About this lesson
In this lesson, we will start to build an 'Our Services' slide. In part 2 of this lesson, we will build the background using shapes, images and crop and fill, and then apply animation to this slide.

Slide 5: Our Services - Animated Bullets and Numbered Lists - Part 1
It is common to see PowerPoint slides that contain lists. These lists might be the products and services offered, an agenda, a list of employees etc. Most people format lists using bullet points. This is fine, but not very interesting. Think about how you can display lists in a more engaging way and add pizazz with animation.
In Part 1 of this lesson, we will start to design a slide that displays a list in a different way.
When to use
Think about using shapes, text and animation as an alternative to bullet points when displaying a list of information.
Instructions
Run the Slide Show
It's a good idea to preview or run our presentation as we build it to check what the presentation will look like to the audience.
- From the Slide Show tab, in the Start Slide Show group, select From beginning or From Current Slide.
- Or, Press the F5 key to run the slide show from the beginning.
Add and Format Shapes
We will start by adding the shapes and lines we need to represent our list in a different way.
- Press CTRL+D to duplicate the title slide.
- Delete out the logo, company name and tagline.
- From the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click Shapes.
- Select the Oval shape.
- Hold down SHIFT and draw a circle on the slide.
- Press CTRL+D three times to duplicate the shape.
- Arrange the shapes as desired on the slide.
- Press CTRL+A to select all shapes.
- From the Shape Format tab, in the Shape Styles group, select Shape Fill.
- Select a dark purple color from the palette.
- From the Shape Format tab, in the Shape Styles group, select Shape Outline.
- Select White, Background 1 from the palette.
Add and Format Lines
- From the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click Shapes.
- Select Line.
- Hold down SHIFT and draw a line from the bottom center of the first shape down to the bottom of the slide.
- Press CTRL+D three times to duplicate the line.
- Position each line so the top of the line meets the shape and the bottom meets the bottom of the slide.
- Select all the lines.
- From the Shape Format tab, in the Shape Styles group, click Shape Outline.
- Select Weight.
- Change the weight of the lines to 1 1/2 pts.
- From the Shape Format tab, in the Shape Styles group, click Shape Outline.
- Select Dashes.
- Change the style to Rounded dot.
Add and Align Icons
Icons add visual interest to our list. Choose your icons carefully to represent the list item and ensure icons are aligned with the shapes.
- From the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click Icons.
- Browse of search for icons you would like to use.
- Click Insert.
- Reposition so that each circle contains an icon.
- Select the icon and the shape.
- From the Graphics Format tab, in the Arrange group, click Align.
- Select Align Center and Align Middle.
- Repeat steps 5-7 to align the other icons in the shapes.
Hints & tips
- By default, the F5 shortcut key runs the slide show from the beginning.
- When connecting shapes and lines, connection points will appear on the shape to ensure the line is connected in the center.
- 00:04 So we're really starting to build out this PowerPoint presentation now.
- 00:08 I think you'll agree it's looking pretty good.
- 00:10 It looks consistent and each slide looks like it belongs in this presentation.
- 00:15 Now in this lesson we're going to add in animation.
- 00:19 And animation isn't something we've really discussed as yet.
- 00:23 And all animation is is a way of making things move on your slide.
- 00:29 So let me show you an example.
- 00:31 Now another really important thing I haven't shown you how to do yet
- 00:34 is how to run your slideshow.
- 00:36 So if you want to view what your presentation is going to look
- 00:39 like you can run the slideshow by clicking on the slideshow tab at the top and
- 00:43 then in this first group you can choose to run the presentation from the beginning or
- 00:47 from the slide that you're currently clicked on.
- 00:51 Alternatively, there is a keyboard shortcut for this and that is the F5 key.
- 00:55 Now it's worth noting that F5 is always going to run your presentation by
- 00:59 default from the beginning.
- 01:01 But we haven't been through and checked our presentation yet, so
- 01:04 we might as well do that now.
- 01:07 So we have our title slide, we have our first divider, the About Us slide.
- 01:12 Meet the Team, which we're going to come back to a bit later on,
- 01:15 our second divider.
- 01:16 And now we have the Our Services slide, and
- 01:20 take a look what happens when I press the arrow key.
- 01:24 I have some animation So
- 01:29 instantly this makes this slide look a little bit more interesting.
- 01:33 So this is my challenge for you.
- 01:35 The next time you're asked to put together a list on a PowerPoint slide,
- 01:39 think about different ways that you can design it outside of just a regular list.
- 01:43 Now with all that said, let me show you how I created this slide.
- 01:47 So yet again, I'm going to reuse that slide background.
- 01:51 So I'm going to duplicate the title slide and
- 01:53 just delete out everything from here that I don't need.
- 01:57 My next task is to add four circles.
- 02:00 So we should be used to doing this by now, we're going into our shapes,
- 02:05 I'm going to add one and then I'm going to duplicate it three times.
- 02:11 And I'm just going to place these a bit haphazardly on the page.
- 02:14 So let's have one just there, let's move these across a bit and
- 02:18 that looks pretty good.
- 02:20 Now the first thing I'm going to do here is change that shape fill, so
- 02:24 up to shape format, and let's make these a purple color to keep in with our theme.
- 02:29 I'm going to give the shapes an outline, let's just give them a white outline.
- 02:34 The next thing I'm going to do is add some dotted lines running from each of these
- 02:38 shapes down to the bottom of the slide.
- 02:41 So again for this, we're just inserting a line.
- 02:45 And notice when I drag over this first shape,
- 02:48 I get these connection points around the outside.
- 02:52 And this is going to help me draw my line and make sure it's in the center.
- 02:56 And remember, if we want to get a perfectly straight line,
- 02:59 hold down Shift as we drag.
- 03:02 And I'm going to do the same for all of these shapes.
- 03:05 Now that I have all of those lines,
- 03:07 I'm going to select them all by holding down Shift and clicking to select.
- 03:13 And now I'm going to format them.
- 03:15 So up to shape outline, I'm going to change the weight to, let's do one and
- 03:19 a half points.
- 03:21 And I'm also going to change these from solid lines to dotted lines.
- 03:27 The next thing I need to do here is just add in some icons.
- 03:30 And all of the icons that I used in the completed example were again from
- 03:35 the PowerPoint icon library.
- 03:37 So I'm to insert into icons, and then you can just search for
- 03:42 the icons that you want to use.
- 03:44 And when you're practicing, I don't really mind which icons you use.
- 03:48 They don't have to be exactly the same as mine.
- 03:51 Just select four and add them into the shape.
- 03:54 So for quickness, I've cut and paste these from the other presentation.
- 03:57 And I'm just going to move them into the shapes, so remember to align them
- 04:03 dead in the center, you want to make sure you select both the circle and
- 04:08 the icon and use your alignment tools to align to center.
- 04:13 And then also align to middle.
- 04:16 That's the end of part one.
- 04:18 Join me in the next lesson for part two.
