Quick reference
Target Messages using @mentions
Target message towards specific people, channels, and teams using @mentions.
When to use
Use an @mention whenever you want to specifically direct a message towards certain people. @mentioned people will receive a notification in their Activity Feed.
Instructions
An @mention is like tapping someone on the shoulder to get their attention. Target a message towards a specific person or group of people using @mentions. This is very similar to sending @replies on Twitter.
In Teams, we can @mention people, teams, or channels.
Mention Someone
- Click the New conversation button.
- Type a message.
- To mention someone, add the @ symbol before their name.
Mention a Channel
We can mention an entire channel in our conversations to ensure our message is directed to all channel members.
- Click the New conversation button.
- Type a message.
- To mention a channel, add the @ symbol before the channel name.
Mention a Team
- Click the New conversation button.
- Type a message.
- To mention a team, add the @ symbol before the team name.
Hints & tips
- @mentions are highlighted in the conversation with a red @ symbol next to the message.
- Team owners can control who can @mention in teams settings.
- 00:04 I saw someone post recently that an @ mention is very similar to tapping
- 00:09 someone on the shoulder to get their attention.
- 00:12 And I thought that illustrated @ mentions really well.
- 00:16 If you want to target a message specifically towards a certain user to
- 00:21 maybe get their feedback,
- 00:23 then you can simply enter an @ symbol before their name.
- 00:27 And if you're used to using applications like Twitter or even Instagram,
- 00:32 then you're probably familiar with the good old @ mentioned.
- 00:37 In teams, you can @ mention one or more people, and
- 00:41 you can even @ mentioned channels and entire teams.
- 00:44 Teams maybe I want to specifically ask Ben about the weekly sales report, and this
- 00:49 isn't information that anybody else who's a member of this channel can provide me.
- 00:55 So I want to make sure that Ben gets the message.
- 00:58 All I need to do here is type in an @ symbol.
- 01:01 Notice it's going to pop up with suggestions, so
- 01:04 you'll normally find in here are the members of the channel.
- 01:08 And you can either type in their name or select them from this list.
- 01:12 So I need to ask Ben if he's got the weekly sales report handy,
- 01:16 hit Enter to send that through.
- 01:19 Now in Ben's teams,
- 01:20 he's going to receive a notification that somebody has @ mentioned him.
- 01:25 And that will appear in the activity log to make it really easy for him to find.
- 01:31 And it might be that he @ mentions me back, and there we go,
- 01:36 Ben has sent me an @ mention.
- 01:39 Now because I was already clicked in this channel,
- 01:43 I haven't received a little notification in my activity feed.
- 01:47 But if I click on Activity,
- 01:49 you'll see right at the top here it says Ben mentioned you in this message.
- 01:55 And I can see the message in my feed just here.
- 01:58 So it means that I don't have to hunt through my different teams and
- 02:02 channels in order to find where this message actually is.
- 02:05 So @ mentions are a great way of targeting your responses towards one or more people.
- 02:12 If I wanted to @ mention two people, I could do that as well.
- 02:18 So I'm going to reply to Ben, I'm going to say @ Ben Lee,
- 02:23 great might want to send to.
- 02:27 And then I'm going to @ mention somebody else.
- 02:29 So this time we're also going to mention Jen Green.
- 02:34 And when I send that back through, both Ben and Jen are going to receive
- 02:39 notifications in their activity feed that I've mentioned them.
- 02:43 Now something else I could do here is I could @ mention an entire channel.
- 02:49 So I'm currently working in the sales channel but
- 02:52 maybe I want to @ mention everybody in the fun stuff channel.
- 02:57 And this works how you would probably expect.
- 03:00 We can type in an @ symbol and
- 03:02 we can start to type what it is that we're looking for.
- 03:05 Now, notice I've just had to type F there and it's brought up fun stuff.
- 03:10 So if I select this channel, I can then type my message and
- 03:13 it's going to post to everybody in that channel.
- 03:17 So there's my message drinks on Friday, let's hit Enter.
- 03:23 So you can basically send messages from one channel out to all of the members
- 03:28 of another channel.
- 03:30 And you can even use this method to @ mention entire teams as well.
