Quick reference
Link to Word or PowerPoint
This lesson shows you how to include a Word document or a PowerPoint document into a page on OneNote.
When to use
This is a very handy way to include an existing document into your OneNote note.
Instructions
- Go into the Quick Notes notebook
- Click on the Insert Menu
- Click on the File Attachment icon on the Insert Menu
- Browse to either a Word document or a PowerPoint document on your computer
- On the next window, click on Attach file
- You should now see a new icon on your page - if you double-click that icon, it will open the document
Hints & tips
- If you choose Insert Printout after you choose the file, it will actually insert the text from the document into OneNote, rather than just the icon
- 00:04 In this video, I want to show you how to link to a Word document or
- 00:07 a PowerPoint document.
- 00:09 Let's go back to our Quick Notes.
- 00:12 And I'm going to make another new page.
- 00:16 I'll just call this one Links to Word.
- 00:20 So I'm going to come over here and we'll pick on the Insert menu, and
- 00:24 we'll pick on File Attachment.
- 00:30 So at this time, I'm going to go ahead and pick a Word document.
- 00:35 So I can really link to any kind of file, but in this case,
- 00:39 we'll use a Word document.
- 00:44 So I'll even choose the labels here, and I'll pick on Insert.
- 00:51 I can attach the file.
- 00:54 Let's see what that one looks like.
- 00:56 And then you see the document there.
- 00:59 So then if I double-click on that document, then it'll bring me right
- 01:04 into the Word document as you can see, all right, and then I can change it.
- 01:09 I'm actually in the Word document at this time.
- 01:12 I'm going to close that, and close out of Word again.
- 01:17 Let's try the other example.
- 01:19 So I'll pick on a File Attachment and I'll use that same file.
- 01:23 I'll use the labels again, and I'll pick on Insert.
- 01:27 This time, let's try Insert Printout and see what that one does for us.
- 01:34 Now it's going to run through this, in this particular case I'll pick on Yes.
- 01:46 Now if I go back into OneNote, let's see what it gave us that time.
- 01:50 See how it actually put the text from that Word document into OneNote
- 01:55 instead of putting in the link that we did here?
- 01:58 So that was kind of an interesting one.
- 02:02 That was the file printout.
- 02:04 This time, let's try a link to a PowerPoint presentation.
- 02:08 So I'm going to add another new page here, I'll pick on Add a Page,
- 02:13 and I'll call this one Links to PowerPoint.
- 02:17 And I'm going to go ahead and pick on File Attachment again.
- 02:21 And this time I'll point to a PowerPoint presentation,
- 02:25 all right, there's one, and I'll pick on Insert.
- 02:29 So you can use any PowerPoint presentation that's going to be on your computer.
- 02:33 I'll pick on Attach File, now, when we do it this way, it'll add the link that way.
- 02:38 So I'm going to double-click on that icon, and
- 02:41 that'll bring me directly in the PowerPoint.
- 02:44 So now we're in PowerPoint and we can edit that file.
- 02:48 Let's close that PowerPoint, and now I'm back into OneNote.
- 02:53 Let's try the other way.
- 02:55 So I'll pick on File Attachment, and I'll use that same file again, all right?
- 03:01 So you're just going to use a PowerPoint presentation from your computer.
- 03:04 I'll pick on that one, pick on Insert.
- 03:08 Let's try it this other way, where it says Insert Printout.
- 03:14 You can see it's going through that just like it is on mine,
- 03:19 and now see how all the text from that PowerPoint is in OneNote.
- 03:25 So you can either get the whole text, that was the file printout, or
- 03:29 if you just get the file itself then you get this icon.
- 03:32 And when you double-click on that icon, then it would go into the PowerPoint or
- 03:37 into the Word document.
- 03:38 So now we can see how we can link our OneNote into
- 03:43 either PowerPoint or Microsoft Word.
