 03:34 So my team and I,
- 03:35 we focused on getting together and what can we do to overcome this.
- 03:40 How can we attack this challenge together?
- 03:42 And what we came up with was if you remember back to 2001,
- 03:46 people were really starting to come together.
- 03:50 Remember that?
- 03:51 And people who had been dating for a while started to get married.
- 03:55 And people started to realized how much they loved each other and
- 03:58 wanted to come together.
- 03:59 So we said hey, you know what?
- 04:00 Why don't we take these same clients and start doing high-end weddings and
- 04:04 private parties.
- 04:06 And that's what we did.
- 04:07 And we built a whole another segment to our
- 04:10 business that we didn't even have before.
- 04:12 So when the corporate events did come back,
- 04:14 and eventually they did, we had instantly doubled our business.
- 04:19 So what appeared negative in the beginning was a huge win for our business.
- 04:24 And I'm so glad that I brought in that collaborative style of leadership
- 04:28 where we can get these ideas and
- 04:29 start thinking out of the box in some things we never thought of before.
- 04:33 Sound good?
- 04:33 Okay, good.
- 04:34 So remember, just to recap, collaborative style of leadership,
- 04:38 regardless if you're authoritarian or not, make it okay for your team to fail.
- 04:43 There is no success without failure and
- 04:46 your team can come up with solutions you didn't even think of.
- 04:49 And allow your team to contribute so
- 04:51 they take ownership of overcoming that challenge.
- 04:55 And don't point blame, make everyone responsible for the failures and
- 04:59 make everyone responsible for the successes.
- 05:01 All right, you guys got this and we'll see you in the next video.
