Split and Merge Note Containers
This lesson will show how to split a container into two separate containers, and also how to merge two containers into one.
When to use
Sometimes a container has too much text, and it makes more sense to break into two separate containers, while sometimes two containers have similar information and need to be merged into one.
Instructions
To split a container:
- Click on the Insert Menu
- Click on the Insert Space icon on the left side of the Insert Menu
- Move your mouse in the middle of a container
- Drag your mouse down
- Everything below your mouse just became a different container
To Merge containers:
- Move your mouse to top of a container
- Hold down the Shift Key on your keyboard
- Drag that container towards another container
- The two containers are now merged

- 00:04 Let's see how we can merge containers together and also split a container.
- 00:09 So you see how I have Phil's phone number here and Dave's phone number and
- 00:14 they're really in separate containers at this time.
- 00:18 Well, they kind of go together, right?
- 00:20 They're both phone numbers, so watch what I'm going to do.
- 00:24 I'm going to move my mouse to the container that says Dave, and
- 00:28 I'm going to hold down my Shift key.
- 00:30 I'm going to hold down my Shift key, okay?
- 00:33 Then I'm going to drag it into the other container, and
- 00:37 now we just merged those together.
- 00:41 Let me undo that so I can do that again.
- 00:43 Of course, Undo is up here.
- 00:45 Okay, so I'm going to move my mouse to the one that says Dave and
- 00:48 actually move my mouse to the top container here.
- 00:51 And then I'll hold down the Shift key on my keyboard.
- 00:55 I'm going to hold it down.
- 00:56 Then that allows me to drag it and then when it approaches that other container,
- 01:01 they're just merged together.
- 01:03 I'm going to lift my fingers now, and now the two containers have been merged.
- 01:08 That's a pretty good one to know about.
- 01:10 On the other hand, let's see how we can split a container.
- 01:13 So let's come over here and
- 01:16 let's say I wanted New Jersey to be kind of by itself,
- 01:21 and the rest of the states to be separated from that.
- 01:26 So right now, they're all in the same container as we can see.
- 01:31 So this time, I'll use the Insert menu and
- 01:34 we're going to use that Insert Space icon that we used in the previous lesson.
- 01:38 So I'll pick on Insert Space.
- 01:40 Now, watch, you're going to get that line, right?
- 01:44 And I'm going to move that line right in the middle of this container and
- 01:48 then click there.
- 01:52 And actually, I'm just going to drag it down and look what happened.
- 01:56 So this container got split and so
- 01:59 did this one because of where that line was positioned, so let me undo that again.
- 02:06 So I'll move this container out of the way.
- 02:08 So let's say I don't want this to be split.
- 02:11 I'll move this container out of the way.
- 02:13 And then watch how I'm going to split this one again.
- 02:16 I'll pick on Insert Space.
- 02:18 You get that line.
- 02:20 So I'll move my mouse where I want the split to occur.
- 02:24 I'm going to hold down my left mouse button and just drag it down.
- 02:30 And you can see how now this is one container and
- 02:33 this is another container so I was able to split that pretty easily.
- 02:38 Well, let's merge them back together again.
- 02:40 Remember what I showed you at the beginning of this lesson.
- 02:42 I'm going to move my mouse to the top of that container,
- 02:46 hold down my Shift key, move it back up to this container.
- 02:50 And as soon as it is part of that container, it merges automatically and
- 02:55 now they're back together again.
- 02:57 So now you can see how to split and how to merge the containers.
