About this lesson
A comparison of the Outlook interface when using the desktop version vs the Office.com version (which is constantly changing). Note: This course is based on the Desktop version.
Quick reference
Outlook Desktop vs Office.com
Outlook 365 Desktop version has more bells and whistles, more versatility, and is more constant in the user interface.
When to use
For this course, we will demonstrate the Desktop Version, not the Office.com online version which is constantly updated and changed.
Instructions
Follow along with the video lesson and you will see there are variations between the two versions of Outlook, including:
- The available ribbons across the top
- The menu icons across the left-hand side
- The availability of the QAT (Quick Access Toolbar)
- 00:04 Hello and welcome to the Microsoft Outlook 365 desktop
- 00:09 app that we will be using during this video series.
- 00:13 Now, I want to explain to you just very quickly why
- 00:16 we're using the desktop app rather than the online app.
- 00:19 Now, I'll go ahead and click on that so you can see what it looks like.
- 00:25 Here we go, now, there's some basic differences.
- 00:28 First of all, let me set them side by side.
- 00:33 On the left hand side is the desktop app, notice,
- 00:36 on the top left hand corner, is the traditional office Outlook icon.
- 00:41 Over on the right hand side, we do have that same icon, but it's below the name
- 00:46 of the program Outlook, and it's right down here, the Outlook icon.
- 00:51 On the top left, we also have a quick short little QAT Quick Access Toolbar,
- 00:57 the search box, our profile button, and our minimize, max, and close.
- 01:04 On the right, we have art the title of the program we're in,
- 01:08 we don't have a QAT Quick Access Toolbar.
- 01:12 We do have a search box right here, and we do have our profile bubble.
- 01:18 The next difference on the left are the ribbons available?
- 01:21 We have File, Home, Send/Receive, Folder, View, and Help,
- 01:26 but on the right we only have Home, View, and Help.
- 01:30 But the major difference, the one that I recognize every single time is
- 01:34 on the left-hand side, I have a short little navigation panel with
- 01:38 a waffle at the bottom, giving me more options and other programs.
- 01:43 But on the right hand side,
- 01:45 this navigation panel has most of those showing.
- 01:48 We have our mail, and our calendar, people, files, and
- 01:51 then we have the apps already stacked out here, the To Do, the Word, the Excel,
- 01:55 and then we have the waffle.
- 01:59 So the reason we're not going to use the one on the right hand side is because
- 02:02 of the constant updating that they push through on a regular basis.
- 02:06 Whereas on the left hand side, the Outlook desktop app,
- 02:09 because it's downloaded to your PC, it has more bells and whistles, more versatility,
- 02:15 and it's more constant, it doesn't change as quickly as the one online.
- 02:20 That said, I'll go ahead and maximize the screen, ask you to open up your Outlook
- 02:24 365 desktop app, and let's go ahead and get started with our video series.
