- 00:05 Hello everyone, my name is Francesco and
- 00:07 welcome back to this GoSkills.com essential productivity course.
- 00:11 Now in this feature,
- 00:12 we're going to be talking specifically about an introduction to Evernote.
- 00:17 One of the resources that I recommend all the time is Evernote because of
- 00:22 its note taking functionality and
- 00:24 ability to clip things across the web, and also your daily routine.
- 00:29 So we're gonna talk a little bit of an introduction, which will
- 00:33 give us a good premise for going into detail on the tool, so let's get started.
- 00:37 For those who don't know, Evernote was started in 2007 by founders who were
- 00:42 interested in basically capturing information,
- 00:45 having an external brain across your day.
- 00:47 Since then, it's grown worldwide and now has over 100 million users.
- 00:53 And as I was mentioning, it aims to be your second brain.
- 00:56 So being this storage point for your ideas, thoughts, and
- 01:00 creations as you go across all of your life.
- 01:04 Many people use Evernote for a lot of different things, I know there are some
- 01:07 amazing use cases and case studies for lots of different situations.
- 01:11 Whether you're an entrepreneur or an accountant.
- 01:13 The core things that many people use Evernote for are Managing ideas,
- 01:17 Clipping things for later, Planning activities and events.
- 01:21 Project management, and Storing important information.
- 01:25 Of course you can use Evernote outside of this, but
- 01:28 getting an idea of who uses Evernote is important.
- 01:31 So as I was mentioning, use cases, there's such a wide range of use for Evernote.
- 01:35 If you just go on to their blog, for example, which is at blog.evernote.com,
- 01:40 you'll see some of the ranges of uses of Evernote.
- 01:43 There could be a farmer using it, or, as I'm saying, a shopkeeper, etc.,
- 01:48 to keep himself organized.
- 01:49 In terms of examples, here's some common examples.
- 01:52 Entrepreneurs are heavily users of Evernote, naturally, because it helps
- 01:57 them keep organized as they go through a very busy period of their life.
- 02:02 Freelancers, again very useful,
- 02:04 freelancers because they can organize all of their information, billing etc.
- 02:09 Designers, professionals in law are very common users of Evernote,
- 02:13 especially the business experience they have.
- 02:16 Students very good for revising and clipping information for lectures and
- 02:20 information like that to help them get the best grades possible.
- 02:23 And also teachers for sharing it with their students and
- 02:27 being able to communicate through Evernote.
- 02:29 Why do people use Evernote?
- 02:31 There are many features inside of Evernote.
- 02:33 The thing that mainly draws a lot of people to Evernote is the range of
- 02:36 features.
- 02:37 A lot of people like the document, image and file attachments.
- 02:41 That's obviously an important part of any resource but
- 02:44 especially when it comes to clipping ideas and things like that.
- 02:48 You want to add as much visual or contextual information as possible.
- 02:51 And of course documents, image and files are important.
- 02:55 Note- taking formatting is also valuable when it comes to people who like to use
- 02:59 Evernote.
- 03:00 They like to use the bolds, they like to use large headings.
- 03:03 They like to use colors, they like to format the text like a word processing.
- 03:07 They like to have a bit of creativity with that, that's another benefit.
- 03:11 Organizational abilities,
- 03:13 Evernote obviously has a clear structure to their organizational stuff.
- 03:16 Notebooks, which I'll explain in the next feature and go into a lot more detail on,
- 03:21 is the way that people use Evernote to organize.
- 03:24 And search functionality,
- 03:25 there's such rich search functionalities inside of Evernote.
- 03:29 And something that a lot of people enjoy,
- 03:31 especially because it can scan handwriting, emails, and PDFs.
- 03:34 Evernote is available on a lot of devices, iOS, Android, Mac, PC,
- 03:39 Blackberry and other devices too, so it's quite wide range.
- 03:43 And many people who do use it as well as word processing abilities, too.
- 03:46 So it's not just, you know, notetaking, people can use as word processing.
- 03:51 There are competitions that people enter, like writing competitions, and
- 03:55 they exclusively use Evernote for that.
- 03:57 So it's quite interesting to see that progression.
- 04:00 On this Evernote section, we're gonna try to understand Evernote,
- 04:03 the basic functionality of it.
- 04:05 How you can be implementing it in your daily routine, and
- 04:08 some worked examples as well.
- 04:10 We're gonna be covering our features.
- 04:12 So Organizing your notebooks, Creating effective notes.
- 04:16 Using the Web Clipper, which is an important part of Evernote and
- 04:20 Evernote Advanced Tips as well.
- 04:22 We're also gonna talk here about the Storage set-up and
- 04:25 give you a full worked example.
- 04:27 We want to give you as much content as possible here.
- 04:29 So exercises, there will be an Evernote Cheat Sheet: How to install it and
- 04:33 get started.
- 04:34 The second exercise will be Evernote Use Cases, how people are using Evernote and
- 04:38 why so many people have adopted it.
- 04:41 Just to give you some context, if you need to explain the usage to other people and
- 04:45 maybe convey that message to them.
- 04:48 Now there are obviously some alternatives, OneNote is a good example,
- 04:51 Microsoft's alternative to Evernote, and it's available pretty much for
- 04:55 everyone out there.
- 04:56 It's free and it's really used by teachers, students and
- 04:59 professionals, but it's a really strong alternative if you're looking for one.
- 05:04 The most recent one is Bear Notes, that's a strong alternative too for iOS and
- 05:09 Mac users.
- 05:10 Simple design with very limited functionality, however,
- 05:13 it's easy to use and get started with.
- 05:16 Now Evernote is really marked as one of the best ones in the field.
- 05:19 So you're in a good situation by understanding how to use Evernote and
- 05:24 putting it in context.
- 05:25 Thanks, guys, and I'll see you next feature.
