Post and Receive Messages
Start conversations and post and receive messages in a team channel.
When to use
We start conversations with team members whenever we have something to discuss.
Instructions
Teams is a communications application. One of the most used features is conversations - a way of posting and receiving messages from colleagues.
Start a Conversation
- Select a channel.
Notice at the top of each channel we have 3 tabs: Posts, Files, and Wiki. All conversations take place in the Posts tab.
- Click the New conversation button.
- Type a message into the conversation field.
- Press Enter to send the message or click the paper plane icon.
We can format the message, add emojis, gifs, and stickers and attach files using the icons underneath the message.
All channel members can see messages we post in this way and can reply using the Reply button underneath. Conversations flow using a threaded format.
When someone replies to a post, we receive a notification in our Activity Feed.
Login to download- 00:03 Teams at its core is a communications application.
- 00:08 So it makes sense that one of the most used
- 00:12 functionalities is posting and receiving messages.
- 00:17 And most of us have been doing this for years.
- 00:19 From all the way back in the days of AOL, if you're as old as me then you'll
- 00:24 remember that, all the way through to things like Skype and Slack.
- 00:29 And messaging works in exactly the same way as all of these other applications, so
- 00:34 I don't think you're going to find this too challenging.
- 00:37 Now if we select a channel, and, again,
- 00:40 we're going to use Northwind Traders as an example, let's click on the Sales channel.
- 00:47 Now notice that within each channel we have three different tabs at the top,
- 00:52 Posts, Files, and Wiki.
- 00:54 And by default you're going to land on the Posts tab.
- 00:58 And if you cast your eyes down to the bottom,
- 01:01 notice that we have a New conversation button.
- 01:05 So this is where you come to chat with your other channel members.
- 01:10 And everything you post and type in here can be seen by all of the channel members,
- 01:15 so just bear that in mind when you're sending messages.
- 01:20 If you want to chat privately with a member of your team or somebody else,
- 01:24 we do that in a completely different area.
- 01:26 This is really for group conversations within a channel.
- 01:30 So I'm going to click the New conversation button.
- 01:34 And you'll notice that I now get a little area at the bottom where I can type in
- 01:38 whatever it is that I want to say.
- 01:40 And underneath the area where we type,
- 01:43 we have some icons which allow us to do things like attach files and
- 01:47 add some personality to our messages with gifs, emojis, stickers, things like that.
- 01:54 Now we're not going to spend too long here,
- 01:56 because I think most people understand at this stage how messaging systems work,
- 02:01 but let's add a quick message.
- 02:03 Hi everyone, welcome to the new channel.
- 02:06 If I want to send this message through, I can either hit Return or
- 02:10 click on that little paper plane icon to the right-hand side.
- 02:14 Now I'm just going to hit Return, and
- 02:16 it sends that message through to the channel, and all team members can see it.
- 02:22 Now all of these icons that you can see underneath my message,
- 02:25 we're going to go through those in various different lessons throughout this course.
- 02:30 So for now just understand how you can post messages and
- 02:33 interact with other channel members.
- 02:36 When you receive a reply to a message,
- 02:38 like I received a reply from Ben just here, you're going to see that underneath.
- 02:43 Teams utilizes threaded conversations.
- 02:46 And you're also going to get a notification in your activity log.
- 02:50 Now my activity log did show a number one here when that message came in, but
- 02:55 because I was clicking around in between, it's disappeared.
- 02:59 But if we jump into here you can see that I can see this
- 03:03 conversation in my feed as well.
- 03:06 If I want to reply to Ben, I can simply click the Reply button
- 03:11 underneath his message, and then hit Enter to send that through.
- 03:16 So messaging back and forth, very straightforward,
- 03:19 we're not reinventing the wheel here.
- 03:22 If you've used one messaging application, you've pretty much used them all.
- 03:26 Now obviously there are a lot of options and
- 03:28 icons underneath that we haven't discussed yet, but
- 03:32 we are going to talk about those as we progress through this section.
