Quick reference
The timeline is a special view that appears directly under the tabs. The timeline provides a graphical visualization of your project. The timeline is excellent for reviewing the project’s implementation plan from within PowerPoint or in emails.
Steps
To access the timeline, follow these steps:
- Click the View tab, and then select the Timeline checkbox.
- Right-click a task and select the Add to timeline menu item.
- Milestones display outside the boundaries of the timeline.
- Tasks appear inside the boundaries of the timeline, but you can click-and-drag the task outside the boundaries, creating what Microsoft Project calls a callout.
- 00:04 New to project 2016-2019 and Project Online is
- 00:08 the ability to add multiple timelines to a single timeline view.
- 00:12 Let's see what that looks like.
- 00:14 First, we'll go ahead and stretch the screen out so
- 00:18 we can see more of the timeline view.
- 00:20 We'll go to the Format tab under the timeline, tools area.
- 00:25 And we'll just click this timeline bar icon.
- 00:29 And now you can see I have another timeline.
- 00:32 By default, it's not automatically selected.
- 00:35 So if I want to add tasks I can do it the same way as I normally would.
- 00:40 But I do recommend when you starting to use multiple timelines,
- 00:44 the best way to do that is to first select the one that you're working with.
- 00:48 Then click the existing tasks icon and
- 00:52 select the item you want to add and then it's added.
- 00:57 If you want to move it to the other timeline, just click and
- 01:01 hold on to it and drag it up to the other timeline.
- 01:05 You can do everything you normally expect with the timeline view,
- 01:08 including doing call outs.
- 01:10 I do not recommend you just creating as many timelines as you can in one timeline
- 01:14 view, they'll get pretty confusing.
- 01:17 Think about who the audience is for this timeline view and
- 01:21 group them together as needed.
- 01:23 In this case, maybe I'm creating a view just for the homeowner.
- 01:28 And these are the only things I want the homeowner to see.
- 01:31 That would be perfect for this.
- 01:33 I might have another timeline view that I use to work with the general contractor.
- 01:38 So think about how you might, let's say if you were to take this information and
- 01:43 share it for a presentation and put it into a PowerPoint slide.
- 01:46 Think about who you'd be presenting that to.
- 01:50 If it weren't just in Microsoft Project.
- 01:52 Of course, you can also remove a timeline bar.
- 01:55 So just go ahead and right click it and choose remove timeline bar.
- 02:00 There you go, it's gone.
