Quick reference
Draw with Touch
This lesson is targeted at people who use a touch device. Maybe you have a touch screen laptop or a tablet device with a stylus. In PowerPoint, we can activate touch mode and make annotations to our slide. If you don't use a touch device, you can skip this lesson.
When to use
Use Touch Mode if you use a touch screen device and need to make annotations.
Instructions
Turn on Touch Mode
- From the Quick Access Toolbar, click the drop-down arrow and select Touch/Mouse Mode.
- Switch to Touch Mode.
Draw with Touch
- From the Draw tab, in the Drawing Tools group, select Draw with Touch.
- Select a Pen.
- Change the thickness to 2mm.
- Choose the Plum color.
- Make annotations on the slide.
- Select another pen and practice annotating.
Erase Annotations
- Select the Eraser tool.
- Choose Segment Eraser.
- Swipe over the line to erase.
- Click on the Select Objects arrow to deselect the Pen tool.
Use the Ruler to Draw Straight Lines
The Ruler is a new addition to PowerPoint. It helps you draw straight lines.
- From the Stencils group, select Ruler.
- Use your fingers to rotate and position the ruler.
- Select Draw with Touch.
- Select a Pen.
- Use the ruler to draw a straight line.
Ink Replay
Ink Replay lets us write some text and then replay the action.
- From the Replay group, select Ink Replay.
- Make an annotation on the slide.
- Click Ink Replay to replay the action.
Hints & tips
- If you don't have a stylus you can use your mouse or your finger to make annotations.
- 00:04 In this section we're going to shift our focus to working with touch.
- 00:09 And I will say that the lessons in this particular section mainly apply to those
- 00:13 people who use some kind of touch device.
- 00:16 So that might be a tablet, a laptop that has a touchscreen or
- 00:20 another touch enabled device.
- 00:23 Now if you don't have a touch device,
- 00:25 then you might choose to skip this section which is absolutely fine.
- 00:29 Alternatively, you can run through this section as well because you can
- 00:33 apply annotations and use drawing tools with your mouse but obviously that's
- 00:38 not quite as accurate and probably isn't something that you're going to do.
- 00:43 So I'll leave that decision up to you.
- 00:45 But for those of you that do have a touch device,
- 00:48 let's have a look at some of the options that we have available in PowerPoint to
- 00:52 add annotations to our slides.
- 00:54 Now if you are using a touch device,
- 00:56 the first thing I would recommend is that you turn on touch mode.
- 01:00 And a simple way to do this is to add touch/mouse mode to your
- 01:04 Quick Access Toolbar.
- 01:07 So let's jump up to our little drop down arrow on the end because touch mouse mode
- 01:11 is actually one of the options we can turn on from this menu.
- 01:16 So let's click it.
- 01:16 And you can see we now have this little icon.
- 01:19 Currently, I'm in mouse mode, but if you want to switch to touch mode, you'll
- 01:24 notice that you get more space on the ribbon in between your different commands.
- 01:29 And that's really to allow for a finger as opposed to a very small mouse cursor.
- 01:35 Now we're going to be exclusively using the draw tab in this lesson and
- 01:39 the next one.
- 01:40 And what you'll notice in this first group,
- 01:43 the drawing tools group is that we have a number of different pens and
- 01:46 pencils that we can use to make annotations on the screen.
- 01:50 Now I'm using a laptop that is also a touchscreen device.
- 01:54 So I'm going to be using my stylus in order to make annotations.
- 01:58 So the first thing I'm going to do is in the touch group,
- 02:01 I'm going to switch to draw with touch.
- 02:04 And basically what I can now do is choose a pen or a pencil to use.
- 02:09 Now with all of these different drawing tools,
- 02:12 you'll see that there's a little arrow.
- 02:14 If I click the drop down, I can then choose the thickness of my line and
- 02:19 also the colour.
- 02:21 So for this one the default is red.
- 02:23 I might want to make that a little bit thicker and
- 02:25 change it to something that matches my colour scheme a little bit more.
- 02:28 So let's switch to this plum colour.
- 02:31 So now I have my pen set up,
- 02:32 I can basically start to make annotations on my slide.
- 02:45 Now that is a very messy example because I'm kind of trying to write vertically.
- 02:50 If you're using something like a laptop,
- 02:52 then your handwriting is probably going to be a lot neater than mine is just here.
- 02:56 But hopefully you get the idea.
- 02:59 If I want to switch to a different style pen,
- 03:01 I simply go back to my drawing tools and let's go for this galaxy pen just here.
- 03:06 I'm going to make this reasonably thick and let's leave it on this galaxy color.
- 03:12 And once again, I can make some annotations on my page.
- 03:15 I also have a highlighter in here which is going to help me highlight certain pieces
- 03:20 of text on the page.
- 03:22 And again, I'm sure you can probably do this a lot neater than I'm doing it here.
- 03:26 But hopefully you get the idea.
- 03:28 Just select your pen from the choices, select the thickness and
- 03:32 then start annotating on your slides.
- 03:35 Now if at any point you want to erase, you also have an eraser tool, just here.
- 03:40 So if we click this, and again we have a little drop down just here,
- 03:44 I can choose the stroke eraser, point eraser or segment eraser.
- 03:49 So let's go for segment eraser.
- 03:52 I can swipe over the line and it's going to erase it.
- 03:55 I can do the same for this text up here so
- 03:58 I can just swipe through it to a raise that out.
- 04:01 So reasonably straightforward to do.
- 04:04 Now, if at any point you want to deactivate touch mode,
- 04:07 just click on the arrow which is the first icon on the ribbon, and
- 04:10 that's just going to take you back to your regular mouse cursor.
- 04:14 Now something else that's quite cool and
- 04:16 it's actually one of the newer features that's been added to
- 04:19 PowerPoint is the ruler that you have in the middle in the stencils group.
- 04:23 Now, if I turn this on, it's going to put this big old ruler on my slide.
- 04:29 And what I can do is I can use my fingers on my touch device to turn this ruler and
- 04:34 position it wherever I want.
- 04:36 And this is particularly good if you're trying to line up specific objects on your
- 04:40 slide, or maybe even if you want to draw a completely straight line.
- 04:44 So with my rule in place like that, I'm going to turn on draw with touch.
- 04:49 I'm going to select the black pen and I'm going to keep it at that thickness.
- 04:54 Now I'm using my stylus if I start to draw a line,
- 04:57 it's going to be perfectly straight.
- 05:00 And follow along that ruler.
- 05:02 So that's quite a nice little addition.
- 05:05 The final thing I want to show you in this particular lesson is
- 05:08 the ink replay option.
- 05:10 So again, if I try and write some text on this slide,
- 05:15 I can then click on Ink Replay and
- 05:17 it's basically going to rewrite that piece of text for me.
- 05:23 So that can be quite nice if you're doing a presentation like this one and
- 05:26 you want to show some handwriting, you can write it with your stylus and
- 05:30 then click on Ink Replay.
- 05:32 That's pretty much all there is to touch, it is fairly straightforward.
- 05:36 Now we do have a few other selections on this ribbon that we haven't looked at yet
- 05:41 such as ink to math, ink to shape and also the lasso tool.
- 05:45 And that's exactly what we're going to be looking at in the next lesson.
- 05:48 So I'm going to head over there now and I look forward to you joining me
