Quick reference
Pictures - Size, Layers, Group
Size pictures precisely to your own measurements; Layer the pictures and control the overlap; and Group pictures so they move as one object.
When to use
Pictures are incredibly versatile and you will use the size, layer, and group features almost every time a picture is on your publication.
Instructions:
- Begin by opening a Blank publication.
- Click the Insert Ribbon,
and click Pictures,
- Choose any 3 pictures in your files, or use the accompanying pictures with this video lesson.
- Notice the pictures drop alongside the publication into the “Scratch Area”.
Ultimately, Picture Placement is your control. If no Picture Placeholder is used, Publisher inserts to the Scratch Area. - Move the pictures individually or as one unit onto the publication page. Arrange them horizontally or diagonally to each other.
- Resize the pictures individually or as one unit to be 2” in height.
(Use CTRL Click to select all 3), click the Picture Tools Ribbon, type “2” into the height box.
- Layer the pictures to overlap one another. Then use the Bring Forward, Send Backward buttons to practice the layering.
- Group the pictures to protect the placement as they are moved in the publication.
Computer Tips:
- “Ctrl + Scroll” to zoom in is faster than pointing to the bottom right zoom controls. Zoom in or out quickly by holding down CTRL and scroll with your mouse wheel.
- To un-do anything, simply press “Ctrl + Z”, or click the un-do button on the Quick Access bar:
- “Ctrl Click” each picture to select multiple pics to format simultaneously

- 00:04 In this lesson, we're gonna work with pictures and resizing pictures and
- 00:08 we're just gonna use a blank document.
- 00:10 So when you first open up publisher, just go ahead and double-click Blank.
- 00:14 Click, click and it will open right up.
- 00:16 Now, I' have already collapsed my ribbons.
- 00:18 Yours can be open.
- 00:19 If you want them open, just double-click a ribbon tab.
- 00:22 But I like mine collapsed, cuz it gives me more screen to work with and
- 00:26 then I'm gonna go ahead and Insert > Pictures and
- 00:30 the picture files accompany this lesson video.
- 00:34 So, I'm gonna go ahead and just choose three of these.
- 00:36 The Office Lobby, the Office View and the Office Breakroom and click Insert.
- 00:40 Now notice when I click Insert, they didn't land on the publication.
- 00:44 They landed over here in the scratch area as thumbnails.
- 00:49 Now, I simply just have to click and drag.
- 00:52 Now because they were all still selected, I pulled them together as one unit.
- 00:57 Now if I click off of it and now just select one of them and
- 01:00 have handles on one of them, now I can reposition that entirely on its own and
- 01:05 I can click the other one.
- 01:07 Now in order to see this properly, I'm gonna Ctrl and
- 01:11 scroll on my mouse to zoom in on this.
- 01:14 So, you can see it a little better on the screen.
- 01:17 I want each one of these pictures to be two inches tall.
- 01:20 I don't care how wide they are, but I want them to be two inches tall.
- 01:24 I've selected a picture, it has handles on it.
- 01:27 My Picture Tools and Format ribbon are right up here, and
- 01:30 now my resize is right over here.
- 01:32 So I can click on that, type 2 and I do have to click into the next box and
- 01:37 you'll see that picture enlarge.
- 01:40 But what if i wanted to do all of them at the same time?
- 01:44 I'm now going to go ahead and press Ctrl+Z on my keyboard to undo that.
- 01:49 And now, I'm going to hold down my Ctrl key and click on the other two pictures.
- 01:55 So now I'm working with all of them at the same time instead of doing each one
- 01:59 individually, which is a lot of repetitive work.
- 02:02 So, I've click on Picture Tools format.
- 02:04 Notice that this box is blank.
- 02:06 It's because each one is a different height and it's confused,
- 02:09 it doesn't know what I want.
- 02:11 So, I'm gonna click in there and I'm gonna tell it 2 inches for each of them.
- 02:15 Click off of it and there we go.
- 02:17 We have a 2 inch picture for each of these.
- 02:20 Well, they're two inches high.
- 02:22 Again, I don't care how wide they are.
- 02:24 When I zoom down, you can see that this one was too big and
- 02:27 it fell off the side of the publication.
- 02:29 So let's go ahead now and work with the bring to front, and bring to back.
- 02:36 So I am going to kinda stagger these in this fashion, stagger them like this.
- 02:42 And as you can see,
- 02:43 it kind of decides which picture is going to be in the background.
- 02:48 It decides on its own, but you have the control to decide on your own.
- 02:53 So, what if I want this particular picture to overlap and sit on top of this one?
- 02:57 So I've selected that picture, you can see the handles.
- 03:01 I'll go to my Picture Tools ribbon, click on Format.
- 03:04 And now, I have a Bring Forward, Send Backward.
- 03:06 So I'm just going to click Bring Forward and as you can see,
- 03:10 it's now sitting on top of the other one.
- 03:12 So this one overlaps the brown one, hich overlaps the next one.
- 03:15 Well, let's go ahead and reverse that.
- 03:17 I'm going to click on the bottom one, go to my Format and
- 03:20 I'm going to bring that one forward.
- 03:24 And now I'm gonna click on this one, click on my Format and send that one backwards.
- 03:29 So as you can see, it's up to you.
- 03:31 You have total control of the layout here.
- 03:34 If you hit the drop-down arrow instead of just sending backward,
- 03:38 which will send it back one layer, you could send all the way to the back,
- 03:41 which will send it to the bottom of the pile.
- 03:44 Just image paper photos stacked up on a desk,
- 03:47 do you shuffle them all the way to the bottom or just back one at a time?
- 03:53 Same with the Bring Forward right here.
- 03:55 There are a couple other buttons.
- 03:57 This one is Group and this one is Ungroup.
- 04:00 So if I click all of these and click on Format > Group,
- 04:05 now I group them all as one picture.
- 04:08 Notice the handles are around the entire group instead of three individual
- 04:12 pictures.
- 04:13 The beauty of this is now they will move as a Group, they won't ever separate.
- 04:17 It's a great trick that group thing.
- 04:19 So now, I'm gonna click on Format.
- 04:21 And now I'm gonna choose Ungroup and now they all have individual handles again,
- 04:26 and I could just choose one, and just move one of them on its own.
- 04:30 So, that's today's lesson on resizing.
- 04:33 Thank you.
